Advanced Placement Biology 2011/2012 academic year Readings from Biology (Campbell and Reece, 7th edition) and Cliff’s AP Biology & Topic Sequence, Readings, Laboratory Activities, Projects, Field Experiences and Assessments - a Tentative Schedule The following table lays out our course for this class. Due to the vast amount of content covered, class lectures will strive to elucidate main ideas presented in the assigned readings. Questions and discussion are encouraged over material read outside of class. It is critical that you keep up with the assigned reading! After reading each assigned chapter, a Chapter Review will be due from you at the end of each week (at the beginning of class) unless specified otherwise. Each Chapter Review should consist of: 1. a Chapter Quiz (located on your CD ROM- chapter #/chapter quiz (not self quiz)). To conserve cellulose please print off only the first page of the summary report of your results. (You can take this quiz as often as you wish, highest score is entered for your Chapter Review Score). 2. all of the Concept Checks for each assigned chapter section, 3. your response to the Evolution Connection (EC), Science Technology and Society (STS) and Scientific Inquiry (SI) questions at the end of each chapter and 4. a scored practice quiz from the Cliffs AP Biology book. As with the Campbell Biology text the reading assignment is given below (under AP Topic/Cliffs AP Biology heading), please answer the Sample Questions (multiple choice section only). Answer these questions without the aid of the text, and then compare your answers to the annotated answers provided at the end of the section. Make a valiant effort to understand why you missed a particular question. This element is graded on completion. Non scored quizzes receive 75% credit. 5. Friday (unless specified otherwise) quizzes will be given to give you feedback on your understanding of reading content assigned for that week( it might be a good idea to review questions from the chapter quiz/quizzes assigned that week and Cliffs notes review questions(hint-hint), activity-based questions (i.e. lectures, labs, reading, etc. that we did as a class that week-(just to keep you on your toes) and scientific roots/suffixes and prefixes -study 10 root terms each week (not cumulative):, i.e. week 1=terms 1-10/ week 2 = terms 11-20/week 3 = terms 21-30 etc.) It is recommended that the readings are completed at the beginning of each week so that you can ask questions during lectures and are familiar with the material for scheduled quizzes. This schedule is also posted on the AP Biology Share Point Site.
