Lesson # 1 Title: Introduction to Cherokee Culture/Early Settlers Culture Duration: 3 days Learning Goals Based on Standards: Essential Questions: S.8.1.1 2007 The American Revolution and Founding of the United States of America: 1754 to 1801. Identify major Native American Indian groups of eastern North America and describe early conflict and cooperation with European settlers and the influence the two cultures had on each other. Example: Mohawk, Iroquois, Huron and Ottawa; French and Native American Indian alliances; French and Indian War; British alliances with Native American Indians; settler encroachment on Native American Indian lands; and Native American Indian participation in the Revolutionary War To what extent did the impact of these two groups have on people, history and geography? How did perspectives of Native Americans and European settlers influence cooperation, conflict, and interdependence? How are events and people connected to each other? Students will Know: What the word culture means. Describe different aspect of culture. The geographic area and features where the Cherokee people live. Students will Understand: The similarities and differences between the Cherokee culture and the culture of early setters coming across the Appalachian mountains Students will Do: Watch film clips of the Cherokee Principle People and the The Over Mountain People Journal Entries over film clips Map activity Exit Tickets Assessment: How will students Journal entries and exit tickets demonstrate the desired understandings? (Performance tasks, quizzes, tests, journals, homework, observations, etc.) How will understanding be judged? Instructional Activities/Sequence: Day 1- Discuss what culture is and what makes up someones culture then watch the film clip the Cherokee-Principle People Journal entry about what was presented in the film clip and students write what they think and feel. Day 2- Students complete a map activity of where the Cherokee lived and where settlers were moving too. watch film clip of The Over Mountain People Journal entry about what was presented in the film clip and students write what they think and feel.
