Rep Council Meeting 5/2/06 All members of Cabinet present Cabinet nominee speeches: Corresponding Secretary: Jennie Huling: I'm Jennie Huling '08 and I want to be your Corresponding Secretary. I view the position as I view my job at Peachtown Elementary. I don't think there is anything more challenging or rewarding than working with children. Often, things get messy, sticky, and frustrating; and some jobs you must perform (like figuring out a listserve) can be arduous. However, there is nothing better than knowing all the hours you've put in will really make a difference in the lives of students. I have experience, drive, and most of all I want to work for the students of Wells once again. I know my qualifications, and those of the job, and I know we are a perfect fit. I'm trusted with kids, and I've proven I can be trusted with Cabinet; all I need is another year to work for you all. Belen Plasencia: My name is Belen Plasencia, I am a proud member of the Class of 2008, and I am nominating myself for the position of Collegiate Corresponding Secretary for the 2006-2007 academic year.Last year I ran for the same position not entirely sure of what to expect, but one thing for certain is that from my experience as a cabinet member I have learned that we are elected to represent the voice of the student body. Not many students are aware of what the responsibilities/duties of the corresponding secretary entail. My main goal for next year is to make my role as a student representative more visible and more accessible to the Wells Community. I have seen Collegiate Cabinet prove their potential many times over these past two years. As a member of student government, I will work with our officers to ensure that we make our mark not only on the school, but also to the entire community at large. I truly see a bright future for Wells College. Recording Secretary: Kate Maple: My name is Kate Maple, and I’m running for Collegiate Recording Secretary for the upcoming 2006-2007 school year. I have spent this past year getting to know the Wells community through various clubs and activities. I have been involved in Q&A, Sex Collective, College Democrats, Oddline, and I volunteer in the WRC library. I currently serve as the secretary and state council representative for the Wells College Democrats; the Finger Lakes Regional Chair for the College Democrats of New York State; as well as the treasurer for Main 2nd and 3rd. The next few years will be very critical in making the transition into the next chapter of Wells History. As recording secretary it is important to maintain open lines of communication between the students, administration, and faculty and staff. Aside from e-mails to the student body, the Collegiate web site will be a vital part of communication. TiPHanie Copeland: Hi my name is Tiphanie Copeland also known as PH. I am running for Recording Secretary. During my senior year of high school, I was student body president and held the position of Liaison to the Minneapolis School Board of Education. Here I my job was to attended School Board meetings as a student representative to serve as a liaison between the school board members of Minneapolis and the students of the district. I learned how to build relationship with important community members. One of my most recent leadership experiences was during January break I spent my time as an Intern for Minnesota’s House of Representatives, Rep. of 61b, Neva Walker. While working there I attended meetings, worked on case studies, held one-on-one’s with other Minnesota Representatives, and organized events, including an event where 80 students from the Citywide Student Government of Minneapolis got to spend a day at the Minnesota State Capital. If you would like to know more about my leadership experiences you can look on the wall in the dinning hall. I feel that I am best fit for the position of Recording Secretary because I am good at taking notes and communicating with very diverse climates. I will work with the computer science department as well as the Corresponding Secretary to put the minutes of the meetings and other important information on the Colligate website as well as send them out through email. I want to be there for YOU, the students of this college. If you have any questions concerns and or comments about where and how our school is leading please contact me. That is why I am here. Remember that I am here to help serve you. Treasurer: Hayley Clark-Braverman: They say that when you give a speech the first two minutes should say why you are here and what you are going to do. Then the next two minutes should be about why you are here and what you are going to do.…and so forth. But since I only have a minute, it might make things a bit more difficult. So I could tell you that I would make a great treasure because I am very organized, reliable and I can manage money well. But all of the candidates running for treasure are these things, otherwise we wouldn’t be running for the position. I'm not running for this position because I just want the status or title, or because I think that it would look great on my resume. I’m running for Collegiate Treasure because I sincerely care about issues at Wells. While being Class President for the past two years I’ve been an integral part of making sure all of the traditions and other class events ran smoothly. Throughout that time I’ve had several ideas about things that could be improved at Wells, as well as maintaining certain aspects. I want to be apart of collegiate to help with these aspects. So Vote For Me, Hayley Clark-Braverman, For Collegiate Treasure and I’ll show you why I’m here and exactly what I am going to do! Dalace Inman: Hi my name is Dalace, and I'm a rising junior. My speech sounds a bit corny but they’re suppose to. I'm running for collegiate treasurer. I have held numerous leadership positions on campus, including treasury experience. I have taken accounting and financial classes for my major, and I actually like them , (at least most of the time). I want to work hard for the student body by helping clubs, organizations and classes get the money they need to have a great year. I want to help keep traditions alive, traditions are very important to Wells and to me. And I want to act as a voice for the students, because students deserve to be heard. Basically I love Wells and I want to make it better. I hope you vote for me, thank you for listening. Alicia Bender: Here are the major points of my talk. 1. 10 year relationship with Wells. Waited for the right opportunity, which is Collegiate Treasurer. This is the way I can best give back to the community that has given so much to me. 2. Everyone's qualified. I ran a store that brought in $40k/week. Main differences that set me apart: A. My leadership style- not telling people where they want to go, but helping them to reach self-determined goals. B. I am not overcommitted. This would be my one extracurricular project, which means that I won't be biased in budgeting and that the organizations will get the attention they deserve. C. Past leadership has shown me that all clubs are trying to do good work, and I will work to find budget solutions that everyone will be happy or at least satisfied with. 3. I would be a servant, not a dictator. I am not asking people to just vote for me, but to allow me to help and serve them. If you are abroad or off campus, you can email Abbie Corwin your ballot for this election.
