Hair is composed of 3 principal parts:
• Cuticle:outer coating
composed of overlapping
scales
• Cortex:protein rich
structure around the
medulla that contains
pigment
• Medulla:central core (may
be absent)
The word "hair" usually refers to two
distinct structures:
• the part beneath the skin, called the hair follicle. This
organ is located in the dermis and maintains stem cells,
which not only re-grow the hair after it falls out, but also
are recruited to regrow skin after a wound.
• the shaft, which is the hard
filamentous part that
extends above the skin
surface.
Facts about hair…
• Hair is composed of the
protein keratin, which is also
the primary component of
finger and toe nails
• Humans develop hair follicles during fetal development and
no new follicles are produced after birth
• Hair colour is mostly the result of pigments, which are
chemical compounds that reflect certain wavelengths of
visible light
• Gray hair occurs when melanin production decreases or
stops
Shampoos and conditioners
tend to penetrate through
the channels between
cuticle layers and then
through the junction of
cuticle layers and the
cortex.
Colours…
All natural hair colours are the result of two types of hair
pigments. Both of these pigments are melanin types,
produced inside the hair follicle. Melanin is the dominant
pigment in brown hair, and black hair, while pheomelanin is
dominant in red hair. Blond hair is the result of having little
pigmentation in the hair.
Hairstyle
A hairstyle or haircut refers to the styling of hair. The
fashioning of hair can be considered as an aspect of
personal grooming, fashion and cosmetics, although
practical, cultural and popular considerations also influence
some hairstyles.

In ancient Greece
Classical Greek hairstyles were very
special. They used to have their hair
pulled back into a chignon style.
Many hairstyles involved braiding the
hair and fixing it to the head and
decorating with flowers, headbands,
ribbons and pieces of metal. Blondes
were very rare but a lot of women
tried to colour their hair blonde or
even red.
In ancient Greece…
Ancient Greeks also used to sprinkle gold powder into
the hair. Men used to have short or shaved hair and they
used to grow beards .
