Senior Spectrum Health Talk
“Medicare 101”
Erika Lawson
GeorgiaCares Coordinator for Senior Medicare
Did you know that if you have Medicare, you are not required to make a co-payment for
a flu shot? GeorgiaCares is administered through the Department of Human Resources
Division of Aging Services and is set-up to protect seniors from Medicare errors, such as
paying for a flu shot when it is covered 100% by Medicare. Join us in September as
Erika Lawson, GeorgiaCares coordinator for senior Medicare, discusses common
Medicare mistakes and how you can protect yourself from errors, fraud and abuse.
This year, the dates for Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) for health and drug
plans have changed to October 15th – December 7th. Each year, beneficiaries are
encouraged to review their current plans to assure that their plan best meets their needs.
Failure to review or take action during the AEP may result in higher out-of-pocket costs
or loss of coverage.
Come prepared with your questions. Ms. Lawson will discuss different Medicare plans
and financial assistance programs to reduce out-of-pocket Medicare costs. She will be
participating in a question and answer session immediately following the presentation.
We look forward to seeing you there!

September 2012
~ Congratulations, Candice! Good luck in nursing school! ~
As many of you already know, Candice Stewart, our Senior Spectrum coordinator, has
been accepted into the fall semester nursing program at Georgia Perimeter College. She
will officially begin her studies on August 20th and it is with great anticipation she begins
her new journey to becoming a registered nurse.
Candice has been a part of the Senior Spectrum family for close to three years now. She
has been instrumental in planning and coordinating so many of our most memorable trips.
It is quite hard to imagine traveling without her!
As Candice begins her new career path, we wish her the very best. Going forward,
Candice has decided to stay on at DeKalb Medical in her current role as the Senior
Spectrum coordinator, but on a part-time basis. We are glad she will still be coordinating
our travels and managing all Senior Spectrum memberships.
Candice will still also handle the day-to-day responsibilities of membership questions,
trip questions and inquiries. The best way to reach her is to leave her a voice mail
message at her office number 404.501.7494. Also, she can be reached at her email:
Candice.stewart@dekalbmedical.org.
As always, the box located on the wall outside of her office in the Wellness Center will
continue to be available to drop off trip registration forms and suggestions. And of
course Leah is right next door in the office right next to Candice’s if you want to stop in
and drop off a comment or a hug! 
Please join all of us in wishing Candice a successful next step towards becoming a nurse!

Senior Spectrum Health Talk
“Alzheimer Disease and Memory Loss”
Marshall Nash, M.D.
DeKalb Medical Neurologist
It is inevitable as we age that we will undoubtedly experience some short-term or longterm memory loss every now and then. For some however, memory impairment may
become more severe, resulting in a progressive dissolution of memory of everyday
functions, people, family and even caring for oneself in the simplest of self care
activities. This destructive disease can tear down a person’s dignity and frustrate their
loved-ones.
While there is no medical knowledge that pinpoints a direct cause of Alzheimer’s disease,
doctors know that the treatment of early-onset dementia can drastically reduce the
progression of the disease. The physicians at DeKalb Medical maintain a constant
commitment to achieving the latest advancements and treatments for the diseases of the
mind.
Join us to hear Marshall Nash, M.D., DeKalb Medical neurologist, discuss the current
methods to combat this condition. He will discuss the latest medications available,
memory exercises, signs and symptoms of dementia and much more. Dr. Nash will take
questions from the audience and will provide a memory screening tool for each
participant, so please come prepared with any concerns you may have.
