Wallpaper formula:
Perimeter X 8 (height) / total sq. ft. per double roll (round up to even number) X price per
double roll = total cost
1. Calculate the perimeter (in feet) of the area to be covered (add length of all walls).
2. Multiply X height (8 feet)=total square footage to be covered.
3. Divide by total sq. feet per double roll
Note: Look in back of wallpaper book for total sq. ft. per double roll (may need to multiple
single roll X 2).
Note: wallpaper can only be bought in double roll. Round up to an even number.
4. Multiply X price per double roll
Note: Look in back of wallpaper book for price per single roll. Multiply X 2.
5. Compute as shown in formula.
Wallpaper border:
Perimeter / 3 (feet) / 5 (yards)(round up to whole number) X price per roll = total cost
1. Calculate the perimeter (in feet) of the area to be covered (add length of all walls).
2. Divide by 3 = number of yards.
Note: borders are sold in yards only.
3. Divide by 5 (number of yards in a single roll).
Note: round up to whole number.
4. Multiply X cost per single roll.
Note: Look in back of wallpaper book for price per single roll.
Chair rail borders are usually 3 ft. from floor with 5 feet above rail. Calculate same as
wallpaper border. Use wallpaper formula for top and bottom areas using the appropriate number
instead of height.
Carpeting formula:
Length X width / 9 (round up) X $22.00 (cost per square yard) = total cost
1. Length X width (in feet) for the areas to be covered = area in square feet.
2. Divide area by 9 (9 square feet in a yard) = total square yards (round up to nearest
whole number.
Note: carpeting in purchased in square yards.
3. Multiply by $22.00 (or price from ad) = cost for total area.
4. Compute as shown in formula.
Paint Formula:
Perimeter X 8 (height) / 400 X 2 (need 2 coats) (round up to whole number) X $25.00
(cost per gallon) = total cost
1. Calculate the perimeter (in feet) of the area to be covered (add length of all walls).
2. Multiply X height (8 feet)=total sq. ft. to be covered.
3. Divide by 400 sq. ft.
Note: 1 gallon of paint covers about 400 square feet.
4. Multiply X 2 (2 coats of paint needed).
Note: round up because paint is usually bought in whole gallons.
5. Multiply X $25.00 (average cost per gallon) = cost for total area.
6. Compute as shown in formula.
