Temperate Rain Forest • • • • Have excessive amounts of precipitation. Average about 200-350cm of precipitation annually. The average temperature is 20°C. Mainly found in regions of South America, New Zealand and Australia. They are also found on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. • Plants: Many trees that are found there are Maple, Birch, Oak, Hickory, Sweet Gum. Those types of trees are hardwoods which means that they lose their leaves in the winter. • Animals: Many animals that are found there are Squirrels, Bear, Deer, and various species of birds. Tropical Rain Forest • The average temperature is 25-29°C and there is very little season variation. • The Rain Forest gets 200-400cm of rain yearly. • This type of Rain Forest is commonly found along the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator. • Plants: Bromeliads, Mushrooms, various herbs, Kapok Tree, and orchids. • Animals: Many animals found there are various primates, various species of birds, butterflies, frogs, a variety of fish and lizards. The Canopy- The dense ceiling of closely spaced trees and their branches. The Understory- There is a widely space here that contains smaller tree species, and juvenile individuals that are created underneath the Canopy Layer. The Shrub Layer- There are trees located here that only grow from 5 to 20 feet. The Forest Floor- This is made up of fungus, trunks of tree’s and small vegetation. Human Impact • Humans have established communities in there. • Agriculture and development are causing the rain forest’s to be demolished at a rapid rate. • People are harvesting the different plants and foods that are grown in the Rain Forests such as; Avocado, various woods, Nuts, Guava, Bananas, and Cocoa Beans. • Animal habitats are being destroyed due to the impact of the humans. Geological Features… • Rainforests are very wet areas. • They are usually mountainous areas that almost always have small or large waterways flowing through them. • Rainforests usually have waterfalls or rivers and streams running through them. • Rainforests are sometimes flat regions.
