Filmmaking and Intercultural Communication in Prague, Berlin, and Amsterdam Set your sights eastward to central Europe and join us for SBCC’s summer abroad program in Prague, Berlin and Amsterdam. You will have the opportunity to study the most important part of intercultural communication, which is the psychology of intergroup relations and, at the same time learn the art of filmmaking. In the filmmaking class, you will be challenged to find and document your own stories of the people, the land, and their history. The course in intercultural communication will provide you with a theoretical understanding of your experiences and a framework by which to document it. She is a tenured instructor in the Communication Department with a Ph.D. from UCSB. Dr. Hutchinson has been teaching at SBCC for more than 10 years and has directed numerous study abroad programs to destinations including Australia, India, Spain and Portugal, Rwanda, South Africa and London. She also spent one year as the traveling professor for the University of Colorado’s Education Abroad Program, during which she traveled throughout North America, Asia, and Europe teaching students Intercultural and Interpersonal Communication, Conflict, and Leadership. During her undergraduate education she studied abroad at the University of Costa Rica. Dr. Hutchinson has written textbooks in each of her areas of expertise, Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication, and she looks forward to teaching these classes once again in a foreign setting where everyday life becomes a classroom! Professor Curtis Bieber has worked on the creative side of Film and Video Production for over 19 years as a Director, Cinematographer, Editor and Motion Graphic Artist for clients such as Nike and Volkswagen. His work has been shown theatrically, and broadcast in North America, Europe and Japan. In addition to living abroad for two years, he has traveled to over 30 countries in six continents. He has directed SBCC’s study abroad programs in Australia, Spain and Portugal, and Rwanda. Professor Bieber is Chair of the Film and Television Production Department at Santa Barbara City College, and has taught Production for 13 years, and has lectured at UCSB and Antioch University. Program Requirements Financial Aid You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC, but you must enroll for the 2014 summer session to participate in the Prague, Berlin, and Amsterdam program. You do not have to be a communication or film studies major. You must be 18 years old to participate and are required to attend an orientation meeting scheduled in early May. Courses and Credits These courses are transferable to UC and CSU. Check with your counselor for possible exceptions. You are required to enroll in 6 units. Please do not go to the Admissions Office to register. Approximate Program Cost $4250 (Does not include airfare.) (Cost is based on 20 participants.) Includes: Shared housing (2 students per room) in hotel, most breakfasts, listed excursions, visits, use of filming equipment, and biking tour. Not included: Airfare, transportation to and from airport, passport fees, SBCC fees (non-residents are required to pay out-of-state fees,) textbooks, personal expenses and any other item not specifically listed as included. Financial Aid is not awarded for summer programs; however, if you need assistance you may want to visit the SBCC Financial Aid Office to inquire about loans Scholarships If you would like to apply for an SBCC scholarship, please pick up a scholarship application form in the SBCC Study Abroad Office. You can also print one from the study abroad website, www.sbcc.edu/studyabroad. The deadline for submission for summer programs is May 1st.Award amounts vary according to the number of qualified applicants. How to Apply Deadline for application: April 15, 2014. We encourage early application as the number of places in the program is limited. In addition, early application allows you more time to plan for the trip. A $____ nonrefundable deposit is required at the time of application. If you are not currently attending SBCC, you must enroll. You can enroll online at www.sbcc.edu/apply/ or attach an SBCC enrollment form to your application. An interview with the program directors will be scheduled upon receipt of your application and deposit. If you live outside the Santa Barbara area, the directors will interview you by telephone. Information Meetings You are invited to an information meeting on: Monday, November 18th 1:00 p.m. Communications Lab, BC-102 More meetings will be scheduled in the spring and will be listed on the SBCC Study Abroad website, www.sbcc.edu/studyabroad. Meetings are about an hour long. Attendance is not mandatory for participation in the program. Parents are welcome to attend. Travel and Housing Registering with Tour Resource Consultants. SBCC has contracted with Tour Resource Consultants (TRC) to provide travel and housing arrangements for the program. After you are accepted by SBCC to the program, you will register online with TRC and receive payment, housing and travel arrangement information from them. You will not be officially part of the program until we have received confirmation from TCR that you have registered and paid your deposit. Transportation. TRC will make group flight arrangements. You will receive more information about the group flight after being accepted to the program. You are responsible for making your own ground transportation arrangements to and from the airport from which the flight departs in the United States. expenses and emergency medical transportation. Additional optional cancellation insurance available at an additional cost. Program Payments. TRC will provide you with a tour code, which will be established for this program. With this code, you can register securely online and make payments online at www.tourresource.com via credit card, debit card, or e-check, at no extra cost.
