LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS LBHS Musical: February 22-24, 2013 INFO/PLOT Two Acts, Book Musical, Pop/Rock, Rated PG Original Off-Broadway Version (1982); New Broadway, Revised orchestration (2003) A down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon "Audrey II" grows into an ill-tempered, foulmouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination! *Please note: This show is rated PG, and there are a few profane word choices in the script/score that the Director has edited. CASTING Cast size: Small (2-10) plus ensemble (We will cast no more than 24 students) Cast type: Ethnic roles, star vehicle - male, female (one of each) Dance requirement: minimal Casting notes: 3 male, 4 female, 1 voice for Audrey II, Puppeteer (plus small roles & small ensemble) CHARACTER BREAKDOWN Seymour Krelbourne: Mid-20s and perhaps balding a little; our insecure, naïve, put-upon, florist’s clerk hero. Above all, he’s a sweet and well-meaning little man. He is not a silly, prat-falling nerd, and therefore should not be played as the hero of a Jerry Lewis film. Range: Low A to High G (Tenor) Audrey: The bleach-blonde, Billie-Dawn-like, secret love of Seymour’s life. If you took Judy Holiday, Carol Channing, Marilyn Monroe and Goldie Hawn, removed their education and feelings of self-worth, dressed them in spiked heels and a low-cut black dress, and then shook them all up in a test tube to extract what’s sweetest and most vulnerable – that’d be Audrey. She speaks with a ‘Jersey’ accent. Range: Low A to High D (mezzo-soprano) Chiffon, Crystal & Ronnette: Three black female street urchins who function as participants in the action and a Greek Chorus outside it. They’re young, hip, smart, and the only people in the whole cast who REALLY know what’s going on. In their “Greek Chorus” capacity, they occasionally sing to the audience directly. And when they do, it’s often with a “secret-smile” that says: “we know something you don’t know.” Ranges: Low A to High G (1st soprano, 2nd soprano, alto) Mr. Mushnik: Seymour & Audrey’s Jewish boss, a failure of an East Side florist. His accent, if he has one, is more of middle class New York than Eastern Europe. He seldom smiles but often sweats. Range: Low A to High G-flat (bari-tenor) Orin: A tall, dark, handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and sadistic tendencies. He is NOT, however, a leftover from the movie version of Grease. Think instead of an egotistical pretty-boy – all got up like a greaser but thinking like an insurance salesman and talking like a radio announcer. Range: Low G to High E (bari-tenor) The Plant (Audrey II): An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado. It has a huge, nasty-looking pod which gains a shark-like aspect when open and snapping at food. The creature is played by a series of four increasing large puppets, manipulated by one Puppeteer. The first time we see The Plant, it is less than one foot tall. The last time we see it, it fills the entire stage. Voice of The Plant: Provided by an actor on an offstage microphone. It is important that this actor have clear visual access to the puppets onstage, so that he can provide accurate lip-synch. The sound is a cross between Otis Redding, Barry White, and Wolfman Jack. Think of The Voice as that of a street-smart, funky, conniving villain – Rhythm and Blues’ answer to Richard the Third. Range: Low G to High G (Bass-baritone) Ensemble: Skid Row townspeople, bums, winos, floral shop customers, TV/radio/magazine personalities Ranges: Open (SATB) Roles: o A Voice Not Unlike God’s (non-singing) o Radio Announcer (non- singing) o Mr. Bernstein o Mrs. Luce o Skip Snip o Patrick Martin (non-singing) o Winos/Bums o Customer(s) Songs: 1) Prologue/Little Shop of Horrors (The Voice, Crystal, Ronnette, Chiffon) [Girls choreo] 2) Skid Row (Downtown) (Full Cast: Girls, Mushnik, Audrey, Seymour, Wino #1, Ensemble) 3) Da-Doo (Seymour, Girls) 4) Grow for Me (Seymour) 5) WSKID Radio Jingle (Ensemble) [Pre-recorded] 6) Ya Never Know (Mushnik, Girls, Seymour) 7) Somewhere That’s Green (Audrey, Girls) [Pantomime Audrey’s dream?] 8) Closed for Renovation (Seymour, Audrey, Mushnik) 9) Dentist!
