Group Reflection Paper: Ethics in The World of Technology
Technology is no longer a new tool in education that constantly changes and offers new
opportunities for teaching and learning. It is also a tool that able to reshape our world as well as to
create a host of ethical questions that must be dealt with. So what is ethnic? It is not same as morals. It
is actually describes the character of one's profession or one's religion of practice. (Simpson, 2004)
Spamming or hacking to be one of the ethical issues. There is a case happened in March 2005
whereby a hacker posted detailed instructions on a Business Week Online forum and caused many
business school admission files were targeted by computer. This had lead to in total around 200
applicants from a few business schools were able to look to their application files. Harvard Dean Kim
B. Clark said “those who have hacked into this web site have failed to pass the test” (Wiesman,
2005).In my opinion, I did agree that punishment should be done towards those applicants especially
the main hacker. Punishment could be one of the ways to create awareness among public that
spamming or hacking but is not a legal or proper act and it should not be done. In order to solve
hacking or spamming in an ethical yet professional way, we can try to download some useful
softwares such as Firewall to prevent others access to our computer. Apart from this, we should
updated softwares and system from time to time. A system that has not been updated recently has flaw
in it that can be taken advantages of by hackers.
Copyright is an important issue that always been discussed no matter in education,
entertainment or any other fields. Due to availability in accessing the resources from internet, it has
caused copyright issue and huge debate among the public. The same issue happened to us as a student
as well. We usually have to refer or read through others' research or ideas in order to complete our
assignments or works. However, sometimes we did plagiarize others’ work without notice as there are
only a few words were taken and included in our own works. In other to solve such issue, students
should be taught to cite all the ideas or thoughts with name of researchers and other relevant
information. Otherwise, students should be encouraged to study more references and have a clearer
picture of their works or assignments. Then, they could make their own sentences in their own words
and try to be creative and innovative to generate their own ideas or concepts.
Also, spreading rumours through the various kind of social media and apps such as Facebook,
Twitter, Wechat, Skype and so on has become one of the most serious ethical issues. Despite the
incredible pace of technologies’ emergence, we should look at technology as a double-edged sword.
This is because misuse of technology may result in many ethical issues and adverse effects not only
among the local communities, but also countrywide and even worldwide. Yes, it is true that we could
easily get access to various kind of information through different social media. Yet, there is no any
agency or relevant authorities that monitor the trust wordiness or accuracy of the information. (Behiye
A., 2008) Consequently, inaccurate information can cause confusion in society, medical and legal
issues, and even leading to big chaos of demonstrations or revolutions.
Cyber bullying is an action which being cruel to others by sending or posting harmful
material using technological means; an individual or group that uses information and communication
involving electronic technologies to facilitate deliberate and repeated harassment or threat to an
individual or group. Example of cyber bullying are repeatedly sending threats message , or abusive
message or spreading rude rumors about an individual which damage her reputation. It is common
among the students. Some of the victims chose to commit suicides thinking it as the best solutions.
We should be taught to learn to respect others and don't hurt people's feeling. Be responsible when
you are online so that no one will be the victims because of your words and actions. (Cheryl R.V,
2003 )
In conclusion, technology is a very power source. It can either be a very beneficial and useful
source to get access to all information all over the world, or a very evil source that people misuse it in
bad ways and also to hack people's data for certain purpose. Thus, we as human beings that granted
with intelligence have to be wise when using technology and should not involve in any ethical issues
or abuse the technology for ill intentions.
