Understanding human beings and their interactions and living activities as the
basis of social life. Why are social interactions and social life presupposed as a
context for every conceptual representation; scientific or otherwise? How are
the rules of language and culture structured in social life, in the “languagegame”? How are beliefs, social imagination and social consciousness formed
in social life, in the language and culture systems of human beings. The impact
of language and learning on human consciousness and imagination. Rules of
language and paradigms of thinking and imagining. The meaning of history and
historical changes with changing paradigms.

According to their level of English, students are grouped Elementary, Pre-Intermediate,
and Intermediate. The duration of each level is two semesters. This course marks the
first semester of the level each student was placed. In each level, students are taught
the four skills and use of English.
What is language? Principles of a language, native language, dialect, accent,
spoken and written language. Importance of language to constitute a nation,
description of linguistics, world languages, language as a means and objective.
Structure of Turkish Grammar, word structure, spontaneous dialogues;
semantic description of words, idioms, terms, use of modern Turkish. Spelling
and punctuation rules, text analysis, “Onuncu Yıl Nutku”; writing practice of
“Onuncu yıl Nutku”- Atatürk’s Speech to Turkish on the occasion of 10th
Anniversary of Turkish Republic. Free oral practices / discussion / social
function of language; pre-prepared speeches, narrating styles, defining,
describing, discussion. Pre-prepared speeches, narrating styles, text analysis;

evolution of scientific thinking, ways of gaining knowledge; characteristics of

Building blocks of research (observation, definition of problem, theoretical
framework, hypothesis formulation, sampling, research designs: experimental
versus correlational designs; scaling, experimental and correlational designs,
data collection methods, data analysis and interpretation, research report

beliefs (doxa) and about thinking with a priori forms. The presuppositions of
Cartesianism and Empiricism in contrast to conceptual clarification of the
context, language-game. Exemplifying confusion of physical concepts with

This course is designed to integrate research theory (previously learned in
PSY 202), statistics and computer usage to conduct a research and analyse data.
The logic of measurement; validity, reliability, levels of measurement and units
of analysis; scale development process; application and data collection;
preparation of data sets for analysing data using SPSS software; conducting
univariate analysis (descriptive) in SPSS; bivariate analysis; interpreting data
and report writing.

This course covers most of the major psychiatric diagnoses currently in use and
theories about their probable causes. The history of treatment of the mentally
ill; the terminology of psychopathology; the broad classification system of
DSM-IV; the various causes, symptoms, and treatments of the major mental
disorders, including stress, anxiety, dissociative, somatoform, mood,
personality, substance abuse, eating, sexual, schizophrenia, childhood, aging,
and violence disorders; to the ethical issues involved in diagnosis; the
discussion and the differentiation of the major schools of thought in psychology
and their treatment/therapy approaches to the mental illnesses.

Experimental research methods, in addition non-experimental, descriptive
research techniques. Among the many topics to be discussed are: the goals,
assumptions, and requirements of science; the steps of the scientific method;
ethics, experimental control and research design; sampling and generalization;
hypothesis testing and statistical significance. An introduction to the historical
roots and methods for the scientific study of human behavior with a special
emphasis on proper experimental design and the highly critical evaluation of
experimental results. Moreover, students will learn to evaluate and interpret
their research and to communicate the findings in an effective manner through
oral reports, written papers and poster presentations.

This course surveys the theories and techniques of psychotherapy, including the
psycho-analytic, behavioral, cognitive, and humanistic-existential approaches.
Case studies, role plays, and in-class exercises will illustrate the principles of
therapeutic change. The exercises often are experiential in that they encourage
students to apply their own life experiences to various concepts discussed in
class.
