The definition of adolescent literature and language arts
The teacher uses a selected literature which is suitable for young adults with specific
emphasis of learning the appreciation of plays, songs, scripts or poems. Integrated skills
including reading, speaking, listening and writing can be taught through the different
genres. Also, it is aimed at show a way to the students to learn with fun and how to learn
effectively without textbook. All of these is aiming at induce the motivation of students to
learn by themselves eventually.
The reason of choosing the film Lion King and using it as the based theme
The reason why I choose this film is because it is the most favourite cartoons of mine.
When I first saw this film, I was already very impressed and being a big fan of it. When
VCD was released, I watched it over and over again and I think would not get bored.
Every time I watch it, I can discover new things and new message from it. Also, the songs
in the film is very beautiful and meaning. Therefore, I think that the film which I
appreciated and familiar very much can help the my teaching.
Also, the message behind the Lion King is very meaningful. It state that the
relationship connected to everyone is very close, so we must consider and care for the
others. In addition, it shows wrong example of the main character Simba that he ran away
from the reality. Finally he got to face it and be brave. This can help the students to have
positive attitude in facing problem and their lives.
Making the lessons more related and relevant to each others. As I want the lesson to be
more close to each other, I choose different genres based on the same film. I want to the
students to be more comprehensive when viewing a film. Hoping that they can get to
know viewing at a film can be academic and fruitful, rather than only get entertainment
and get nothing in the end.
The reason of choosing the genres (Movie & scripts, Songs, Lyrics & drama)
As I have mentioned, I intend to make the lessons more related to each others. I believe
that the students will be more convenience in learning if they are guided in a systematic
and in a sequence way. The student will not be easily to get lost in the process of learning
if they are guided in doing things step by step. Therefore, I make my lessons like a
staircase, each step they make will be connected to the next things they do.
The rationale and characteristics of my lesson plans
The teaching package is mostly aimed at practicing the listening and speaking
skills of the students. The most important at all, is to enhance their confidence in
using English. “The students will be easily lost their attention through long time of
listening to the teacher” (Rudolf Dreikeik, 2000) Basing of this belief, there are lots of
activities for the students to do on their own by individual work and group work. As what
the learner did was what they have learnt, they will participate in lots of group discussion,
class presentation and drama performances. I let the students to explore by themselves in
major part of the lesson. In the other hand, they are encouraged to learn from each other
and learn how to negotiate opinions within the groups. What they actually do will affect
the teacher’s step. It can make them be included in the classroom and make them think
that they are also the one who can have a control in the classroom.
There will be a clear stating of stages in the lesson. The teacher will inform the
students what exactly they will do in the different stage of the lesson and also show how
the things being taught are connected to their learning and everyday lives. Letting them
know the stages can help the students to have a clear picture in their mind so that they are
not easily to get lost in the lesson. Also, “if the students are told clearly how these
activities relates to the syllabus they will feel much more committed to taking part in it.”
(McRae J., 1985) Therefore, the teacher will emphasize and explain the importance of the
knowledge so as to increase the attention from the class.
In the round up session, the peer comments will be part of the assessments of the 3
lessons. I have designed a rubric for the students to comment on the others performances
in drama at the last lessons. I aim at showing the relationship of the class and teach them
how to respect others’ work. Also, the round up session at the end of lesson 3 will echo
back to the first lesson, state clearly lesson and message brought by the film Lion King
and remind them what they should explore in addition of getting enjoyment of the film.
