Industrial Extension Service (IES) http://www.ies.ncsu.edu/, and its Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) provides extensive technical assistance, training and services to companies to increase productivity, efficiency, quality, and profits. Last year IES worked with 253 companies (32 manufacturing firms) in the region with significant impact on revenues ($56.3 million) and job creation. The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) focuses on small and medium-sized manufacturers, and over the last four years worked with 74 companies with a $134.4 million impact in the region. Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) http://www.sbtdc.org/ The SBTDC is a UNC system program with offices on each campus and managed by NC State. The SBTDC provided core services to 1,083 companies in the region including in-depth management counseling, financing, marketing, human resources, operations, business and strategic planning, and feasibility assessment. The SBTDC also helps economic and community development organizations, educational institutions and not-for-profit organizations develop strategies and action plans. SBTDC is headquartered in Raleigh and operates campus offices at NC Central University, UNCChapel Hill and NC State University. NC Cooperative Extension http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/ provides research-based educational information and access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University, and programs that enhance agricultural, forest and food systems, develop responsible youth, build quality communities, and conserve and improve the environment and natural resources. Extension benefits to the region exceeded $9.2 million in FY 2009. McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education (MCE&CE) http://www.mckimmon.ncsu.edu/ serves as a gateway to the intellectual and technical resources at NC State University, offering lifelong non-credit education and meeting facilities. NC State extension provided 3,516 programs to 238,353 citizens in the region. NC State University has 13,766 enrolled students, 57,069 alumni and 14,695 employees in the region. NC State Programs and Partnerships in RTRP NCSU Research Activity: $206,143,934 in sponsored research and engagement awards in FY 2008-2009; with support from the Office of Technology Transfer, faculty made 54 patent disclosures, 108 patent filings and created four new spin-off companies. Centennial Campus: Over 130 tenants including private firms/enterprises, governmental agencies, and NC State research and academic units including the Colleges of Engineering, Textiles, and Veterinary Medicine, on over 1300 acres of land and 2.7 million sq ft of labs, offices, classrooms and multipurpose space in the internationally-renowned 25 year-old science and technology park. Kenan Fellows: A competitive two-year $25,000 fellowship offered to K-12 public school teachers. Eight of the 13 RTRP counties have Kenan Fellows currently in place, with five new Fellows in the class of 2012 selected with 11 mentors recruited. Economic Development Partnership: Operates the Precision Marketing/Industry Cluster collaborative effort with strong interaction among RTRP staff, Wake Economic Development, NC Department of Commerce and all RTRP regional county economic development agencies. EDP played a prominent role in amassing critical NC State institutional support on key corporate recruitment projects including IEM (Serious Gaming, 430 jobs, $63,000/yr.), Deutsche Bank (Financial Services, 319 jobs, $88,000/yr.) and Zeiss Optronics USA (Defense/Military/Homeland Security). Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC): Provides a wide variety of high-quality education and training to a high-performing, productive workforce for the biomanufacturing industry. 18,000 North Carolinians work in this cluster, 4400 in biomanufacturing—EDP hosted the RTRP economic development action committee at BTEC. Shelton Leadership Center: Annual Shelton Leadership Forum with over 800 participants, provides values-based leadership development for corporations, educational institutions, community agencies, public officials, and the military. Institute for Emerging Issues: Annual Forum in 2010 attracted 1200 attendees, focusing on Creativity and Innovation as drivers of economic development. Downtown Design Center: Promotes the concept of universal design in construction and manufacturing disciplines through research, design assistance and training. Lonnie Poole Golf Course and Turf Management, Golf Management Programs: Arnold Palmer-designed championship public golf course on Centennial Campus serves as a first-class competitive venue for the NC State Women’s and Men’s intercollegiate golf teams as well as a laboratory for research and development on an Audubon Society certified course. Institute for Nonprofits: Serves a center of expertise and generator of knowledge for non-profit sector, and host of collaborative and diverse community of scholars, and also hosts the Philanthropy Journal. Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS): Provides research-based innovation management solutions to companies. NC LIVE and NCSU Library: Functions as a gateway to the combined electronic resources of NC libraries. NC LIVE currently offers on-line access to articles from 5,500 newspapers, journals and magazines, and indexing for over 10,000 periodical titles. NC Solar Center: Provides technical assistance and policy analysis for the state, region and local government as well as private industry and educational institutions in renewable energy, green technologies, energy efficiency and sustainable energy, and also maintains national Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy (DSIRE). William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation: Promotes the application of technology in the classroom, supporting STEM educational innovations and public-private partnership benefits to K-12 educators and systems. Nonwoven Cooperative Research Center and Textile Protection and Comfort Center: Nationally-recognized nonwoven textiles research and new product development centers that protect the military, first responders, and the general public, as well as creating spin-off companies from its 69-corporate membership base. NCSU Center for Student Leadership, Ethics, and Public Service (CSLEPS): Provides leadership education and furnishes opportunities for students to address social justice issues, including volunteer service opportunities such as Stop Hunger Now and other worthy community service efforts. County-Based Research, Education, Extension Programs and Facilities: Oxford/Granville County Tobacco Research Station focuses on crop research. Umstead Research Station in Butner focuses on dairy and forages. Central Crop Research Station at NC State focuses on tree and small fruits, vegetables, grains, peanuts and turf grass. Equine Health Center at Southern Pines offers CEM import quarantine, equine reproduction ophthalmology, podiatry rehabilitation and diagnostic testing services.
