A sampling of some of the reviews of wines from Coyote’s Run:
2012 Red Paw Vineyard Pinot Gris
 “Usually when I put the words Coyote's Run and Pinot together I'm talking Noir, not Gris. Every
time I try the Coyote's Pinot Gris I think "nice wine" while owner Jeff Aubry always tells me how
great he thinks it is, and we dis-a-gris, until this year ... this year's offering is something special, it
has character and is inviting: the nose has melon rind and citrus notes while the palate muddies the
water in a good way. There's a bitterness to the finish that helps balance out the citrus rind and
white fruits - thus propelling it to a nice finish in the the summer refresher vein.”
4 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jul13
2012 Vintage 30 Gewurztraminer
 “With Dave Sheppard, winemaker, celebrating 30 years as the man behind many an Ontario bottle
of wine, Coyote's Run decided to honour the accomplishment with a special bottling. This Gewurzt
is going to become a regular feature at Coyote's Run with the sad demise of my perennial favourite
Pinot Blanc. The good news is this is a good wine to initiate the change over: nose of floral, lychee
with a little saltiness and some soapy aspects. Palate is pretty and easy sipping with peachy, floral,
lychee and spicy notes all mingling together and ending with a lovely linger that's not so heavy as
to take over the palate. Seems that Dave has learned a little something about making good
Gewurztraminer in his 30 years. This one's a real show stopper.”
4.5 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jul13
2012 Five Mile Red
 “An interesting blend of Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah ... and while it might sound
peculiar it works. Plenty of raspberry and cherry plus other black fruits and some nice red licorice
notes ... the finish is lengthy and shows vanilla, cedar and strawberry with an element of cocoa. This
is a delicious BBQ red for not a lot of dough.”
4 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jul13
2011 Black Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir
 “Although production of this wine has doubled, due to recent expanded planting finally coming on
line, the Black Paw Pinot is still 1/4 of the Red Paw vineyard's output. This year the Black Paw
demands some serious attention - the nose has got beet, cassis, and earthy along with some hidden
cherry elements ... the palate is dark, brooding and complex with some gritty tannins, earthy
character, black cherry notes and interesting mouth feel. This is no shrinking violet - it's the more
powerful brother to the Red Paw's delicacy ... “
4.5 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jul13
2011 Red Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir
 “I've always liked this juicy Red Paw Pinot, no matter the vintage, this one of the famous pair (with
its Black Paw brother) has always been big on cherry yet delicate and elegant; the 2011 is no
different. The nose is floral with violet notes along with a big whack of cherry. The palate brings
cran-cherry to the for and backs it with violets and a good amount of acid as back-drop. This one is
your quaffable, chill 'em down Pinot.”
4 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jul13
2012 Red Paw Vineyard Chardonnay
 “In a big year like 2012 you'd expect big, blowsy California-style Chardonnay ... but not from the
likes of winemaker Dave Sheppard, who is celebrating his 30th vintage in Niagara ... that length of
time means he knows how to handle his acid and fruit (that and being a child of the 60's might help
too). 100% Hungarian oak for 6-and-a-half months, with no more than 25% new. The nose is peach
pit, spice and with a lovely whiff of butterscotch and vanilla ... sounds sweet? Ah, but no. Toasted
apple and vanilla-spice take charge in the mouth with a toasty-burnt-butter note near the finish.
This wine has elements of California fatness but with that signature cool climate Ontario acidity.”
4.5 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jul13
2011 Cabernet Merlot
 “This classic Niagara red blend starts with ripe cherry fruit and adds raspberry, cassis, spice and
herbs in a balanced approach on the nose. The red fruits on the palate get a boost from earth-spicy
notes to go with good tannins and balancing acidity.”
87 pts., Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun13
2009 Sparkling Pinot Noir Rose
 “…it is made in the traditional method with 2.5 years on lees and that for the inaugural production
they made only 1000 bottles. The nose is raspberry, strawberry and apple aroma-ed, while in the
mouth all three show up right to the mid-palate then it’s green apple and rhubarb to the finish …
it’s definitely drier than the nose let’s on and the initial fruity nature seems to amalgamate a nice
POM juice flavour before the finish kicks in.”
4 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jan13
 “This is Coyote’s first sparkling…and it is a home run! Made in the traditional method, it was aged
30 months on the lees and bottled with a crown cap. It exudes a profile of caramel, brioche/toast,
strawberry, cherry and mushroom. There is excellent length and concentration with a creamy
texture rounding out the experience.”
92 pts., Evan Saviolidis, Tidings.com, Jan13
2011 Red Paw Pinot Gris
 “A bright and expressive nose of apple, melon and fresh fruit salad. It’s lively and fruity on the
palate and clean through the finish.”
88 pts., Rick Vansickle, winealign.com, Oct12
2011 Five Mile White
 “…this wine offers a lovely whiff of floral, spice and sweet fruit aromas. Mid weight, it’s dry, clean
and crisp in texture with citrus and mineral mingling with a touch of sweet orchard fruit on the
palate. Nicely balanced, juicy and a bit pithy on the finish, serve as a sipper or with lemon garlic
roast chicken. “

2010 Rare Vintage Syrah
 “According to owner, Jeff Aubry, Syrah is prone to excessive vigour, and if quality is the end game,
vineyards need to be manicured constantly. In the case of this offering, CR has practiced what they
preach. Mid weight, a combination of spice, pepper, hickory, cassis, raspberry and vanilla are
unleashed on the senses. There is a lengthy aftertaste and enough tannin to allow it to age; my
personal preference would be to drink over the next couple of years to take advantage of the
exuberance. Pair with steak au poivre.”

88 pts., Evan Saviolidis, Tidings.com, Jan13
“This "son-of-a-bitch to grow" according to owner Jeff Aubry, turns into one of their most popular
varietal wines - each and every year. If customers flock to the regular edition then they should come
running for this rare vintage version. The nose is incredibly peppery with both black and white
pepper and cassis being the only fruit note present. The palate is very old world with smoked meat
taking charge, followed by raspberry and white pepper. There is a hint of VA (volatile acidity) on
the nose, which does not translate onto the palate. “
4.0 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Aug12
2010 Rare Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon
 “About as ripe a Cabernet Sauvignon as you will find in Niagara with bold and expressive dark
fruits, spice and plum accents. This shows firm tannic structure on the palate, but it’s balanced by
ripe dark fruits, toasted oak and a variety of complementary spices. This is one you’ll want to cellar
for a few years to let the tannins and acid integrate a bit. Can’t wait? Serve with a big juicy steak.”
91 pts. Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun13
 “This elegant Cab possesses a dark cherry colour and a perfume of cassis, smoke, violets, cocoa and
anise. There is great length and a polished feel to the wine.”
91 pts. Evan Saviolidis, winesavvy.com Dec12
 “One of the smallest production wines made at Coyote's Run, at only 111 cases, but this one will be
hard to put your hands on cause it should fly off the shelf. It is the gem of the 2010 Rare Vintage
wines (of which there are 5). It has enough of everything and then it seems to pile on just to prove it
can: great blackberry, black cherry, black pepper, cocoa, coffee and fine Corinthian leather on the
nose - it's the Chrysler Cordoba of wines complete with Ricardo Montalban purring his way
through the commercial. The palate does not disappoint with dark fruit, pepper, spice, and good
tannin structure that's not exactly silky but not obtrusive either. Nice acid balance to keep the finish
clean. This is a great wine that should be babied in your cellar for the next 2 years, and will drink
well into 2025 ... pray we live to test that theory.“
5.0 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Aug12
 “…really lovely and shows a lot of character. There’s a little rusticity showing right now, and the
acidity is edgy, giving great juiciness to the texture. It’s my kind of red.”

2010 Rare Vintage Meritage
 “This winery only makes the Rare Vintage wines in the finest vintages. This is a very fine wine with
a bold nose of plump, juicy blackberries, currants, black cherry-kirsch, plums and fine oak spices
swirling about. Beautiful fruit concentration on the palate with ripeness but not overly aggressive
tannins. The mélange of fruit is joined by Espresso bean, earth, sweet spices and a touch of minty
herbs. Good energy and verve through the long finish. Drink or cellar this for a few years.”
91 pts. Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun13
 “The biggest production in the 2010 Rare Vintage line-up is this Meritage at 400 cases (the rest are
111). The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot at 23% and Cabernet Franc at only
17%. The nose is front loaded with both red and black fruit notes, but it's hard to pick everything
that's going on here because although it was bottled in June it's still trying to sort itself out. There's
fruit, spice, pepper all waiting to find its place. And that complication follows on the palate as
well… there's plenty of tertiary flavours (leather, smoke, pepper) but their masking the fruit which
seems to be playing a game of peak-a-boo with your palate. This wine is all about potential: hold 2-3
years, drink over the next decade.”
4.5 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Aug12
 “This is still an extremely youthful wine which is still closed. Currently, there is cassis, blueberry,
herbs, tar, violets and spice built on a medium bodied frame. The long finish is dominated by the
tannins right now, so hold until 2014 and then drink until 2020. “
90 pts. Evan Saviolidis, winesavvy.com, Jan13
 “A blend of the estate’s finest barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this wine
offers tantalizing complexity in aromas, as lovely dark fruit mingles with cedar, sweet spice and
herbs. Dry, mid-full weight, it showcases deliciously layered red and black fruits, exotic spice and a
peppery note through the long, dry, full-flavoured finish. Displaying firm tannin, fine acidity and
ripe fruit, it’s structured for cellaring 5-7 years or decant and savour now with rack of lamb or bison
bourguignon.”

2010 Rare Vintage Pinot Noir
 “This wine is a selection of the best barrels from the Red Paw and Black Paw vineyards. A beautiful
Pinot nose of cherry, plum and black raspberry melds with barrel nuances of vanilla, cocoa and
spice. There is medium density, supple tannins, very good length and fresh acid rounding out the
experience. “
89 pts. Evan Saviolidis, winesavvy.com, Jan13
 “Aged 16-18 months in French oak has rounded this wine out on the palate, but had intensified the
nose. Aromas are spiced-raspberry, cherry, cranberry cocktail and white pepper ... but it's really the
spice that take over sniffer-wise. I found it interesting that with such a spiced aromatic the palate
shows a relative softness with spiced-raspberry showing up on the finish is the only hold over from
the nose. otherwise you're looking at brooding red cherry notes with good acidity.”
4.0 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Aug12
 “Produced from 5 barrels of the estate’s finest Pinot Noir, this lovely wine offers rich, spiced fruit
aromas with hints of vanilla, dried herbs and smoke. Dry, satiny in texture and medium bodied, the
palate delivers depth of red cherry/berry fruit, a nuance of smoky spice and a lovely touch of
warmth on the tangy finish. There’s good depth of flavour, fine balance and structure. Purchase for
mid-term cellaring or enjoy with your favourite duck recipe.”
4 Stars, Susan Desjardins, winecurrent.com, Oct12
 “…was vinified out of the five best barrels narrowed down from one specific (828) vineyard block.
Sheppard’s RV Pinot is a Red Paw/Black Paw block party only thrown in a year possessed of the
finest Pinot fruit. In 2010 there is zing cherry, coal, cola, cold stone, fennel, vanilla and a touch
of raw ewe milk cheese. Complex PN.”

2010 Black Paw Pinot Noir
 “Of Coyote’s two single vineyard Pinot Noirs, this has always been my favorite. Having benefited
from the heat of 2010, there is more ripeness and depth than past vintages. Medium to full bodied,
the bouquet of cherries, raspberries, plums, anise, cocoa, flowers and mint lead into a palate best

described as an “iron hand in a velvet glove.” It starts off soft and fruit driven, but then the tannins
show full force on the finale. This is definitely a wine made for duck confit or boeuf bourguignon.”
90 pts. Evan Saviolidis, winesavvy.com Aug12
“With less Black Paw Pinot (1.5 acres total) and lower yield the Black Paw Pinot Noir is usually the
pricier of the two vineyard specific Pinots Coyote's Run makes, and also the more assertive. The
nose has an intensity to it with dark cherry, black raspberry and earthy notes. The palate is like a 4year-old child, a bit grabby for attention, showing robust tannins and intense flavours of earth and
spice with brooding dark fruit. This one's serious about what it's there to do.”
4 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Aug12
“Aged 16 months in French oak, just over 100 cases of this well-structured Pinot were produced—
so get yours soon! A notion of sweet dark fruit, spice and vanilla tantalizes the nose. Silky in texture
and dry, this wine matches flavours of ripe field berries with an earthy quality and a replay of spice
and vanilla on a long, dry finish. Finely wrought, with perceptible tannin, it’s a candidate for
cellaring or a match for beef tenderloin with a wild mushroom sauce.”

2010 Red Paw Pinot Noir
 “This Pinot is more Beaune in style, due to the softer style and red berry fruit qualities: cherries and
raspberries. Add the flowers, cocoa, plums, very good length and supple tannins, and what you
have is a real flatterer of a wine.”
88 pts. Evan Saviolidis, winesavvy.com Aug12
 “There's two reasons I've mostly dug the Red Paw Pinot over the Black Paw from Coyote's Run. 1) I
love the femininity of this wine, and 2) it's cheaper ... but seriously, it's that feminine quality and
character that really gives it it's elegance. Perfumed aromas of violet, floral, sweet raspberry,
cranberry cocktail and gentle spice. The palate is where the femininity shows, caressing the tongue
in a sexy and smooth way, but still maintaining a spiciness of fruit flavour: cranberry, sour cherry
and strawberry. The real kicker is the spiced-berries with white pepper on the long finish ... this
one's quaffably good in an elegant sort of way.”

2010 Pinot Noir
 “Built at a pretty good price for top-quality Pinot in Niagara, this basic-tier version shows the ripe
fruit of the vintage with black cherry, cassis, bramble, roasted Espresso bean, sandalwood and
earth. The fruit is smooth and juicy on the palate with ripe tannins and decent acidity to balance it
all out. Nothing too complicated here yet not simple either; just a good, honest Pinot from a very
good vintage.”

 “This blended Pinot is an LCBO brand for Coyote's Run to be released thru Vintages. It is a blend of
off-site and estate (35%) fruit made as a base-model Pinot for those who think good Pinot can only
be expensive. The nose is full of spiced-cranberry and sour cherry, while the palate has telltale Pinot
notes of earthy, sour cherry and cranberry with good acidity and spice on the finish. This is really

good value in a basic Pinot, it shows real depth and elegance especially for its price point. It should
convert quite a few skeptics in its path.”

“Enticing with wild raspberry, cherry, boysenberry, woodsmoke and a touch of beetroot. Elegant,
medium bodied and very dry. Though there is a marked juiciness to the fruit, the whole thing is
nicely backed by smoky oak. Fleshy tannins give a plush texture and mouthfeel. Nice length.”

“Exotic aromas hint of cola, black cherry, vanilla, spearmint and raspberry. The flavours show
raspberry, cherry, strawberry with a friendly acidity.”
90 pts, Gord Stimmell, Toronto Star, Oct12
2010 Red Paw Merlot
 “The dark cherry colour leads into a cornucopia of plum, raspberry, cherry, vanilla, cinnamon and
cocoa, or, if you will, a textbook nose of Merlot. There is some serious tannic structure lurking
beneath, making for a strong case for a pairing with braised lamb shanks or dry rubbed, slow
smoked ribs.”
89 pts. Evan Saviolidis, winesavvy.com Aug12
 “Another terrific red from the excellent 2010 vintage, and characterized by impressive balance of all
the components.”

 “By now I hope you know Coyote's Run has two types of soil on their property - and on occasion
split grape varieties out to see what the difference would be if each grape from each soil type was
treated the same, but separated. There is no Black Paw Merlot, so don't go looking for it - all these
grapes come from the Red Paw Vineyard. This is a pretty wonderful Merlot from a very good
vintage. The nose lures with a musky perfume, raspberry, black cherry and some blue fruits. The
taste follows what the nose offers in the form of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry with a dry
yet firm finish. It needs a few years to mellow and soften, but then you'll be drinking it for the next
7-9 years ... so buy now, enjoy later.”

2010 Black Paw Cab Franc
 “Here is yet another impressive bottling from Coyote’s 2010 red line-up. Boysenberry, plum, cassis,
vanilla, mocha and roasted herbs are built on a solid backbone of tannins. Combined with excellent
length, it will age well for the next 5 to 7 years.”
90 pts. Evan Saviolidis, winesavvy.com Aug12
 “It's been a staple at Coyote's Run to do it with Pinot Noir and a few times with Cabernet Franc ...
and in 2010 it was once again time for Cab Franc to shine in the Red and Black soil spotlight. The
difference is delicate versus heft. Red Paw has a very pretty nose loaded with cherry, spice, graphite
and smoke ... Black Paw is earth laden with cigar box notes…Black Paw doles out Franc's robust
nature: dark berries, black raspberry and cherry with a smoky, earthy quality that leads to a
graphite and dark fruit finish…”

2010 Pinot Gris/Pinot Blanc
 “A fruity nose of citrus, melon and apple. It’s dry and crisp in the mouth with fresh apple and
citrus zest. Nice little porch sipper.”
87 points, Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Aug11
2010 Red Paw Vineyard Chardonnay
 “The nose shows creamy vanilla, pear, sweet spice, minerals and some tropical notes. It’s more
fruit-forward than Black Paw and shows wonderful balance already.”
90 points, Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun11
 “A bouquet of toast, apple, pineapple, citrus, spice and banana are all present. It is richer in the
mouth than Black Paw, with nutmeg and cream adding complexity. There is very good length
and it is ready to drink now, and over the next 4 years.”
88 points, Evan Saviolidis, evanwinesavvy.com, Aug11
 “For a non-Chardonnay fan I sure do seem to like the Coyote's Run Red Paw offering yearafter-year, that's probably due to the wine not being dominated by wood. Yet again the 2010
delivers what I think Chardonnay drinkers are looking for these days. The nose smells of
butter, caramel, vanilla and peach pit and seems to get its delicacy from a mere whiff of some
floral notes. Aged in 100% Hungarian oak for 8-9 months doesn't seem to overpower the wine
flavour-wise though the vanilla seems more prominent on the palate with a lovely creaminess
at young juncture - fruit is beginning to emerge. I find the Red Paw Chardonnay to be delicate,
delicious and really very sippable.”
4.5 Stars, Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Jul11
2010 Black Paw Vineyard Chardonnay
 “A very complex Chardonnay that shows restraint on the nose with butterscotch, vanilla,
poached pear and touch of citrus zest. On the palate, it’s a bit more robust with notes of
mineral, flint and gorgeously integrated fruit. An elegant and evolving wine that can cellar for
a few years to fully show its true potential.”
92 points, Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun11
 “Medium yellow in colour, this Chardonnay has seen new oak treatment. At first, it is the oak
which appears in the form of toast, vanilla and cream, but then the apple, melon, citrus and
minerals work their way into the mix. Medium body, refined and linear, there is enough
weight to pair with cream based dishes or richer cheeses.”
89 points, Evan Saviolidis, evanwinesavvy.com, Aug11
 “I find the Black Paw Chardonnay to be the deeper, richer version of Chardonnay in the
Coyote's Run Black Paw/Red Paw lexicon, this vintage. This year the colour is deeper and
darker than its Red Paw counterpart as well and the aromas and flavours are spicier with a
weighted creaminess on the palate. This is definitely the more masculine of the two wines and
a better pairing with food such as salmon.”

Silver Medal, Value Award, Intervin 2011
“This sports a fine aroma of apple-pear, cream, grapefruit and vague corn scents - nicely done.
It's mid-weight, vaguely spicy (which is odd for unoaked chardonnay) with a rich smooth,
polished texture and very good concentration. Good sipping chardonnay, or enjoy with roast
pork or breaded veal.”
Very Good, David Lawrason, winerytohome.com, Oct11
“From grapes picked three weeks ahead of any other vintage, it shows perfumed tropical
fruits, peach and citrus in a rich, fruity style. Ripe stone and tropical fruits, minerals, medium
acid, and a slighty creamy texture (partial malo) in the mouth. Is there a better $15 Chard in
Niagara?”
88 points, Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun11
2010 Rare Vintage Pinot Gris
 “Rare Vintage estate wines at Coyote’s Run are only made when the vintage lends itself to
something special, such as this Pinot Gris. It’s barrel fermented in neutral Hungarian oak and
aged for seven months, more for the mouth feel than the spices. It’s finished dry with sweet
Bosc pear, melon and tropical notes on the nose. It’s rich and opulent in the mouth with ripe
fruits, a creamy feel on the palate and a hint of spice on the finish. Very fine wine.”
92 points, Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun11
 “‘Rare Vintage’ is a limited edition wine, only made in top years. One hundred cases were
made of this aromatic beauty. Its medium body serves up huge peach, flowers, honey and
vanilla on the nose and banana, cream, yeast and spice on the palate. There is beautiful length,
fresh acidity and a hint of bitterness, a telltale sign of a great Gris.”
89 points, Evan Saviolidis, evanwinesavvy.com, Aug11
 “Purists of Pinot Gris steer clear, this might be something that is shocking to your ears: Pinot
Gris fermented in oak and then aged the same way for a total of 7 months ... the result is a rich
style of Pinot Gris with a bigger, fuller mouthfeel and spicier character than what you usually
get. Think of a dry yet creamy Pinot Gris with a spicy backbone and you've got yourself a rare
vintage Pinot Gris.”

2009 Estate Cabernet Franc
 “A blend of Red and Black Paw Vineyard fruit with bramble, cherry, wild berry and tobacco
leaf on the nose. It’s a medium weight red with fresh cherry fruit flavours in the mouth to go
with raspberry and herbs and some savoury notes. Plenty of acid zip in this wine.”
86 points, Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Jun11
2009 Red Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir
 “Mid ruby. Very interesting aromas of light Pinot with top quality French oak. Daringly
transparent and tastes almost more like a 12.5% wine - perhaps because it is so dry (as
opposed to sweet). Polished tannins. Really rather sophisticated. Very appetising but I'd serve
it cellar cool. The merest hint of beetroot flavour.”

 “The 2009 Red Paw Vineyard pinot is firmly in the lighter red berry fruit spectrum of flavours,
with notable high-toned cherry and a touch of earthy-funk that’s well within normally
acceptable bounds. Tannins are firm and grippy, bolstered by crisp acids, though the wine is
well-balanced all around. Impressive length.”

“The boys at Coyote’s Run make such good Pinot Noir year in and year out that it’s almost
criminal, but they also have a peculiar feature to their wines that makes them quite unique.
They have two kinds of clay soils on their property, red and black, and they separate the
grapes that grow in each to make separate batches of wine – and believe me when I tell you it
sure does prove that soil does make all the difference. The Red Paw vineyard is the pretty,
floral and red fruited one, delicate and delicious with cranberry, raspberry, strawberry and
beet notes, a real palate pleaser.”

“…the Red Paw shows highly expressive creamy cherry fruit, spice, toasty cedar bits and
some bramble-forest floor notes. Love the cherry pie flavours on the palate with touches of
raspberry fruit, cedar, spice and roasted herbs.”

“This pale pinot has an intense, very spicy, herbal, red currant and slightly meaty nose. It's
light to mid weight, quite tart and firm, with some green tannin and grit. Excellent length
however - this almost electrifying. Not quite the finesse of the Black Paw Pinot, but almost as
engaging.”

2009 Black Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir
 Gold Medal, Intervin 2011
 “This is more closed and tightly wound than the Red Paw Vineyard pinot from Coyote’s Run,
with considerably more structure and grippy tannins. Fruit spans the red and black berry
spectrum, and flavour intensity and depth are impressive. Solidly structured and age worthy
all in all.”
89 points, John Szabo, National Post, Sep11
 “The Black Paw vineyard only yields three tonnes per vintage of Pinot, the berries are smaller,
they ripen before the other Pinot fruit on the estate and they usually have higher brix at
harvest. It’s a gorgeously made wine with savoury cherry and strawberry fruit aromas to go
with lovely spice and oak styling. It has wonderful texture in the mouth with raspberry,
currants, plums, cassis and complex spice and oak. There’s a firmness to this wine and defined
tannins that suggest improvement with time in the cellar.”
92 points, Rick Vansickle, winesinniagara.com, Aug11
 “Year after year Black Paw is among Niagara’s top pinots, and remarkably different from
neighbouring Red Paw. This is a pale, tender pinot with a very fine, complex nose of cranraspberry fruit, gentle hazelnut cream, smoke, cocoa and herbs. Quite mindful of some Prince
Edward County pinots. It's light to mid-weight, light and quite silky but loaded with sour red
currant fruit and herbs on the finish. Excellent length.”

Sheppard and Aubrey identify special barrels that make up the blend. They hit the nail on the
head with this Pinot. A nose of bright black cherry, sweet vanilla spice, toast and persistent,
elegant aromas that are absolutely beautiful. The palate shows ripe cherry and raspberry fruit
with kirsch and bramble notes chiming in. It’s rich, stylish and harmonious in the mouth.
Among the best Pinots tried from the 09 vintage.”

2010 Red Paw Vineyard Pinot Gris
 “You have to be growing up on the wrong side of the soil if you haven’t heard that an Ontario
winery has both red and black soils on their property and are planting their grapes on each to
compare the results. That winery’s name is Coyote’s Run and they are about to do their soil
‘speriment on Pinot Gris. In 2010, so the story goes, the grapes looked more like red grapes
than their typical grey-ish colour and reached ripeness levels of 24 brix. The nose is rich in
peach and green apple with a touch of floral. Taste is apple and peach with hints of lemonlime and good acidity to balance. The black soil fruit is a few years behind but this is a good
benchmark to start with; a very summery wine with a slightly bitter finish that seems to play
off well against the sweet fruit on the mid-palate.”

 “From single vineyard fruit picked on Sept. 3, this Alsatian styled Gris, is finished at 14%
alcohol but doesn’t show it. A tropical fruit salad on the nose with melon, spice and light
perfume notes. It’s finished dry but has a sweet impression from the super-ripe fruit. Such
great mouth feel and depth of flavour in this wonderful Gris from Niagara.”

2010 Pinot Blanc
 “When I visited some wineries in Michigan last year I was really impressed with, of all things,
their Pinot Blancs – same thing happened a few years ago when I was out in British Columbia.
Now there are a few who grow Pinot Blanc in Ontario and it seems like even fewer make
varietal wines from the grape, but I have to tell you that for a winery that doesn’t grow their
own Blanc grapes Coyote’s Run sure has perfected making the wines. They get the grapes
from Vineland Estates and they make the prettiest Blanc going. First there’s the nose that’s full
of floral, apple blossom, mineral notes and hints of melon. The palate has melon (honeydew)
and apple blossom … it’s just an all out pretty wine with great acid balance and a lovely long
finish. Enjoy it this summer with pleasure and with friends.”

“Even though Riesling accounts for 57% of the blend, it is the 20% of Gewürztraminer which

“This is one of the most successful of the wave of new white blends in Niagara. It's very
snappy, crisp yet not austere with a ripe nose of melon, pineapple and a whiff of sulphur. The

“Another Chardonnay that shows that even with barrel fermenting and aging oak can play a
supporting role to enhance the flavour of the wine, instead of stealing the show. When you
put your nose into this glass you'd be hard pressed to find a heavy-handed use of oak, in fact,
it'd be hard to find oak at all, the fruit comes wafting out and lures you into the glass for a sip.
And it's here where the influence of the oak comes in ... there's a mix of both buttery leesy
notes and wood along with just enough fruit to keep you coming back for more - and there's
enough of a mix of both in each subsequent mouthful to make it interesting to the last
delicious drop..”

“Jeff Aubry, owner of Coyote’s Run, described this wine as “what the perfect girlfriend should
smell and taste like”. Good thing for Patti (his wife) they have yet to make Axe Red Paw Pinot
Noir Body Spray – her married life is safe. But this wine will become quite extinct the moment
enough people find out about it. With only 650 cases made it might sound like a lot, but this is
not a wine you buy one bottle at a time, it’s a 4-6 bottle lie a few down type of purchase. First,
when you pour it, you’ll notice its beautiful colour. Then with a sniff you’ll pick up ripe black
cherry, raspberry, rhubarb, a touch earthy and slightly smoky. The taste is ripe and juicy black
and red fruit, earthy and smoky, with firm yet smooth tannins that are velvety across the
tongue. This is a very feminine Pinot, with lot of rounded, smooth curves that feel supple in
the mouth and especially on the tongue, “like licking the skin of a supermodel”. Now that
does sound like the perfect girlfriend, the only thing missing is the high-maintenance factor;
the good news is that Coyote’s Run has taken care of that part for you, tending to her every
need for her 14-month stay in French barrique; now all you have to do it take her out for a
good time once in awhile. This wine is still quite young but it shows so much potential that on
that alone it deserves its 5-star rating.”

orange/tangerine notes on the finish. Excellent to outstanding length.”

steadily from attack to finish, lightening the concentrated flavours, moderating the acidity, and
lifting the texture. Sip it alone or drink it with crème brûlée.”

“Look for expressive aromas and flavours in this classy barrel-fermented Chard. Mixed spice,
pear and apple aromas give way to rich and intense flavours with Granny Smith apple, ripe
lemon citrus and delicious nectarine to the fore. It wraps up clean, refreshing, well balanced
and lip-smacking good.”

“This is a rather funky old world style chardonnay from Coyote's Run's celebrated Black Paw
vineyard, with plenty of mineral and wet hay, bee pollen and caramelized pear aromas. The
palate is fullish, balanced with tight acid and more mineral notes, with pretty impressive
intensity and length. This could use another 2-3 years in the cellar to fully come together, and
should make an impressive experience.”

2007 Pinot Gris
 “This offers a fuller body, creamier texture and more complexity than most wine made from
this varietal; it's more Alsace than Niagara. It showcases the terroir and the wine maker, it's
simply outstanding. Aromas of spring blossoms and tree fruit segue a tropical fruit salad bowl
of flavours with honeyed melon, ripe pineapple and mango predominant. There's also an
element of citrus and spice on the deftly balanced and refreshing finish. This is a natural to be
