Background: Pervasive disparities in health care are well documented and high-quality care cannot be
achieved without equity. Essential Hospital Engagement Network (EHEN) has a special focus on
increasing health equity for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged patients. The first step in
resolving health disparities is the consistent and reliable collection of race, ethnicity and language
(REAL) data.
Purpose: The EHEN Equity Action Team will bring together the experience and expertise of our
members to develop materials that will support the consistent and meaningful collection and use of
standardized REAL data.
Goals: The Action Team will work with EHEN and expert consultants to:
 Create an inventory of best practices on REAL data collection
 Develop an e-learning REAL training module and certification program
 Deploy the finalized e-learning training module to appropriate staff and incorporate into
hospital learning management system
Timeframe: Action Team will be effective through December 2014.
Action Team member will serve as the primary point of contact with the Action Team and EHEN.
The ideal candidate will have sufficient authority to institute change, help overcome barriers and
have expertise in the hospitals’ registration system and knowledge of REAL data and collection.
Role and responsibilities of Action Team member:
 Participate in on-line and telephone survey of current practices
 Actively participate in conference calls, educational/sharing training webinars and email
discussions
 Engage appropriate support staff in implementing standardized protocols (i.e. frontline
registration, IT staff, quality, etc.)
 Beta-test e-learning module and provide feedback to developers
 Implement finalized e-learning module
 Review, analyze and synthesize resource materials and provide feedback
 Respond in a timely manner to requests for action
Roles and responsibilities of EHEN:
 Provide draft of timeline for Action Team deliverables
 Act as facilitator between expert consultants and Action Team Members
 Set up all conference calls and webinars
 Work with expert consultants to provide marketing and educational training materials
 Respond to all requests from Action Team member in a timely manner
 Provide feedback on beta-testing
