with Technology
Course Handbook for Postgraduate
Students and Researchers 2013
Welcome to the Teaching and Learning with Technology online
professional development course, which is available to all
postgraduate students and researchers in University College Cork.
This course aims to introduce staff to some aspects of the pedagogy and
technology that can be used to enhance student learning.
This is an entirely online course, using materials provided by the online
education company Epigeum, which you undertake at your own pace.
The course will be available until 31 May 2013. There is no formal
assessment, certificate of participation or formal accreditation for
this course.
This handbook will provide you with a quick guide to accessing the
course materials through the UCC Blackboard Learn virtual learning
environment (VLE).

Enrolling on the Teaching and Learning with Technology
course
This online course is available on a self-enrol basis. UCC postgraduate
students and researchers are invited to log a request with Ionad Bairre
for enrolment. You should have access to the course within 24 hours of
the request being received. Ionad Bairre will notify you of any delays
should they occur.
1. If you are a registered postgraduate student your Username for
Blackboard Learn is your UCC student identification number and
your password is your Portal@UCC password.
2. If you are a researcher, employed by UCC and do not have a
Blackboard Learn username and password please contact the
Learning Technologies Unit at LTU@ucc.ie with your email
address and Staff Number and they will set up your Blackboard
account.
3. Send an Email with Teaching and Learning with Technology in
the subject line to ionadbairre@ucc.ie including your
department/school/unit, contact phone number and UCC
Blackboard Learn username.
4. Within 24 hours of contacting ionadbairre@ucc.ie requesting
enrolment on the Teaching and Learning with Technology, you will
receive an email confirming your participation on the course.

Accessing the resources through UCC Blackboard Learn
This online course is only available through UCC Blackboard Learn.
1. Make sure that you are using a recent version of your web browser
(Internet Explorer, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome)
2. Also check to ensure that Adobe Flash and Java RE are up to date
3. Go to http://blackboard.ucc.ie
4. Login using your Username and Password
5. Select the Course UCC-TLWT: Teaching and Learning with
Technology
6. The Course Documents section of Teaching and Learning with
Technology will open by default
7. The Announcement section will provide updates on technology
enhanced learning (TEL) events, seminars and workshops that will
take place in 2012-13 Academic Year
8. Course Information contains a copy of this course handbook
9. Web Links contains links to some interesting TEL resources and
will include a more diverse range of material during the course

Achieving Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes of the Teaching and Learning with Technology
courses are listed by the course author Epigeum as follows:
1. Introduction to Learning Technologies
 explain how technology can transform teaching practices
 consider how some common technology enhanced teaching
and learning practices operate in context
 describe a range of common uses of technologies in
teaching in terms of what can be done with them.
2. The Effective Use of VLEs
 describe the main features and uses of virtual learning
environments in higher education
 make effective use of selected features of the VLE when
preparing a course
 explain how your use of the VLE meets your learners' needs
 gather feedback from learners to inform an evaluation of your
own VLE use.
3. Internet Collaborative Tools
 describe the capabilities of a number of Internet-based
collaboration tools (IBCTs)
 integrate IBCTs into your teaching and learning
 discuss the relationship between the affordances of IBCTs
and a set of generic learning outcomes.

4. Course Planning
 discuss the importance of fully embedded learning
technology in course design
 understand a framework that synthesises different learning
theories and discuss how technology can help to support
different forms of learning
 report the benefits of a business model to education
 describe the diversity of experiences that learners bring to
each course
 state the value of defining clear learning intentions and
recognise the importance of different kinds of learning
outcomes
 discuss the advantages of several different pedagogical
planning tools and evaluate the pros and cons of alternative
learning designs
 demonstrate a commitment to developing constructively
aligned courses that strive to find the appropriate blend of
pedagogy and technology for your students
5. Developing Course Content
 describe what digital learning resources are and explain the
role they play in the design and development of the online
educational experience
 identify and select digital resources to support teaching and
learning from the range and diversity available
 compare the benefits and drawbacks of generating your own
teaching resources or using existing ones

 explain how educators around the world use and re-use
digital resources
 discuss some of the issues, challenges and opportunities
associated with the use of digital resources, including
technical and copyright issues.
6. e-Assessment
 explain the relationship between learning and assessment
 design diagnostic, formative and summative e-assessment
tasks
 design interactive e-assessment tasks
 reflect on the appropriate uses for e-assessments
 reflect on the methods others have used to mitigate some of
the risks that arise from using computers for high stakes
assessment
 suggest ways to assess online communication, collaboration
and group work
 suggest ways to assess learner activities in virtual worlds,
role plays, simulations and games.
7. Teaching and Learning Technologies
 articulate your reasons for selecting specific technologies for
use with a particular group of students
 use conventional and digital teaching methods in ways
appropriate for your students
 use models of online tutoring to help you prepare learning
activities
 describe the range of roles expected of an online tutor

about your experience of the course and your implementation of
technology enhanced learning in your own teaching.
These questionnaires will be moderated by Ionad Bairre staff members,
will be entirely confidential and participation will be optional.
Ionad Bairre staff will be undertaking these surveys to gather additional
information on the technology enhanced learning needs of UCC staff.
