Course Description: Clinical practice in the care of clients with complex health maintenance, promotion and illness management. Management of care at the individual, family and aggregate levels will be emphasized. Coordinates care of clients throughout the health care system. 1 Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will: 1. Implement synthesized knowledge from biopsychosocial sciences to plan and provide care for individuals with complex health problems in area of advanced practice nursing specialization. 2. Demonstrate advanced levels of clinical judgment in care of individuals with complex health needs 3. Integrate evolving evidence-based practice recommendations to care of individuals, groups and aggregates 4. Systematically evaluate the care of individuals with complex needs in a specialty area 5. Apply principles of ethical decision-making in the planning of care for individuals, groups and aggregates with complex health needs 6. Implement role of advanced practice nurse in area of practice 7. Collaborate with health care team members to evaluate and coordinate client outcome and care processes. 8. Analyze health care system impact on care of individuals with complex health problems Teaching/Learning Strategies: Clinical practice with a preceptor, written documentation, review of client cases with faculty and peers, focused reading based on clinical problems encountered in practice, and preparation for DNP project. Clinical Course Protocols: 1. You may NOT start clinical hours until a Preceptor Planning Form (PPF) with your clinical objectives has been approved by your advisor and is in your CON student file. 2. You may NOT start clinical hours until the semester begins. 3. Any clinical hours completed prior to these approvals will NOT count toward completion of the required clinical hours. 4. You must maintain appropriate licensure and certifications to function in an APN role during this clinical rotation. 5. You must meet all facility credentialing requirements (to include HIPAA, computer training). 6. You must meet all UCF requirements for clinical courses to include health forms and background checks (please see the UCF College of Nursing Student Handbook) 7. During this clinical experience you are in a student role and all procedures and patient interactions must be supervised by your preceptor. Additionally, you must work within the scope of your license and the Nurse Practice Act. 2 8. All patient documentation, including prescriptions, are to be co-signed by the preceptor if they are not covered by your protocol agreement with your supervising physician and/or employer. 9. Be sure to provide your preceptor with a copy of your clinical objectives and the preceptor evaluation at the beginning of the semester. It is your responsibility to have the preceptor complete this form by the end of the semester. 10. You may NOT start clinical hours until a contract has been approved between the clinical site and the UCF Legal Council and you have received approval from the Clinical Placement Coordinator, Ms. Hilary Falcon (email: hilary.falcon@ ucf.edu; Phone: 407-823-0697 or Fax: 407-823-5508). All students are expected to prepare for each clinical experience by reading on the types of clients you expect to see. Reading after each clinical experience to review new information and expand learning is encouraged. Students who are dismissed for unsatisfactory progress will be removed from current semester courses and any future semester registration will be cancelled. Dismissed students will not be allowed to take additional courses in the graduate program.
