Issued: Due by: Thursday 17th September Thursday 1st October Year 2/3/4 Big Write homework L:I To write a play script based on a scene in a story Next week we are learning to write play scripts. Please help your child by planning their play script with them ready for next week’s big writing assessment. To help you plan your play script an example of the scene as a play script is attached. This is an extract from the text and therefore is of a higher level than what is expected from your child but it does allow you to see the layout and writing tools we have been teaching. This play script will be based on Chapter 14 ‘Mr Willy Wonka’. When completing your plan / draft you should think about: Which characters are in the scene? What costumes will we need? Where is it set? What props will we need? Where does the scene start? How can we introduce the scene? Who is the dialogue between? When completing your plan / draft you should try to include the following writing tools: A range of punctuation including: capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks, question marks, commas in a list, commas for an embedded clause, brackets Adjectives and similes for description Please remember we do not use inverted commas as we are not quoting what someone has said. Instead we are planning what they are going to say. Attached is an example using the targets above. If you are in need of any further support please do not hesitate to contact me. It might also be useful to look through your child’s book to see the targets they have been working on and the level expected for their age group. Chapter 14 ‘My Willy Wonka’ Scene Characters: Willy Wonka Charlie Bucket Grandpa Joe Augustus Gloop Violet Beauregarde Veruca Salt Mike Teave Scene Props: Wonka factory gates Wonka factory door Scene Setting: This scene takes place outside the Wonka factory when the 5 golden tickets first meet Mr Willy Wonka. The atmosphere is electric and is buzzing with excitement from the crowd. Scene: Mr Wonka appears on stage standing alone just inside the factory gates. The crowd starts to whisper and point. Suddenly, Mr Wonka skips forward and spreads his arms wide. Mr Wonka (speaking with a large smile on his face) : Welcome my little friends! Welcome to the factory! Mr Wonka (continuing in a high and flutey voice) : Will you please come forward one at a time and bring your parents. Augustus Gloop plods forward whilst munching on a bar of chocolate. Mr Wonka (sounding excited) : Augustus! Mr Wonka takes his face in his hands Mr Wonka : My dear boy, how good to see you! Delighted! Charmed! Overjoyed to have you with us! Come on in. Mr Wonka continues to shake Augustus’ parents’ hands. Then he casts his eyes on verruca Salt. He looks her up and down as she confidently steps forward. Veruca Salt: My name is Veruca Salt. Mr Wonka pulls a thinking face. Mr Wonka (speaking seriously) : What a pleasure this is! You do have an interesting name, don’t you? I always thought a verruca was a sort of wart that you got on the sole of your foot! How wrong I must have been. Come on in, I do hope you enjoy. I am sure you will. Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teave step forward. Mr Wonka carefully examines their tickets. He then grabs both their hands and energetically pumps them. Their arms look like they are being pulled off their shoulders by Mr Wonka. Then Charlie Bucket nervously steps forwards. Charlie Bucket (whispering) : I am Charlie Bucket. Mr Wonka (bouncing on the spot from excitement) : Well, well, well! So there you are! You’re the one who found your golden ticket only yesterday, aren’t you? Yes! Yes! I read all about it in this morning’s papers! Just in time my dear boy! And is this your grandfather? Delighted to meet you! Everybody in now? Five children? Yes? Good! Charlie Glanced over his shoulder as Mr Wonka was giving the children and parents a briefing about staying together and not wandering off. The crowd was still shouting. The children and parents slowly follow Mr Wonka into the factory. The scene fades and the door closes behind them.
