Learning Through Ranking
Essential Conditions to Effectively Leverage ICT for Learning
•
Review the Essentials Worksheet and indicate your school’s level of
progress and note specifics as it relates to your rating.
•
Share and discuss how you rated your schools progress in each of
these areas.
•
Some Questions to consider:
– What “essential conditions” do you view as the most critical to address for
your school to best leverage ICT to support teaching and learning in your
school?
– What “essential conditions” do you think you are doing “best”?
– What “essential conditions” do you think you need to address “first”?
– How would use or modify these essential conditions to support your work

Module 3 | Activity 1
Understanding and Comparing Web 2.0
Web 2.0 presents a shift from the “read-only” version of
the web to a “read-write” version. Web 2.0 means users
can participate, manipulate, and contribute to Web content,
often without using specialised software beyond their
browsers.
Wikipedia offers a detailed definition of Web 2.0 at

Module 3 | Activity 1
Step 1: Exploring Web 2.0 Tools
In this next activity you will explore blogs, wikis, and
collaborative web sites.
Blogs: Allow individuals to share information and opinions with
readers and to solicit feedback and discussion.
Wikis: Collaborative Web sites that can be set up to be edited
by anyone or only designated users.
Collaborative websites: Allow individuals to create or upload
documents to the Web where they can be edited by anyone you
invite.

Step 2: Comparing Web 2.0 Tools
•
What Web 2.0 applications do you currently use?
• What Web 2.0 applications are currently used by
teachers in your schools?
• What applications are currently supported?
• What are not allowed?
• Take the next few minutes and explore some of the
applications listed on the handout provided. (Web

Web 2.0 Tools in Schools
• What Web 2.0 tools are being used by your
teachers?
• What Web 2.0 tools do you use?
• How could these Web 2.0 tools support teaching
and learning in your school?
• Blogs
• Wikis
• Collaborative sites
• What are the issues that leaders need to consider
when tools like this are used?

Module 3 Summary
Key Points:
• Blogs, wikis, and online collaborative documents allow students and
teachers to collaborate on projects by sharing and responding to each
other’s work online
• Web 2.0 tools allow students, educators, and community members to
participate and contribute online without the need of specialised
software or coding skills
• Administrators use simple content publication tools, like blogs, to
disseminate information online to teachers, students, and other
community members
• Web 2.0 tools are often easy to use, and they extend the reach of
communication

Leadership
School leaders are key actors in re-imagining schools for a
Digital future. They have to recognise that their students are a
resource to be unleashed; that they have the knowledge, skills
and understanding to contribute to and develop their own
learning experience. This approach to teaching can be scaled
up to reframe the role that young people play in the whole
school system. Leaders need to think innovatively about the
resources already within their school and how to mobilise them
all to make maximum impact from invigorating ICT lessons, to
embedding technologies across the curriculum. This is about
focusing on small levers with the potential to create big
change.
