COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the student should:
1) Understand capitalism and business related concepts, principles and practices.
2) Possess a sound business vocabulary, understand common terminology and gain a greater
awareness of the role of business in everyday life.
3) Identify possible career paths and areas of interest for further study.
4) Be able to identify multiple sources of business data and information.
5) Write, present and think critically about topics and issues related to business.
TEACHING METHODS
Primarily lecture and discussion format. Lectures highlight key textbook material. Your
book provides full details and additional related concepts. In-class activities and discussions will
be utilized as well to stimulate creativity, problem solving and critical thinking. Student
participation is encouraged and expected. Outside materials will be utilized (examples, articles,
ads, new reports, etc.) Student research on current business topics will be assigned to enhance
understanding. Students will make in-class presentations from time to time.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance is your responsibility. Regular attendance impacts your understanding of the
subject matter. There is a direct correlation between attendance and grades. Roll will be taken
for recordkeeping purposes and may be used as needed in final grade determination. Remember:
missing one night of an evening class is the equivalent of a full week of classes!
INSTITUTIONAL POLICIES
Each student is responsible for either being aware of or referring to as needed the information
contained in the TCC Catalog, Student Handbook, Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook
and all key dates and information related to the TCC Semester Schedule and this class schedule.
FAILURE TO WITHDRAW POLICY
It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from the class if the need arises. To withdraw,
the student should initiate an official withdrawal. Non-attendance DOES NOT constitute official
withdrawal. The student who neither attends nor drops the class will receive the grade earned
based on the work completed. Failure to withdraw may result in the student receiving a final
grade of “F” at the end of the semester. The student should be aware of the dates which allow
for a withdrawal with a refund. Students not withdrawing by the prescribed date will incur the
normal tuition, fees, charges, etc for the class.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Academic dishonesty or misconduct includes, but is not limited to, cheating and plagiarism.
It is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the TCC system. Most cases of academic
dishonesty are governed by the Student Code of Conduct which can be found at the MyTCC site.
Forms of authority delegated to faculty for disciplinary action include but are not limited to:
 Requiring a student to redo an assignment or test; or requiring the student to complete a
substitute assignment or test
 Recording a “zero” for the assignment or test in question
 Recommending to the student that the student withdraw from the class or
administratively withdrawing the student from the class
 Recording a grade of “F” for the student at the end of the semester
 Filing a complaint and requesting that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the
administrative level.
CELL PHONE POLICY AND ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS
No cell phones or other electronic communication devices may be used during class time.
Place your phone and vibrate and in an emergency, leave the classroom to make a call or respond
