General Info p3

What are Bellevue College Foundation Scholarships?

With only one application a student can apply for 15 to 40 different named scholarships. Each scholarship has a different intent and set of eligibility criteria.

Who can apply for the scholarships? Any student can apply as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.

What do Foundation Scholarships pay for? All Foundation Scholarships are for use at Bellevue College only and can be applied to tuition, fees and, in some cases, books. These scholarships provide funding for the upcoming academic year - Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. Summer scholarships are not awarded.

How big are the awards? Typically, scholarships pay anywhere from $300 to $2000 per award.

What is the Application Process?

How do I apply? The BC Foundation uses an online scholarship application system. The system is accessible through the Foundation’s website. If you have a disability that makes online application difficult, please contact the Foundation to learn about alternative means for submitting an application.

Faxed and emailed applications will not be accepted.

How long does the process take? From the time applications are made available to the time when the recipient is notified of an award decision is approximately 4 months.

How are students notified about scholarship award decisions? All applicants (both recipients and non-recipients) are notified of award decisions by letter or email. The Foundation will not answer whether or not a student has received a scholarship over the phone.

If I previously received an award can I apply again? Yes! You are eligible to apply again if you already received a scholarship. Be sure to update your essays, financials, and recommendation letters. You will also want to make sure that you have a new FAFSA application on file.

Award Decisions

What is the basis for scholarship award decisions? Are they based on need or GPA? Most Foundation scholarships are need based but have a heavy merit component. Nearly every applicant has great financial need – so need alone is not enough to win a scholarship. Students are rated on their overall application, activities, essay, need and extenuating circumstances. The Scholarship Committee considers the applicant’s unique situation, need, dedication, desire to succeed in a given area, and how their success will be used to help others.

Who decides the final outcome of each scholarship? The Foundation’s Scholarship committee selects the scholarship recipients. The committee is comprised of Foundation Board Members who volunteer their time to evaluate scholarship applications. Membership on the committee changes every year.

General Info p4

What Happens after I Receive a Scholarship Award?

How are scholarships paid out?

Scholarships are distributed directly to the recipient’s BC account and will be applied to tuition, fees, and (in some cases) books. The Foundation cannot write a check to the scholarship recipient. Funds not used by the recipient before the 9th week of each quarter are returned to the Foundation. That money is used to fund future scholarships and allows us to help the greatest number of students.

Can scholarship awards be revised? The amount of the total award is decided solely by the

Foundation’s Scholarship Committee. Awards are split evenly among the quarters covered by the award. For example, a $1500 award provides $500 per quarter. Requests to change the schedule of payments may be submitted by email to the Foundation Business Manager. Requests are reviewed and may or may not be granted depending on the circumstances and the student’s academic standing.

Are there requirements after I receive a scholarship? Scholarship funding requires the recipient to maintain satisfactory academic performance as required for BC Financial Aid, meet any special terms or conditions required in any donor specific scholarship, and adhere to the BC Student Code of Conduct.

Scholarship funding may be immediately discontinued if the recipient fails to meet these requirements.

Application Tips

How do you write a winning essay? You need to make your application stand out. Everyone has a story. Tell us things we will remember. Give us a reason to grant you a scholarship. Change or update your story if you applied previously. As you answer the essay questions, you should:

 Address the question of why the scholarship committee should give you money.

 Discuss how you meet or exceed specific scholarship requirements and qualifications.

 Explain how a scholarship award will make you more successful in the pursuit of your educational and career goals. We consider a scholarship award to be our investment in you.

 Tell us about your aspirations. Talk about what you will do with your education.

If appropriate, address how the activities outside of school (e.g. in community organizations or volunteering) are a part of your overall strategy or how they might fit with your educational goals.

What other tips are there for completing applications?

 Make sure you meet all the eligibility criteria for each scholarship to which you apply.

 Address any extenuating financial circumstances in your application.

 Write your essay in advance, review it, edit, have someone else review, edit again, use spell check and finalize it. Read your essay out loud to yourself. Be sure to address the requirements listed in

each scholarship that interests you.

 To get the best possible recommendation letters contact your professors, former employers, or anyone else writing a recommendation early.

Include all your attachments – applications that are missing attachments will not be reviewed.

Submit your application on time!

Financial Aid

To begin the BC Foundation scholarship process, you must have applied for admissions to Bellevue

College. We also suggest you submit a – Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as many of the Foundation scholarships are based on an applicant’s financial need. Your application for admission along with all financial aid applications (FAFASA and the BC Financial Aid application) are required for the funds listed below and are available beginning every January for the upcoming academic year. It’s important to apply for financial aid as early as possible, as some funds are limited. Complete application procedures are available at http://fa.bellevuecollege.edu/apply

Need-based scholarships require you to submit a FAFASA application. Even if you believe you will not qualify for assistance you should apply. Your FAFSA score is used in the review process. If you fall into

a category of student who cannot apply for FAFSA, please contact the Foundation Office.

Once you have completed the FAFSA process, and based on your eligibility, you will be considered for the following: o Federal Pell Grant Program: A need-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. The amount of the grant depends on the EFC and the number of credits for which the student enrolls. o Federal Stafford Loan Program: A low-interest loan made to students attending college at least part-time. o Need-based Stafford loans are made to students who demonstrate a financial need; interest does not accrue on these loans while the student is enrolled. o The unsubsidized Stafford loan is available to students who do not demonstrate a financial need; interest accrues on the loan from the date of disbursement. o Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program (FSEOG): A FSEOG is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need and who receive Federal Pell grants. Awards are based on fund availability. o Bellevue College Grant: The BC Grant assists students with financial need. Funds are limited. o Washington State Need Grant: This grant provides assistance to undergraduate students with significant financial need who are Washington state residents. Funds are limited. o Work Study Program: The Work Study Program provides an opportunity to earn a portion of your financial aid through part-time employment. Work study jobs are available both on and off campus.

Funds are limited.

TIP

Be sure to apply for financial aid.

Don’t assume you won’t be eligible! p5

BC Dreamers Scholarship Scholarship

The BC Dreamers Scholarship is intended for BC students who are undocumented. An undocumented person is a non-citizen who entered the U. S. without legal immigration status or who stayed after the period he/she was authorized to be here. Through no fault of their own, undocumented students often find the door of higher education closed to them. One of the major barriers for most undocumented students in obtaining an education is finances. There are limited opportunities for these students to find employment and they do not qualify for any federally-funded financial aid, including loans, grants, scholarships, or work-study money. The costs of tuition, books, and fees are prohibitive for undocumented students and their families—these financial constraints can prevent competitive and qualified Bellevue College students from achieving their educational goals and often discourage a prospective undocumented student from applying to Bellevue College. For more information about this scholarship please contact the BC Foundation

Office.
