Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on
September 24th, 1896 in Saint Paul,
Minnesota to an upper class family. He was
named after his distant cousin Francis Scott
Key, who wrote the Star Spangled Banner,
which is our country’s national anthem still
to this day. The 1920s proved to be the
most influential decade of Fitzgerald’s
development as a writer. He called this
“The Jazz Age.” Which was a term he
coined, and later everyone began to use.
F. Scott Fitzgerald fell in love with Zelda Sayre while commissioned in
the infantry outside of Camp Sheridan. Zelda was the daughter of an
Alabama Supreme Court Justice. They were married and had one
daughter, whom they named Francis Scott Fitzgerald on October 26th,
1921. Her nickname was “Scottie” in hopes of sounding more like a
girls name.
It is said that Fitzgerald suffered from a
hypo bipolar disorder but psychologists
suggest that this was the main reason that
most of his books were as successful as
they were. Unfortunately, this and
alcoholism lead to the demise of
Fitzgerald. While he was eating a
chocolate bar and reading the newspaper,
he suffered a massive heart attack and
died on December 21st, 1940. He was just
44 years old when he died.
Before we begin to learn about more
aspects of The Great Gatsby, let’s take a
short quiz to refresh our memories
about what we just learned about the
author! If you aren’t ready, go ahead

the capitals of Europe collecting jewels, hunting big game, painting a
little. Then came the war, old sport. Every allied government gave me a
decoration.”

we beat on, boats against the current, born back ceaselessly into the past.”
• ”It is invariably saddening to look through new eyes at things upon which
you have expended your own powers of adjustment.”
