Verbes Irréguliers mais Incontournables!

As we saw briefly last week, there is a group of IR verbs that do not follow the regular “Mississippi”
conjugation that we have practiced since September. Before we look at how these "rebel verbs" are
conjugated differently, let’s review the REGULAR Mississippi verbs:
FINIR
je finis
nous finissons
tu finis
vous finissez
il/elle/on finit
ils/elles finissent
tu finis = you finish
you are finishing
you do finish
Est-ce que tu finis = Are you finishing? /Do you finish?
Tu ne finis pas = You aren't finishing./You don't finish.
Quelques verbes IR utiles:
accomplir = to accomplish
applaudir = to applaud
avertir = to warn
bâtir = to build
choisir = to choose
établir = to establish
finir = to finish
grandir = to grow up
grossir = to gain weight
maigrir = to lose weight
nourir = to feed
obéir = to obey
réfléchir = to think/reflect
remplir = to fill up
réussir = to succeed
rougir = to blush
The group of Rebel IR verbs follow a different conjugation model. Let’s look:
SERVIR
je sers
nous servons
tu sers
vous servez
il/elle/on sert
ils/elles servent
Quelques verbes IR Rebels:
servir = to serve
sortir= to go out/exit
partir = to leave
dormir = to sleep
mentir = to lie/fib
sentir = to smell/feel
tu finis = you serve
you are serving
you do serve
Est-ce que vous servez = Are you serving?
Do you serve?
*Notice that the first three conjugations (je/tu/il) drop the last consonant along with the IR
before adding the endings -S, -S, -T (i.e. servir, partir, sortir, dormir, sentir, mentir)
*The last three conjugations (nous/vous/ils) drop only the IR (servir, partir, sortir, dormir, sentir,
mentir) and add the endings –ONS, EZ, ENT.
I. Respond to the following questions in FRENCH with a complete sentence. Each
answer should contain the appropriate conjugation of one of the "Rebel" IR verbs in the
PRESENT tense (see the list on page 1). Pay close attention to the example above when
you decide how to conjugate these new verbs!
1. Does the cafeteria serve pizza often? (vocab - la caféteria)
