MEET-NSBE High School Outreach Weekend – spring 2015
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s) and Student,
During the weekend of Thursday, April 9th to Sunday, April 12th, the Minority
Engineering Educational Task - the Rutgers University chapter of the National Society of Black
Engineers (MEET-RUNSBE) - will be hosting its High School Outreach Weekend. This
program is part of our Pre-College Initiative Program (PCI), which presents minority students
with a positive outlook towards higher education in the technological field. The Pre-Collegiate
Initiative is one of NSBE’s strongest programs, and it is devoted to identifying and encouraging
minority students to pursue engineering and technical fields as a career path. NSBE is a nonprofit organization ran by students and has been in existence for over thirty years with
representation from more than 260 universities throughout the nation. NSBE strives to stimulate
student interest in technical fields such as science, mathematics, and engineering in response to
the lack of minorities pursuing degrees in these particular fields. For this reason, MEET has
taken a special interest in our High School Outreach Weekend. Each year, high school students
all over New Jersey and in surrounding areas, are invited to spend a weekend at Rutgers School
of Engineering to receive hands-on overview of the benefits of a career in engineering, among
other future opportunities. During the outreach weekend, the students receive guidance from
college students who are enrolled in various engineering disciplines, as well as information about
the application / admission process and financial aid information. In addition, the students will
have a chance to work with each other on several projects, which will help to demonstrate
leadership and networking skills. Students will also partake in technical engineering workshops,
which will help shed light onto various engineering disciplines.
By the end of the program, the students should have a better idea of college life and what
is expected of them in a setting of higher education, as well as what they should expect from
such an institution. It is our sincere desire that all students will get a better understanding of their
future goals, aspirations, strengths, and weaknesses. Finally, the students will be able to learn the
importance of collaborating in a professional environment. This fall’s High School Outreach
Weekend is geared towards (ONLY) high school Juniors and Seniors; whether they are
interested in engineering and technology, or are interested in attending Rutgers University.
Please complete and submit the attached application and a non-refundable application fee of $25
(check, money order, or cash) by the due date, (APPLICATION MUST ARRIVE BY)
Monday, March 16th. For any students who might be unable to pay the program fee, the
possibility of the student being sponsored by their school is encouraged. After all, a price can
never be put on a student’s furthered development or education. Please keep in mind that
incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. If you have any questions, please feel free
