High school vs. college, myths, academic pointers High School vs. U of M VS. ❖ No one knows you’re PSEO!!! ❖ Resources don’t come to you - you have to find them ➢ Make an effort to know the professor ❖ More freedom/time in between classes ❖ No lunch (& no free/subsidized lunch from the Office) ❖ Classes move faster - in the good & bad ways Classes/Study Tips ❖ Study! (no … really) ➢ Cramming during midterms/finals is possible in some classes, but not for most ➢ Review notes, powerpoints, etc. incrementally ➢ Take good notes and stay awake! In smaller classes, teachers will notice if you’re not. ❖ Midterms/Finals ➢ Hard, but not impossible ➢ A shared trauma that brings us all closer together! ❖ Office hours scary, but they do help. ❖ Make sure you’re fulfilling HS requirements Classes ❖ Missing class ➢ Always bring a doctor’s note ➢ When absent: check the Moodle page ➢ Classes are cool! ❖ Class sizes ➢ Small(ish) - more like HS ■ About 20 students ➢ Large - lecture hall-style ■ Typically w/ smaller discussion groups with TA ➢ At the U, you normally have a combination of both ❖ TAs & Professors ➢ TAs are more approachable, and have more office hours ➢ Professors can be elusive, but love to talk about their subject Sometimes, professors wear awesome costumes! (Prof. Kelvin Wong, Econ 1101) If you need help… ❖ Go to office hours. The longer you wait, the more there’ll be to explain (& the longer the line) ❖ Google/Khan Academy/Wikipedia/Asking your classmates is always a good resource ❖ Go to the department website or Moodle for tutoring room times ➢ Google “[department name] U of M TC tutoring room hours” ➢ A bunch of grad students that help you for free! ❖ Talk to us! Odds are, one of us has taken that class, too.
