Examples of Cubing
Below are some examples of possibilities for cubing. I did not create cubes specific to grade
levels because they are intended to be created specific to students or groups of students.
These options are simply to get you started. Within your classroom, you will likely need
various cubes with varied tasks. Cubes may be differentiated in a variety of ways…

Reading material associated with the tasks is different.
Vocabulary or Word Study words associated with the tasks are different.
Numbers or Math problems associated with the tasks are different.
Tasks on cubes are different. Utilize Bloom's Taxonomy to assist you in creating simpler
or more complex tasks for different cubes.
Tasks on cubes are limited to fewer choices. Limiting choices is simple, put 3 tasks on
two sides each or add Roll Again to one, two, or three sides.
Math computation practice could be done with 2 cubes. One cube with numbers, one cube

Science and Social Studies have many possibilities. Using the current unit of study, topics could
be created to put on a cube and allow students to choose one. (i.e. names of various habitats)
A second cube could include…
Describe it
Tell the parts
of it
Illustrate it
Compare it
Recommend
it
Relate it to
something else
Or for one given topic (i.e. The American Revolution), use this cube…
Explain
reasons for it
Argue for it
Argue
against it
Relate it to
something else
Summarize
events of it
Compare it to
other wars
For response to Reading use the attached cube containing question words. You could add the
additional cube with verbs. Students will read a selection and work in a group to respond to
the reading. Students may roll the dice and get “Who was…” or “Why should...”. They will
then create a question with that starter.
or respond to Reading using a cube to ask students to identify…
