ABIM Maintenance of
Certification (MOC) Process*
*ABIM ≠ ACP
What Do I Need To Know and Where Do I
Start?
Basics
• Go to abim.org and enroll if you have not
yet done so
– Fee includes all of the ABIM modules & the fee to
take the exam
• Find out what you are already doing that
will earn credit
• Choose MOC projects/education that fit
into your life and practice life
• Pass the exam
What if you don’t enroll in MOC
or are not meeting
requirements?
“Participating in MOC” will be
the new language
abim.org
⏎
⏎
**How do I meet MOC
requirements?**
• Complete any MOC activity every two years*
• Earn 100 MOC points every 5 years* in the following
distribution:
– At least 20 medical knowledge points
– At least 20 practice assessment points
• Participate in an approved patient safety activity and “patient
voice” activity every 5 years
• Pass the exam
*Points earned every two years will also count toward your 5-year requirement
Notes on the Exam
• Pass the examination every 10 years from
when it was last passed.*
– You must pass a separate exam for every certificate that
you wish to maintain
– If you were certified before 1990 (and have time-unlimited
certifications), you will remain certified even if you do not
participate in MOC or pass the exam
– If you were certified before 1990/have time-unlimited
certifications, you have until December 31, 2023 to pass
the secure examination
Notes on the Patient Safety and
Patient Voice requirements
• Requirements introduced in 2014
• Requirements must be met by 12/31/18
and every 5 years thereafter

Modules
**MOC Practice Assessment –
The Basics**
You may report retroactively or prospectively
1. Collect baseline data on 25 patient records
2. Review data and select 3 QI measures to
improve on
3. Implement QI plan (minimum of 3 months)
4. Review follow-up data on 25 patient records (no
more than 12 months after baseline)
5. Report findings to ABIM and get 20 hours of
MOC “PIM” credit
Examples of PIMs/Practice
Assessment Projects
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
ABIM CV risk evaluation PIM - 15 hours of work
Clerk handed out TdaP VISs to patients - reviewed 25 charts before and after - felt to
be easy and helpful
ABIM osteoporosis project - 25 charts for vitamin D and DEXA screens, reviewed
charts pre and post - felt to be about 15 hours, helpful
ABIM DM module improving A1cs in patients with very high A1cs - took 40 hours,
little benefit
Chart reviews on diabetics, referred 25 with high A1cs to DM education, reported
results
Self-directed vaccination rate project – reported on data collected as part of a team
on HPV series start, HPV series completion, and TdaP - easy and meaningful
Self-directed PPI use - did a presentation on appropriate/inappropriate PPI use
among inpatients, then reviewed 25 before and after charts - felt to be easy and
valuable
Many options!
**Completed Project PIM**
• Personal anecdote: seems much easier, since it’s more
likely to be work you’ve already done
• Allows reporting data in aggregate rather than
individually
1. Collect baseline data on at least 25 patient records
2. Select 3 QI measures to improve on
3. Implement QI plan (3 -12 months)
4. Review follow-up data on at least 25 patients
• If the QI measures you choose are not in the ABIM QI
measures “library”/database, you can request approval
• Not recommended for anyone who has never done QI
projects; individuals who have never done QI work
should consider a prospective PIM (very structured)
How to choose a PIM –
abim.org

⏎

**Completed Project PIM
advice**
• Choose a QI project you are involved in that
is already being worked on for 3-12 months
that involves at least 25 patients
– CAUTI, CLABSI, foley use, VTEp, PUDp, immunizations, diabetic
foot exams, inpatient glycemic control, falls, patient satisfaction
• Select 3 measures either in the ABIM
measures library or write to ABIM to get
approval of your measure
Prospective PIM
• Choose a PIM from the ABIM list or from
ACP
• Review 25 charts for 3 measures
• Implement an intervention
• Review 25 charts for those 3 measures 312 months later
• Enter data and findings into ABIM website
If you have little or
no experience with QI:

Summary
1. Check out the ACP MOC Navigator
2. Go to abim.org and register then enroll in MOC
3. Find out what you are already doing that will earn credit
(MKSAP, national ACP meeting, NEJM Knowledge+, etc) –
and submit for that credit (!)
4. Choose MOC projects/education that fit into your life and
practice life
– Consider the completed project practice assessment
module/PIM
– Choose a project that you’re already working on
– Consider deferring the patient voice requirement until there are
more options
5. Pass the exam
