Griffith (1916) turned it into a medium of social expression It is a reflection of an era’s social issues and aids in our collective remembrance of the times Interestingly enough, horror films are often used in this way During the Depression the gangster emerged as the hero for the city boy Gangster films became a lucrative business until 1934 The Production Code insisted that movies should not be sympathetic to crime, wrong doing, evil or sin Warner Brothers was faced with a problem How do you make a gangster film without violating the Production Code? The answer was to lead viewers away from admiration of the rugged individualism of crime kings Movies should emphasize that team work was necessary to improve society They focused on the impact of chance and environmental circumstance on young lives Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) was a pulpit for this social crusade Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) Trailer (3:11) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nld4DcRHME0 Movie Review Angels With Dirty Faces/Film Review/Slant Magazine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nld4DcRHME0 Supplementary Material Web Articles They Ain’t So Tough - NYTimes.com http://www.nytimes.com/1992/06/07/books/they-ain-t-so-tough.html Home Brewed Mojo: COME UP AND GET ME COPPERS! http://homebrewedmojo.blogspot.com/2015/05/come-up-and-get-me-coppers.html Huntz Hall, Perpetual Youth in ‘Bowery’ Films Dies at 78 http://www.nytimes.com/1999/02/02/arts/huntz-hall-perpetual-youth-in-bowery-films-dies-at-78.html YouTube Parkinson BBC James Cagney Pat O’Brien 70s (2:24) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_x1Pu6dq8s TCM Tribute to James Cagney (5:19) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG9Up6cjM7k Closure - Discussion Review Assessment (Summative) - Quiz on Assigned Article or Video Assessment (Formative) - Prepared for Class/Time on Task Extension Activity - James Cagney Documentary (46::34) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gntDlbgCtY Wall Street (6.2.12.D.k) Do Now Assignment Review Assigned Article for Quiz Lesson Objective (Essential Question) - Is greed good? Agenda Notes and Lecture The inspiration for The Godfather was a cameo appearance by a Mafia don in Mario Puzo’s classic, but little read novel The Fortunate Pilgrim Marlon Brando modeled his aging don after Frank Costello The prospect of such a film aroused the anger of the Italian community New York mobster Joe Columbo declared war on the movie and used intimidation to stop its production Only the promise not to use the word mafia enabled filming to go unmolested Once appeased, Columbo became dangerously enamored with the film He even managed to have one of his own cast as Carlo, Don Corleone’s son-in-law The Godfather defined the genre of the modern gangster film It weaves disparate stories into a collective whole Individual issues are blended with complimentary themes universal in scope Don Vito Corleone is a most complex character as he balances family with business Family responsibility, the corrupting influence of power and a father’s legacy consume him These are themes Shakespearean in nature It is a story set in an ethnic world that could have been set anywhere One of the most important characters in The Godfather is Michael’s finance Kay Adams She represents us, the outsider gradually becoming aware of a world of shadows The Godfather Trailer (HD) - (1:34) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY1S34973zA Movie Review The Godfather Movie Review& Film Summary (1972)/Roger Ebert http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-godfather-1972 Supplementary Material Web Articles When the Real Mafia Tried to Stop Filming of the Godfather http://knowledgenuts.com/2014/02/07/when-the-real-mafia-tried-tostop-filming-of-the-godfather/ The Godfather - The New York Times (Making of the Godfather a Sort of a Home Movie) https://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/movies/bestpictures/godfather-ar1.html Was James Caan Offered Al Pacino’s Role as Michael Corleone? http://zap2it.com/2013/06/the-godfather-was-james-caan-offered-al-pacinos-role-as-michael-corleone/ Following Brando’s Comedic Instincts in The Godfather http://splitsider.com/2012/07/following-brandos-comedic-instincts-in-the-godfather/ YouTube Behind the Scenes of the Godfather - 1972 (8:36) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APdGc6inL5c Closure - Discussion Review Assessment (Summative) - Quiz on Assigned Article or Video Assessment (Formative) – Prepared for Class/Time on Task Extension Activity - The Mafia - The Godfather and the Mob - Fact and Fiction (47:34) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7USr_xnqM0 The Killing Fields (6.2.12.D.k) Do Now Assignment - Review Assigned Article for Quiz Lesson Objective (Essential Question) - Why is legend more marketable than history? Agenda Notes and Lecture We must be very careful of accepting film as historical truth Hollywood is really not interested in truth It makes films based on legend The truth is too full of unanticipated twists of fate Hollywood smooths these into a set formula A case is point is Oliver Stone’s JFK Stone is really not interested in historical accuracy JFK is a puppet he manipulates to present his biased view of the Kennedy assassination The Killing Fields is different It tells a story of a Cambodian who disappears behind the bamboo curtain when the Khmer Rouge takes over Cambodia There are no clichés…no Rambo It is a story of survival seen through the eyes of Dith Pran, a Cambodian refugee Upon his escape he dedicated himself to making people aware of the Cambodian Holocaust Dith Pran was played by Dr. Haing S. Agenda Notes and Lecture The Shawshank Redemption fits into the category of what is referred to as the new classic It doesn’t have to meet any criteria…You just know that it is a classic The film was inspired by Stephen King’s novel Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption It is not about a hero, but our relationship with him…our curiosity, pity, and admiration The screenplay for The Shawshank Redemption breaks the rules on showing vs telling Remaining true to King’s novel it uses a narrator to move the story along When dubious about this technique screenwriter/director Frank Darabont remembered its use in Goodfellas Morgan Freeman is our surrogate in this story His calm observant voice includes us in a prison family and his redemption is ours A piece of symbolism essential to Shawshank is the library It represents intellectual freedom…a place of imagination…a place to change The film also utilizes the concept of mentor characters The character of Brooks, the old librarian, is a Dark Mentor Andy is a Light Mentor …Keep true to yourself, don’t lose hope, bide your time, wait for your chance The Shawshank Redemption received good reviews, but experienced little box office success Home video turned it into a must see film People appreciated a film that played more like a spiritual experience than a movie Life is a prison.
