Below are the guidelines for the annotated bibliography:
1. At least three (3) of your sources must be primary sources (journals, proceedings, papers,
dissertations, and books) and up to two (2) of your sources can be secondary sources
(information from respectable web-sites, institutions, experts, authors, magazines, and
newspapers).
2. Details explaining how to prepare annotated bibliographies (including examples) can be
found at:
http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/skill28.htm
3. Guidelines for distinguishing scholarly journals (primary sources) from other periodicals
can be found at:
http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/skill20.html
4. Tips for critically analyzing information sources can be found at:
http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/skill26.htm
5. The citation part of each annotation should be in APA format
http://www.hawaii.edu/emailref/instruction/guides/apastyle.pdf
6. All of you should be somewhat familiar with the APA format or possess the APA Manual
of Style. If not, this is a good time to start! Hopefully, at least one person in each group
can assist with the formatting of citations. You do not all have to be experts, but begin to
understand the importance of adhering to the APA format as it will be required for your
Masters' projects.
7. Please use the criteria listed below to assess your Annotated Bibliography assignment.
We will apply the same criteria in scoring them.
Note: scholarly annotations should be more comprehensive (about 150 words or so) than typical
short blurbs or web site descriptions. In addition, annotations should be descriptive (we need to
know what was studied and how the authors arrived at their conclusions, not just the conclusions
themselves) and evaluative (we need to know how appropriate and well-designed the study was).
