1. Make an observation: look at the green cups in the front of the
room (on the lab desk). Write down everything you see about the
cups. (color, look, shape, what’s in it, etc..)
1. Always follow your teacher’s
instructions.
This includes obtaining your
teacher’s permission to
begin an investigation
and/or to touch any
equipment/supplies
Horseplay or practical jokes
will NOT be tolerated
2. Study the procedure before you
begin
Read ALL directions BEFORE
starting an investigation or lab
activity.
If you have any questions, ask
Mr. Wallace BEFORE you begin
working.
3. Follow all safety restrictions
Goggles and other lab
clothing should be worn…
◦ Any time chemicals, heat, and
glassware are used
◦ During the ENTIRE experiment
◦ During clean up
NO EXCEPTIONS
4. Never eat or drink in the lab.
Never use lab glassware as
food or drink containers.
Do not taste any substances or
draw any materials into a tube
with your mouth.
Never inhale chemicals either.
Do NOT eat, drink, or chew
gum
5. If you spill anything, clean it up
immediately
Report the spill to your
teacher AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE!
6. Know the location and proper use of
the safety equipment in the classroom.
The safety equipment may
include the fire
extinguisher, safety
shower, fire blanket, first
aid kit, and fire alarm.
7. Keep all materials away from
open flames.
Tie back long hair and
loose clothing. Always
slant a test tube away
from yourself and others
when heating.
8. If a fire should break out in the classroom,
report it to the teacher IMMEDIATELY!
If your clothing should catch
fire, smother it with a FIRE
BLANKET
DO NOT RUN!
Move out of the way to allow
your teacher to use the fire
extinguisher.
Then follow the fire drill
instructions to leave the
classroom.
9. Report any accident or injury, no matter
how small, to your teacher.
10. Thoroughly clean your area and your
hands when you are completely finished.
Turn off the water and gas.
Disconnect all electrical devices.
Return all materials.
Dispose of all materials as directed
by your teacher.
Don’t throw paper towels in the sink
Wipe tables if necessary
Final Notes…
Safety in the lab is the MOST important part of an investigation
Misbehaving, disturbing other students, not following safety rules
and/or lab directions is EXTREMELY dangerous and will not be
tolerated
Breaking lab safety rules can result in
◦ Automatic reduction in citizenship grade to a “U”
◦ Dean Referral
◦ Removal from all lab work for the rest of the semester/year

Read the scenario out loud to your group and
discuss what they did incorrectly before writing it
down
