LORENZO WALKER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM COURSE: Medical Surgical Nursing II Theory Genitourinary and Reproductive Systems PLACEMENT: Semester 3 – PRN0096 TIME ALLOTMENT: 25 Hours PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to introduce the student genitourinary and reproductive nursing care concepts that will enhance their ability to provide care for patients with diseases and disorders of the genitourinary and reproductive systems utilizing nursing principles. (33.10, 33.11) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will review genitourinary and reproductive structure and function (29.06, 29.07 ), identify signs and symptoms of diseases/disorders of the genitourinary and reproductive system (33.01), identify diagnostic tests and medications used in the treatment of genitourinary and reproductive diseases/disorders (33.02, 33.03,), and identify nutritional needs of patients with genitourinary and reproductive diseases/disorders (33.04). SUMMARY OF UNITS: Unit I - The Patient with Genitourinary Diseases/Disorders Unit II - The Patient with Reproductive Diseases/Disorders METHODS OF EVALUATION: Evaluation will be based upon written objective tests and quizzes as well as instructor assigned projects/assignments, class participation and preparedness. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: For successful completion of this course, the student must have an average grade of 80% based on the two unit exams/assignments and final exam. Additionally, the student must maintain an average score of 80% from all methods of evaluation which includes a GU/GYN Pharmacology Calculations Quiz. Describe the structure and function of the urinary system. 2. Identify and describe the diagnostic laboratory and radiological studies performed on patients with renal problems and identify nursing measures related to the procedure. 3. Identify urinary system drugs used in therapy for renal disorders and discuss the therapeutic effects, side effects and nursing considerations. 4. Identify the causes, prevention and treatment of renal disorders. 5. Identify etiology, symptoms, treatment and nursing management of the patient with the following: Urolithiasis Chronic Glomerulonephritis Hydronephrosis Cystitis Acute Glomerulonephritis Nephrolithiasis Uremia Renal Failure 6. Identify and discuss three types of urinary catheters. 7. Identify the nursing priorities of a patient receiving hemodialysis. 8. Identify the nursing priorities of a patient receiving peritoneal dialysis. 9. Compare and contrast hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in terms of procedure, length of time, equipment and nursing care. 10. Identify and describe the diets used in the treatment of renal disorders. Describe the structure and function of the male and female reproductive system. 2. Identify and describe the physiology, symptoms and emotional responses to menopause. 3. Identify the potential causes of infertility, related diagnostic tests and nursing measures in caring for the patient with infertility issues. 4. Define and discuss the disorders of the female reproductive system including: Amenorrhea, Menorrhagia, Metrorrhagia, Dysmenorrhea, PMS, Toxic Shock Syndrome, Cystocele, Rectocele, Prolapsed Uterus, Vaginitis, Cervicitis, Endometrioisis, PID and Neoplasms of the Ovary, Uterus and Breast. Discuss treatment and nursing considerations related to these disorders. 5. Describe diagnostic tests and common surgical procedures associated with female reproductive disorders. 6. Describe the pre-operative and post-operative management of a patient undergoing breast surgery. 7. Identify the medical approaches to treatment of breast cancer and the related nursing measures. 8. Discuss the nurse’s role in providing emotional support to the patients with disorders of the reproductive system. 9. Describe diagnostic tests and common surgical procedures associated with male reproductive disorders. 10. Define and discuss the disorders of the male reproductive system including: Erectile Disorders, Epididymitis, Orchitis, Spermatic Cord Tension, Hydrocele, Varocele, Cryptorchidism, Phimosis, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Prostate Cancer, and Testicular Cancer. Discuss treatment and nursing considerations related to these disorders. 11. Identify and describe common sexually transmitted diseases (STD), including HIV/AIDS and causative organisms of each. 12. Describe the nursing management of patients with sexually transmitted diseases (STD) including prevention, treatment and patient education.
