APPENDIX E (Rev 2007) Hispanic Studies League CULTURE BOWL The students from a team competing together in the culture bowl event will be referred to as a “squad” in order to distinguish it from the overall team from which the squad comes. Each competing team may enter only one squad in the culture bowl event. Each squad must consist of three students, one of which MUST be Level I. The captain of a squad may change from match to match, but each squad must have a captain competing. If the captain changes during a match because of emergency substitution, the judge must be notified. Native speakers may compete. All rounds will employ the use of buzzers. If a host school does not have a reliable set of buzzers of the type used for academic teams, then the LA will provide a set. However, it is preferable that the host schools provide buzzer sets as the student helpers will be more likely to know how to set them up and use them. The first round will consist of relays with all squads present. Members of each squad are seated one behind the other. Each participant will compete against one participant from each other squad. The judge will ask a set of ten questions, and then the contestants will rotate. The procedure is then repeated until all participants have had the opportunity to answer questions. There will be three sub-rounds in the relay round. After the relay round, the judge will tally the points and determine the seeding for the single elimination bracket tournament that will determine the winner. If there is a tie for a place in the bracket, additional questions will be used to break the tie; however, the extra points are NOT counted toward the squad’s total point count. If the total number of squads equals nine or less, a four-squad bracket will be used. If the total number of squads equals ten or more, an eight-squad bracket will be used. As soon as the pairings are announced, the bracket play will commence. At each level of play, the squads that have yet to play will be sequestered so that they do not hear the questions used. This is because the same questions will be used for each match. Once a squad has completed a match, they are free to leave or stay and watch. At the end of bracket play there will be an automatic tie for third and fifth places. Total points earned, including points earned for the relay round (but not including any points earned from a tie-breaker) will be used as the first tie breaker. The second tie breaker will be a comparison of point differentials in matches played. All matches will be played with buzzer sets. Any player may buzz in at any point during the reading of the question. The judge will stop and allow the question to be answered without finishing the question. The player who buzzed in must answer the question without help from teammates. If the answer is incorrect, the question will rebound to the opposing team. ON REBOUND, ONLY THE CAPTAIN MAY ANSWER, BUT S/HE MAY CONSULT WITH THE REST OF THE TEAM. If the question was read in its entirety before the original buzzer, then it will NOT be repeated. If the buzzer interrupted the reading of the question, then, on rebound, the question will be read before the opposing team is required to answer. A master set of 900 questions will be provided to each sponsor at the time of registration. All questions will be drawn from that list. Teachers, judges and students are encouraged to suggest new questions for the following year. These will be distributed as updates when teams reregister for the new school year. The new questions will be included in the master list for distribution to new teams. Teachers, judges and students are encouraged to review the questions for correctness and clarity. If any questions arise they should be forwarded to the LA. Correction updates, if needed, will be distributed by email to all registered teams. Questions will be used in the following rotation: November- 1-150, December- 151-300, January- 301-450, February- 451-600, March- 601-750, April- 751-900. Questions 1-900 will be in play for the Championships. Each year the order of the questions will be scrambled. While the questions will be basically the same, it will be necessary to use a new list each year. The master list of questions follows. All relevant forms will be found in Appendix G. Hispanic Studies League CULTURE BOWL QUESTIONS Note: This list of questions has resulted from many years of collecting from many different sources. They have been transcribed several times. There are probably many typographical and some factual errors. Please do not hesitate to call such errors to the attention of the League Administrator for correction.
