COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student should: 1) Understand capitalism and business related concepts, principles and practices. 2) Possess a sound business vocabulary, understand common terminology and gain a greater awareness of the role of business in everyday life. 3) Identify possible career paths and areas of interest for further study. 4) Be able to identify multiple sources of business data and information. 5) Write, present and think critically about topics and issues related to business. TEACHING METHODS Primarily lecture and discussion format. Lectures highlight key textbook material. Your book provides full details and additional related concepts. In-class activities and discussions will be utilized as well to stimulate creativity, problem solving and critical thinking. Student participation is encouraged and expected. Outside materials will be utilized (examples, articles, ads, new reports, etc.) Student research on current business topics will be assigned to enhance understanding. Students will make in-class presentations from time to time. ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance is your responsibility. Regular attendance impacts your understanding of the subject matter. There is a direct correlation between attendance and grades. Roll will be taken for recordkeeping purposes and may be used as needed in final grade determination. Remember: missing one night of an evening class is the equivalent of a full week of classes! INSTITUTIONAL POLICIES Each student is responsible for either being aware of or referring to as needed the information contained in the TCC Catalog, Student Handbook, Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook and all key dates and information related to the TCC Semester Schedule and this class schedule. FAILURE TO WITHDRAW POLICY It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from the class if the need arises. To withdraw, the student should initiate an official withdrawal. Non-attendance DOES NOT constitute official withdrawal. The student who neither attends nor drops the class will receive the grade earned based on the work completed. Failure to withdraw may result in the student receiving a final grade of “F” at the end of the semester. The student should be aware of the dates which allow for a withdrawal with a refund. Students not withdrawing by the prescribed date will incur the normal tuition, fees, charges, etc for the class. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty or misconduct includes, but is not limited to, cheating and plagiarism. It is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the TCC system. Most cases of academic dishonesty are governed by the Student Code of Conduct which can be found at the MyTCC site. Forms of authority delegated to faculty for disciplinary action include but are not limited to: Requiring a student to redo an assignment or test; or requiring the student to complete a substitute assignment or test Recording a “zero” for the assignment or test in question Recommending to the student that the student withdraw from the class or administratively withdrawing the student from the class Recording a grade of “F” for the student at the end of the semester Filing a complaint and requesting that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level. Place your phone and vibrate and in an emergency, leave the classroom to make a call or respond to a text. Only hard copy submissions of assignments will be accepted to earn up to full credit. Once collected you can still take that evening or at the next scheduled class session at a 50% point penalty. Assignments are due on the date specified by the end of that evening’s class. No exceptions. Assignments can be turned in to the Instructor’s mailbox in ACS, SEC 2202 or SEC 4112, prior to the due date or by a fellow student on the due date. A late assignment can be turned in at any time after it is due until the last night of the semester. A 50% point penalty is assessed for late assignments. One exam can be made up with valid reason. The exam must be taken before the next scheduled class meeting. Any additional make-up exams by the same student are assessed a 20% point penalty.
