College Information Night Monday, September 9th @ 6pm
All juniors, seniors and parents are invited to attend College Information Night which will be held
Monday, September 9th at 6:00pm in the cafeteria. Guest speakers include Daviess Community Hospital,
University of Southern Indiana, and Vincennes University. In addition to our guest speakers, Mrs. Sward
will share important information about the college application process, scholarships & financial aid,
SAT/ACT testing, and taking college visits. If you are considering college after high school, please plan to
attend with your parents. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Sward at 486-3265 ext. 227 or

Campus Visit to USI Wednesday, October 2nd
On Wednesday, October 2nd we will be taking all seniors on a campus visit to the University of Southern
Indiana. Seniors will have the opportunity to tour campus, tour campus housing, meet with an
admissions representative, and eat lunch in the dining center. We will leave at approximately 8:10 and
return by 3:10 for dismissal. Students will need to wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the
weather, and bring $10.00 for their lunch. If you have any questions, please contact me at 486-3265 ext.

*College rep visits are a great way to learn what programs, services, and scholarships a college has to offer.

New College Completion Requirements for state financial aid awards: Students first entering
college in the 2013-2014 academic year will be required to meet certain completion
requirements to renew state financial aid awards in 2014-2015. Students receiving the Higher
Education Award, the Freedom of Choice Award, or the 21st Century Scholars Award must
complete at least 30 credit hours during their first year of college to remain eligible for the
maximum financial aid award. A student who completes at least 24 credit hours during his/her
first year will remain eligible for financial aid, but will receive an amount that is less than a
student who completes 30 credit hours. More information about these requirements is available

College GO! Week will be celebrated September 23-27th. This week is designed to encourage
students to make college and career plans. In honor of College GO! Week, some colleges waive
their application fees during this week. (i.e. Hanover College, Indiana State University, VU, and

Students who take the College Completion Challenge at www.collegegoweekindiana.org can
enter to win $529 in a college savings plan and special prizes from the Indianapolis Colts.

Free virtual college tour: Learn More Indiana is partnering with the leading college
search/college admissions site CollegeWeekLive to host the first-ever Indiana College Visit Day
during 2013 College GO! Week. This FREE virtual event which will be held on Thursday,
September 26th from 1-5pm will allow high school students to connect and chat with private and
public Indiana College Admissions representatives and current college students from across the
state. Participating is easy – sign up at www.CollegeWeekLive.com; On September 26th between
1:00-5:00pm login to CollegeWeekLive and browse Indiana colleges and universities while
chatting live with admissions staff and students.

Indiana e-Transcript: the state’s e-Transcript service provides a convenient and secure option for
sending high school transcripts to colleges electronically, a preferred method of many colleges.
To register or request your transcript be sent to the Indiana college of your choice, visit
www.parchment.com or click on the e-transcript link on the Barr-Reeve Guidance Webpage.

Indiana’s 8th District will be hosting an Academy Day for all high school students interested in
learning more about attending a service academy. The event will be take place on Saturday,
September 21, 2013 from 8:30-11:00 A.M. CENTRAL TIME at the Vincennes University, Gibson
Center in Fort Branch, IN. Please RSVP to the Evansville office by September 18 th at 812-4656484.

Purdue Extension is offering a FREE three week series of parenting classes called ‘Parent’s Night
Out’ on Mondays from 6:30-8:30pm at Washington Catholic Library. Classes begin September


Vincennes University will be waiving its application fee for students who apply during the entire
month of September! Visit www.vinu.edu/apply today!

VU will give gas cards for families who visit campus & buy your lunch!

VU now offers Pre-dental hygiene, Pre-vet tech, and 4-year Agribusiness degree. Check out these
new programs at www.vinu.edu.

IU now requires a brief personal statement, limit of 300 words, as part of the application process.
This will be an opportunity for a student to share information about his/her background and
experiences that may not be available from the application or supporting documents and share
any special circumstances related to his/her academic performance.

The Biotechnology B.S. Degree program at IU prepares students for careers in the cutting edge
and dynamic field of biotechnology. In Indiana, jobs in the biotech sector have increased by 14%
from 2001-2010. Advances in biotechnology have improved disease treatment and diagnostics,
increased crop yields and sustainability, and provided alternatives to conventional fuels.
Employment opportunities include: pharmaceutical research, crop improvement, forensic
sciences, biofuel research, and drug manufacturing. Check out

Indiana State University will waive their $25 application fee during the entire month of
September in honor of College GO! Week. www.indstate.edu

The University of Indianapolis has sent applications for seniors as well as some additional
information that may be beneficial. Students can avoid a $25 paper application fee by applying
online at unidy.edu/apply.

Indiana University will only be considering official SAT/ACT test scores sent directly from the
testing agencies for admission and merit scholarship consideration. These test scores must be
submitted by November 1 for students to be considered for Automatic Academic and most
Selective Scholarships or Scholar Programs.

Students who are completing Indiana’s Core 40 Diploma with Academic Honors are admissible to
IUPUI regardless of cumulative GPA or test score.

Beginning with students applying for fall 2012, Vincennes University will require every applicant
to have a high school diploma earned via passage of a graduate qualifying exam (GQE), or to have
a general educational development (GED) diploma. This means that students who have a high
school diploma earned through a GQE waiver will need to complete certain steps to be
considered for admissions. For these steps please contact VU Admissions at 1-800-742-9198.

Students planning to apply to Purdue must have their SAT/ACT test scores are sent directly from
the testing agency. Purdue will not accept SAT/ACT test scores listed on the high school
transcript as official scores. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Sward.


College Preview Days/Open Houses
*Students are allowed two days of college visitations during their senior year and one day during the junior year. It is the
responsibility of the student/parent to set up an individual college visit. To do so, you should contact the Admissions Office at
the particular university at least 2 weeks prior to the date you would like to visit. Students must have proper paperwork (2
forms) on file in the guidance office for the absence to be excused and not count as an absence.
University of Indianapolis Krannert School of Physical Therapy and the School of Occupational Therapy
are hosting an Open House Saturday, September 14th 9:00am-12:00pm. Learn more about UIndy’s

Ball State University is hosting Preview Days for high school juniors and seniors on Saturday, Oct. 5 th and
Saturday, Nov. 9th. BSU is hosting Preview Days for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors on

The Diesel Equipment Technology Program at Wabash Valley College is hosting Diesel Day on October
16, 2013. The event will start at 8 a.m. and end at about 2:30 p.m. and will include lunch and hands on
opportunities for students. If you are interested, see Mrs. Sward about registration by September 27th.
University of Southern Indiana: USI will be hosting Southern Hospitality Days on numerous dates this
fall and next spring. The dates are: October 19, November 9, November 23, February 15, March 1,

Vincennes University: VU will be hosting PreVU days on October 18, October 19, November 22 or

Indiana University: IU offers Discover IU days Monday through Friday most week days of the year and

Rose-Hulman: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology offers individual visit days throughout the week. To
schedule a visit, it is best to request the date you wish to attend two weeks ahead of time. You can

Indiana State University: ISU has scheduled Sycamore Preview Days for September 21, October 14,
November 11, January 28, February 17, and April 12. To register, call 1-800-GO-TO-ISU or online

University Of Evansville: U of E is hosting IMPACT visit days on October 5th and November 9th. Fall
Friday will be October 25th. If you are interested in attending, register online at

IUPUI invites you to attend “Dental Days” on Saturday, October 5, 2013. Presentations will include
information about careers as dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants. Dental Days will be held
at 9:00 AM at the Indiana University School of Dentistry on the IUPUI campus. Individuals must register

21st Century Scholars Information
Graduates of the class of 2014 must have a 2.0 GPA to keep their scholarship award, file a FAFSA by the
March 10th deadline and turn in a completed affirmation form by the March 10 th deadline. 2014
graduates will have to complete the 30/60/90 rule in college in order to keep their scholarship for four
years. This means completing 30 hours of college credit (cannot include remedial work) by the end of
the freshman year; 60 hours by the end of the sophomore year and so on.
Graduates of the class of 2015 (Juniors) must have a 2.5 GPA to keep their scholarship and will be held
to the 30/60/90 rule in college as well.
