EVENTS/TRENDS/ISSUE

Consider the extracts below as examples of events which have impacted on New Zealand
Society:
Olympic Games
100 years ago, New Zealand sent its first athlete to an Olympic Games. This year, New Zealand
welcomes its 1000th Olympian, rower Hamish Bond.
A member of the Olympic rowing team’s world champion coxless four who finished in the Top 8 in
Beijing 2008, Bond was named at a team function at the New Zealand Olympic village this evening
by New Zealand Olympic secretary general, Barry Maister.
Maister, himself an Olympian, was delighted to make the announcement. “New Zealand has a proud
Olympic history and to celebrate 1000 Olympians is a very special milestone,” he said this evening in
Beijing.
Together with the New Zealand Olympians Club, the NZOC developed a definition of a New Zealand
Olympian - an athlete who has been both selected into the New Zealand Olympic Team and has been
accredited into the team at the Olympic Games. This definition varies slightly from the IOC definition
which includes a requirement to take the field of play.

Auckland Marathon

1. Critically evaluate how particular meanings and values associated with physical
culture and sport are being produced and disseminated globally through mass media
and international sports wear companies.
2. Hussan Bolt shaved significant amounts of time off the world and Olympic 100m
records.
Using your knowledge of programmes’ for performance improvement, critically
evaluate what factors enhance and impede a performance improvement programme.
3. Consider the following scenario:
Top level performance and winning in the 21st Century requires athletes to cheat and
use performance enhancing drugs to maximise performance improvement.
Using your knowledge of programmes’ for performance improvement, critically
evaluate the validity of this statement.
