SALARY: $5,982-$7,303 per month
BENEFITS: Employees in this organizational unit accrue time
off effective the date of hire. After one year of service,
employees will have accrued 120 hours of vacation leave,
95.94 hours of sick leave, 40 hours of administrative leave
after 6 months (per f/y) and will have been compensated for
thirteen (13) holidays.
Retirement is provided by an
integrated plan of California Public Employees' Retirement
System (CalPERS 2% @ 60) and Social Security. The
County pays 100% of employee costs for dental, optical, and
medical coverage in the County-sponsored PPO plan and
also pays 74% of the costs for dependent coverage in the
same plans. In addition, the County provides employee and
dependent life insurance and an Employee Assistance
Program.
DEFINITION:
Under direction, performs a variety of
professional legal services in the District Attorney’s or Public
Defender's office involving the prosecution or defense of
criminal cases; and performs related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: The Criminal Law Attorney
classification has three levels which are assigned at the
department director’s discretion in accordance with budget
provisions, organizational needs, the individual attorney's
expertise and skill, and the experience requirements for the
respective levels. Assignments in the class range from the least
difficult requiring minimal expertise and experience to the
prosecution or defense of the most difficult, complex and
sensitive criminal trial cases requiring highly advanced legal
knowledge, skill and experience. Some assignments may
involve the performance of legal services related to family
support matters, or supervising the activities of a satellite office.
The amount and type of supervision provided to incumbents in
this class ranges from close to minimal depending on each
attorney's level in the class and their degree of proficiency in
the practice of law.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
Essential:

Interviews complainants, victims, witnesses and
clients
Prepares and participates in pleadings, arraignments,
pre-trial agreements, motions, trials, responsive
declarations, detention or asset seizure hearings,
negotiations with opposing counsel and the courts,
and the selection of jurors
Litigates criminal and appropriate civil cases in court
Reviews law, regulations and judicial decisions
Performs legal research
Conducts legal related training for officers
Participates in continuing education

May supervise subordinate staff
QUALIFICATIONS:
NOTE: The required level and scope of the following
knowledge and skills relate to the level of the position as
defined in the class characteristics.
Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of criminal law

Legal research methods, practices and materials

Rules of the courts, policies, procedures, and
precedent decisions

Trial and hearing procedures and rules of evidence

The State Penal, Health and Safety, Vehicle,
Corporation (related to criminal), Welfare and
Institutions, Business and Professions, Evidence and
Family Codes

Current word processing programs (i.e. Windows)
Skill in:

Analyzing and preparing a variety of legal documents
and instruments
Preparing and presenting clear and logical oral and
written statements of fact, law and argument

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from
an accredited law school.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's
license within 30 days of hire. Active membership in the
California State Bar.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mobility and manual dexterity to work in a standard office
environment and use standard office equipment; vision to
read handwritten and printed material and a computer
screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and
by telephone; ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 20
pounds such as files, books or boxes of paper for distances
up to 50 feet.

SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process will consist
of a review of experience, education, knowledge, abilities,
skills, certifications, licenses or other professional
requirements needed to perform the position. A department
head may request the development of an assessment center,
practical skills assessment or other selection procedure to
assist in evaluating candidates for the position.
All
candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the
position will be placed on an eligibility list in alphabetical
order for one year. If an opening occurs, the appointing
authority will request and receive the entire list for
consideration.
NOTE: The screening process can take up to 3 weeks. All

Successful candidates will be fingerprinted and may be
subject to pre-employment drug tests and background check.
