Short Story Project

~ Ms. Magnusson’s Grade 9 ELA

We have looked at five short stories:

Now the fun really begins. Let’s get into the project! You have a number of options for this project. Your choices are listed below. Pick what you like, mix and match, but you must do

The Choices

8 Frame Movie Outline (10 marks)

On a strip of paper with 8 movie frames, depict one of the stories, identifying the most important eight scenes. This is to be done by hand and in colour.

Song Performance (20 marks)

Write and perform a song dedicated to a character in one of the short stories. The song should show insight of the character and his/her situation in the story. This may be done as a group.

Story Performances (30 marks for full story with script)

As a group of no more than four, you may perform a scene or an entire story. If you decide to do the whole story for 40 marks, you must also write a script, to be handed-in. Your choices are as follows: a) Play (re-enactment). b) Puppet show. c) Radio play. d) Video.

Letter (15 marks)

Write a letter from one character to another. The letter should show insight of the characters and their situation in the story. If reading aloud, the performance should demonstrate the sending character’s qualities. Students opting for the 20 marks must also hand-in the written letter. You may choose from the following: a) Donna to Anna after their 5 year High School reunion. b) Patrick’s break-up letter to Mary. c) The insane man’s confession from prison. d) Any other ideas? Have it approved before you begin.

Alternate Ending/Alternate Version (30 marks)

Write an alternate ending/alternate version for any of the stories. Your writing must be consistent with that of the story. The ending or new version must be of a reasonable length.

Students opting to read their ending/version aloud must also hand-in a typed or written copy.

Movie Theatre Poster (15 marks)

Create a movie theatre-style poster promoting one of the short stories.

Build a diorama (30 marks)

Build a detailed diorama based on any of the short stories.

Build a mobile (30 marks)

Build a mobile containing each character and a variety of symbols found in/of the story.

Read a Sherlock graphic novel (15 marks)

Read another of Sherlock’s adventures in the form of a graphic novel. Write a plot summary including how Holmes solved the crime.

Create a T-Shirt (15 marks)

Design and print a t-shirt related to the story.

Artifact (15 marks)

Re-create an artifact or piece of evidence from the case/story. Add an evidence tag. Place in a bag.

Fashionista “Look Book” (15 marks)

Design a “look book” for two characters. Detail what they wear, how they wear their hair, if they wear make up. Provide fabric samples and pictures of possible outfits.
