He founded PHYSEDagogy.com in February 2013; a teacher blog that discusses best practices inside the modern physical education classroom. His educational passions include social justice, teacher-driven instructional leadership, and leveraging technology to enhance teaching and learning; He strives to shatter stereotypes of physical education and health teachers through this lens. During the 2015-16 school year, he is excited to begin his 8th year in the classroom, pursue National Board Certification, and serve as the president-elect of the Oregon Society of Health and Physical Educators. Welcome to team #PhysEd! In this workshop you will engage in a conversation about why it is crucial to "bring learning back" into our classrooms to give our students the best chance to become physically literate individuals. Supercharge your teaching practice by leveraging Google Apps for Education and mobile devices that will transform how you think about how we teach physical education. Learn how to take control of your own professional development by connecting with passionate Physical Educators who are participating in a global professional learning community in the unlikeliest of places: social media. This workshop will combine active learning with classroom learning so bring your tennis shoes, laptop, and a smile and get ready to get your learn on! AD.2 and AD.3: In these all-day workshops elementary school (AD.2) and middle/high school (AD.3) teachers will receive full overview of Step Up To Writing program and will engage in multiple hands-on activities with the current Common Core-aligned version of the program. Both veteran and new teachers will benefit from attendance. Both workshops will be administered by Step Up To Writing staff. AM.1 and PM.1: Annie Duong came to America at age twenty-two with fourteen years of education in Vietnam and three months of survival English from a refugee camp in Indonesia. She has been in the field of education for 24 years working as a bilingual instructional assistant, a community liaison, an ELD, mathematics, and science teacher, a district language development specialist, and currently a coordinator for the Language & Literacy Department, San Joaquin County Office of Education. She is also a part-time faculty member in the Teacher Education department at California State University, Stanislaus, since 1999 and at Teacher Education of San Joaquin, since 2001. In AM.1 Participants will actively engage in a range of research-driven and common core standards-aligned activities that would enable students to write effectively and think critically. Effective strategies embedded within the activities will assist English learners not only in developing academic English proficiency but also in attaining the skills and knowledge needed for the 21st century. These activities are parts of the programs that are developed by the WRITE Institute, Writing Reform Institute for Teaching Excellence, a national Academic Excellence model for sustained professional development in academic writing. In PM.1 participants will examine how formative assessment can effectively be used to support teaching and learning. Information from the current ELA/ELD Framework will be presented along with tools to implement in the classroom. AM.2 and PM.2: Karin Linn-Nieves, Director of Language & Literacy for the San Joaquin County Office of Education, collaborates with districts on the implementation of the CA ELD standards during integrated and designated ELD as described in the newly adopted ELA/ELD Framework. She serves as the Region 6 Lead for Title III technical assistance, and supports schools and districts in EL program design and implementation of research-based instructional approaches. Karin authored “Structures & Strategies,” a professional learning model used across several counties. She has co-authored many state and county-wide English learner authorizations and most recently a chapter in the TESOL publication, The CCSS in ELA/Literacy for English Language Learners: Grades K-5. In AM.2 participants will be introduced to the ‘Teaching & Learning Cycle’ to organize writing instruction within a unit of study. Vignettes from the ELA/ELD Framework will be used as the foundation to analyze a bee unit on informational text writing. There will be planning time so that participants can incorporate these ideas into their own writing units. Workshop PM.2 will focus on the guidance provided in the new ELA/ELD framework on the implementation of a comprehensive approach to English language development (ELD). This approach includes both integrated and designated ELD. Key ideas behind each and how they are powerfully combined to provide effective instruction for English learners 2 throughout the day will be shared. There will be planning time to incorporate ideas and strategies utilized during the session. AM.3 and PM.3: Julie Berlin, NBCT from Conscious Classroom Management will present Let There Be Light! Making visible the invisible elements of effective classroom management. Session Description: How do we create the learning environment we want, without becoming overly rigid or exhausting ourselves in the effort? In this fun and lively session for K-12 educators, learn how to use consistency strategies to end classroom chaos, increase student engagement, and reduce blurting. Learn how to hold ground with kids in a way that minimizes arguing and invites student cooperation. And learn how to positively connect with your toughest students. Leave with your tool-kit overflowing with practical, concrete, and easy-to-implement “stuff you can use!" AM.4 and PM.4: Our own wonderful Melissa Oliver will offer a workshop on Creative and Innovative Uses of Google Slides. Google Slides is not just for presentations! This versatile tool in your Google Drive can be used by students to create infographics, comic strips, animations, newsletters, graphic organizers, math manipulatives, interactive images and much, much more. Let this tool take your student writing and communication to the next level while promoting creativity. This session is designed to provide lots of hands-on exploration and time to create your very own Google Slide masterpiece(s) beyond the presentation. AM.5 and PM.5: Christine Anderson, a curriculum specialist with the Sacramento County Office of Education will conduct two workshops geared to middle school and high school teachers. During the morning session (AM.5), Christine will continue her work with the English Language Arts teachers on effective teaching of Common Core standards. Phil brings a unique perspective as a former science teacher and a science magnet school principal 3 In order for elementary school (AM.8) and middle/high school (PM.8) teachers to build capacity within the district, this day will serve two purposes. First, participants will need to become proficient in unpacking the Science and Engineering Practices and the Crosscutting Concept of NGSS. We will explore three of the Practices and two of the Crosscutting Concepts in depth through a hands-on, open-ended activity. Secondly, participants will break out into grad level teams and, using the core ideas (science content) found at their grade spans, begin to develop an appropriate model lesson to deliver to their peers at the next workshop, scheduled for March 12, 2016. In the following Cadre meetings, some time (limited) will be spent in finalizing these model lessons, with a critical eye as to content as it pertains to what students need to know on a continuum as they move through the grades. Middle school and High school teachers will be able to review the content, as appropriate, to ensure it is correct.
