PROGRAM ELEMENTS • • • • • • Cohorts Four Semester Program One evening/two courses Saturday classes for all cohorts National and State Accreditation Leadership Preparation for Equity and Social Justice (Social Justice Framework) The Leadership Preparation Problem …public school in the United States serve as great sorting machines through which inequality and privileges is produced….Those we expect to succeed - children from affluent families-tend to be more likely to succeed, while those we expect to fail-poor children, especially those from the inner-city..tend to be more likely to fail (Noguera, 2001) • The persistent gap in academic achievement and subsequent life chances of racially, ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse groups of students raise questions of social justice . • To address such issues require bold and courageous school leaders who understand the plight of these students and are prepared and willing to disrupt the status quo. Lucas, 2003 “ The Land of Equal Educational Opportunity: Theory Meets Reality • Social justice theorists have shown how inequality is maintained through ostensibly neutral systems, policies and practices “Habitus” • The habitual unquestioning of the core values of the dominant culture, the following of rules, norms, habits, symbols, labels and their consequences in everyday life, that are culturally embodied within ourselves beyond the grasp of consciousness” (Bourdieu, 1977) Questions that guide us… What does educational leadership for social justice within our context look like? • How do educational social justice leaders address issues of equity and access and enhance the education and life chances of all students?
