Readability of Textbooks and Materials
• Understand the Importance
Readability Plays in Learning
• Tools - Determine the Readability
of Text
• Strategies - bring the readability
down without changing the content
(auto summary, replace high syllable words thesaurus, shorten sentences, narrow
margins, color backgrounds, spacing, font
and size, teach with visuals content specific
vocabulary, text-to-speech)
• Check for supplemental materials that come
with your textbook
If students can’t
read it
They can’t
understand it
They can’t
learn it
They can’t
practice it
They can’t
implement it
