Email notifications
• 1st email acknowledges receipt of order
• 2nd email when data is ready to download
– Length of time to extract data depends on extents and
data format selected
Data available to download for
3 days, but can re-order at any
point using ‘My Previous
Downloads’ button
Unzip standard Digimap zip files
• You will download 1 zip archive file for each
order you place in Data Download
• Use the standard Windows unzip facility to
unzip and extract the file contents to a
location on your computer
Unzip standard Digimap zip files
Zip archive file contents:
• Sub-folder for each map product in your order
• Citations and contents text documents at top level
Sub-folder contents
• Within each sub-folder, data files and conditions of use text file.
• Data from Digimap OS is covered by the Digimap licence OR the OS
OpenData licence. So each data folder has a conditions document that
specifies which conditions apply.
• NOTE: for some products, the map data will be zipped in the sub-folder.

Tile sizes
•
Map data from Digimap is typically provided in
tiles that have been referenced to the British
National Grid - exceptions are OS MasterMap
vector data, gazetteers, products provided with
national coverage such as Boundary-Line.
•
Data from Digimap is in a range of sizes, from 1
x 1 km tiles to 100 x 100 km tiles.
•
Typically the more detailed the map data, the
smaller the tile size, e.g.:
Product
Tile size
1:50000 raster
20 x 20 km
1:250000 raster
10 x 10km
Vector Map Local 5 x 5km
1:10000
Vector Map
District 1:50000
100 x 100 km
Merging tiles
• Where tiles are provided in
smaller sizes, e.g. 5 x 5 km,
possible to merge them into one
Image: OS Terrain contours in ArcMap,
for area of South East England
Clipping tiles
• Where tiles are provided
in large sizes e.g. 100 x
100 km, possible to clip
them to smaller area

smaller area in ArcMap
TIFF files
•Raster data (backdrop mapping) all
supplied in TIFF image format, with a
TFW file
•TIFF World Files contains location,
scale and rotation of TIFF map. Keep
in same folder as TIFF files!
Shape files
•
•
•
ArcGIS format,
can be used in
other software
too.
Remember to
keep all
constituent
parts together SHP, DBF, SHX,
PRJ.
