Warm-up (A1:Beg.)
Transportation-Interviewing Classmates
Even in an ELL 1-2 classroom, several students may already have their Driving
Licenses. Give these students the chance to share their experiences with their
classmates.
The day before this activity, ask the students: “Who already has a Driving
License?” After class, ask these students if they will answer questions about
how they got their Driving Licenses.
On the day of the activity, ask the “Drivers” to come to the front of the
classroom. Ask them to introduce themselves, and write their names on the
board.
The students should be given Interview Sheets. They will ask the following
questions, or make up questions. The students should take turns asking
questions. They may ask the same question to multiple “Drivers”. If the class
is advanced, the students could write the name of the “Driver” and the answer.
It may be a good idea to read and understand the questions before beginning
the activity.

Grammar: Imperatives (A4)
Before and during your driving performance test, the driver examiner will tell you what to
do. These are called imperatives or commands.
Language Example
Han is about to take his driving performance test at the DMV. His driver examiner is
Maria. Before they start, Han needs to show that his vehicle’s safety equipment
works. Han and Maria are sitting in Han’s car. Han is in the driver’s seat and Maria is
in the passenger seat.
Han: Ready to start?
Maria: Please, do not put your car into drive. Before we start the driving test, you
need to show me that your car is safe.
Han: Ok. No problem.
Maria: Turn on your lights.
Han: They are on.
Maria: Good. They work. Turn them off. (Maria steps out of the car and walks to the
back of it) Now, press the brake pedal. I need to see if your taillights work.
Han: Ok. I’m doing it now.
Maria: Thanks. (Maria gets back in the car) Put your emergency break on. (Han puts
the break on) Now, take it off.
Han: Anything else?
Maria: Yes. Turn your windshield wipers on. (Han turns them on). Turn them off.
Han: What next?
Maria: That’s it. Fasten your seatbelt. It’s time to start the test.
Focus on Format.
Imperatives use the base form of a verb. This is the same form as the simple present
tense. Imperative verbs do not add an “s” for third person singular as in the simple
present tense. The same form is used no matter who you are talking to.

Study Skills (A5)
Part 1: Active vs. Passive Study
To pass the written and road tests you will need to know the rules of road in the
Minnesota Driver’s Manual. There is a lot of information to remember. How will you
remember it all?
How do you study for a test?
There are many different ways to study for a test. How do you study for a test? In a small
group, share the different ways you study for a test. Write down at least 3 examples from
your group.
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
Reading the information is one way to study for a test. However, reading is very passive.
That means that you do not do anything to actively study. Your brain will remember
information much better when you use other parts of your body and not just your eyes to
remember information. What are some ways you can study that require you to use other
parts of your body?
_______________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________
What way do you think you would like to actively study? __________________________
How much will you study for the test?
Another important question is how much time you will spend studying for the test. The
more time you spend, the better you will remember the information. However, you need
to plan your time carefully. You need to choose a quiet place and make sure that you can
study without interruptions. What do you think is a good study plan for preparing for
the citizenship test?
Where?
Which days?

Part 2: Applying for a Driver’s Permit and License
To apply for a driver’s permit, go to the DMV. Bring your ID, your social
security number, and cash or check to pay the fees. At the DMV, you will fill
out an application. When you hand in your application you will need to show
that you live in Minnesota. This is called proof of address. Also, you will pay
the fee. Then your eye sight will be tested.
Your knowledge of traffic signs and driving rules will be tested on the
computer. This is the written test. It is available in many languages. You
cannot make an appointment to take the test. You can take it any time. If you
pass, you will be given your driver’s permit. A driver’s permit allows you to
practice driving with a licensed driver.
After you practice driving with your driver’s permit for at least three months,
you can apply for your driver’s license. You apply for your driver’s license at
the DMV. At the DMV, you will fill out an application. When you hand in your
application you need to show your driver’s permit. Also, you will pay the fee.
Since you already passed the written test, now you will take your road test.
You need to make an appointment for the road test. Also, you need to bring a
vehicle to use during the test. It needs to have working equipment such as
lights, horn and wipers. Bring proof that this vehicle is insured.
You are able to retake the written and road tests. In order to be prepared,
you should know the rules of the road. The Minnesota Driver’s Manual has all
the information on how to follow the laws and drive safely. You can get a
copy at the DMV or read it online.

Applying for a Driver’s Permit (SPb:Beg.)
1)
Students must bring necessary ID.
Teacher should discuss the Primary and Secondary IDs needed to
apply for a permit.
https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/formsdocuments/Documents/IdentificationRequirements_English.pdf
https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/formsdocuments/Documents/Certificate_of_Translation_Form.pdf
Ask students which of these IDs they have. Create fake IDs for this
activity. Fake ID examples are included at the end of this activity.
(Asking students to bring in their Social Security Cards for an activity is
probably not a good idea.)
2) Students must pass the vision test.
http://www.preventblindness.org/distance-vision-test-adults
 Go to this website. Click on What you will need, Note about
printers, Instructions and What the results mean.
 You will need to print out either one chart for the whole class, or
one chart for each pair. Instead of using cups to cover their eyes,
students could just cover each eye with their hand.
 The students will need to stand at a measured distance from the
eye chart.
 It should be explained to students that this is not an official eye
exam. Results may not be very accurate.
 Explain that if students do not pass the real eye exam at the
Department of Motor vehicles, they will need to have their eyes
examined by a doctor. The DMV will give them a form for their eye
doctor to fill out.
