Students of the University of Vienna are entitled, under the “Joint Study“ programme, to study at partner universities for a period ranging from one term to an entire academic year without tuition fees. Grants to cover part of their living expenses (board and lodging) may be applied for. Tuition fees are waived subject to the condition that no academic degree will be acquired based on the credits obtained at the partner university (no-fee/non-degree status). In order to enable them to cover part of their living expenses, nominated candidates will receive a ”Joint Study“ grant. These grants are not cost-covering, but are intended to help students to meet the increase in living expenses occasioned by their stay abroad. Last year, the grant for the USA and Australia amounted to € 400,-- per month, plus a single-payment travel grant, also amounting to € 400,--. As a rule, the amount of the grant may be assumed to be the same as last year, although minor adjustments may have to be made. Recipients of a study grant will continue to receive their study grant payments; they are also entitled to apply for additional assistance (study grant abroad). For more information and for application, please contact the Austrian Study Grant Authority (Studienbeihilfenbehörde) (Gudrunstraße 179 a, A-1100 Wien, Tel.: 01/601730, http://www.stipendium.at/stbh). W ho i s e li gib le fo r pa rti c ipa tion ? American universities require a TOEFL test, Australian partner universities will accept both TOEFL and IELTS. The required minimum number of points on the internet-based TOEFL is 90 out of a total of 120 points; this minimum may be higher in individual cases (e. g., New York University demands a minimum score of 100 points, the University of Chicago a minimum of 104 points). For the paper-based TOEFL, the minimum is 580 points (New York University and the University of Chicago demand a minimum of 600 points) out of a total of 677 points; for the computer-based test, a minimum of 237 points (New York University and the University of Chicago: a minimum of 250 points) out of a total of 300 points is required. Please note: Australian universities, in particular, also require a minimum score for individual – or all - subsections (reading, listening, writing, speaking). Please check the websites of the partner universities beforehand to find out the minimum number of TOEFL or IELTS points required. On the IELTS, a minimum of 6,5 out of a total of 9 points is required (6,5 overall band, 6,0 writing). Individual institutes may also demand higher scores. UNIVERSITÄT WIEN Applications may be submitted by all students of the University of Vienna who, at the time of application, have finished a maximum of 10 semesters of their degree course, who have not yet finished their degree course (Magister/Master) and who have successfully completed the first stage (for bachelor students: a minimum of 2 semesters) of their course. Choi c e of u ni v er si ti e s Generally speaking, applicants are free to choose at what university and during which term they want to study. However, in view of the limited number of places available, it is advisable to list alternatives on the application form. Choice should be determined chiefly by courses offered by the foreign university that are relevant to the applicant’s field of study. In principle, students of all fields of study are eligible for the programme. However, please note that certain subjects cannot be studied on an undergraduate level in American and Australian universities (law in the USA, medicine/pharmacy in the USA and in Australia) and can therefore not be taken into account within the scope of the “Joint Study” programme. At the University of Illinois, access to courses taught at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is extremely difficult for students of media studies and political sciences. Students of economics are only entitled to take courses at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, not at the College of Commerce and Business Administration. The same applies at New York University: courses can only be taken at the College of Arts and Sciences, not at the Stern School of Business or at the School of Law. Georgetown University will not admit students of business administration. The following universities offer only undergraduate courses within the scope of the Joint Study programme: Washington & Jefferson College, Georgetown University, University of Illinois. The University of Queensland offers no graduate courses for students of psychology; the Australian National University offers no graduate courses at the College of Economics and Business and within the Clinical Psychology Program. The University of Sydney accepts no graduate students of psychology or law. At the University of Washington, the following fields are not open to graduate students: law, computer science, arts, pedagogy. At the University of Chicago, each student will be admitted to a maximum of one graduate course (all other courses must be taken at undergraduate level). You are advised to study the websites of the partner universities to which you wish to apply very carefully before submitting your application! In choosing the universities you wish to apply to, please remember that the percentage of applicants who will ultimately be admitted is much lower for the popular universities (to give one example: the overall percentage of admission for USA/Australia is approximately 50%; for Georgetown University or NYU, the maximum percentage of admissions is 10%). Only the most highly qualified applicants will be granted their first preference. UNIVERSITÄT WIEN Georgetown University: fall term 2012 (Aug.–Dec) or spring term 2013 (Jan.–May) DER STIPENDIENAUSSCHREIBUNG Ap pl i cat ion p ro c edu r e a nd d ea dl in es If you are nominated, you will receive the appropriate form from the Student Mobility Office. In order to avoid having to repay the grant, you should obtain a minimum of 12 ECTS points per semester. Ac c o mmod at ion Selected candidates will have to find their own accommodation. However, in the course of the application procedure, the partner university will send you application forms for halls of residence, as well as information regarding private accommodation. Experience has shown that at least in the USA, halls of residence are extremely expensive by Austrian standards. For this reason, most students live off-campus. If you want private accomodation, you are advised to begin your search early (3–4 weeks before the start of your course). The relevant information will be sent by the partner university and may also be found in the reports from former exchange students. E xp ens e s For living expenses (lodging, food, books etc.), you are advised to calculate higher amounts than those required in Austria. In particular, candidates applying to American universities should expect higher costs, especially for books and accommodation. If you are awarded a grant, fluctuations in the exchange rate will not be taken into account. In Australia, living expenses are comparable to those in European countries. However, experience has shown that there, too, more funds will be needed than you would have to spend in Austria.
