Section One
Introduction to the Speaking Test of BEC Vantage
I. What's in the BEC Vantage Speaking paper?
The BEC Vantage Speaking test has three parts and you take it together with another candidate.
There are two examiners. One of the examiners conducts the test and the other examiner listens to
what you say and takes notes.
Summary
Time allowed: 14 minutes per pair of candidates
Number of parts: 3
Marks: 25% of total
You have to talk:

Part 1 (Conversation)
What's in Part 1?
Conversation with the examiner. The examiner first asks general and then more
business-related questions. You will have to talk briefly about yourself, your home,
interests and job.
What do I have to practise?
Giving personal information. Talking about present circumstances, past experiences and
future plans, expressing opinions, speculating, etc.
How long do we have to speak?
About 3 minutes.
Part 2 (Mini-presentation)
What's in Part 2?
A 'mini-presentation' on a business theme. The examiner gives you a choice of three
topics (A, B or C). You have 1 minute to prepare to give a speech lasting approximately 1
minute. Listen carefully when your partner speaks as the examiner will ask you a question
about what your partner says.
What do I have to practise?
Making a longer speech on your own. Giving information and expressing and justifying
opinions.
How long do we have to speak?
About 6 minutes.

Part 3 (Discussion)
What's in Part 3?
A discussion with the other candidate on a business-related topic. The examiner gives you
a topic to discuss and you have to talk to the other candidate about the situation and
decide together what to do.
What do I have to practise?
Expressing and justifying opinions, speculating, comparing and contrasting, agreeing and
disagreeing, etc.
How long do we have to speak?
About 5 minutes.
II. What are DOs and DON'Ts?
The DOs and DON’Ts are advice from the Cambridge ESOL examiners about what you should do
(DOs) and what you shouldn’t do (DON’Ts) when you are preparing for or taking the exam. Refer
to them when you are studying so that you know what to do when you take the exam.
DOs









Get plenty of speaking practice in small groups, especially on topics likely to be used in
the exam.
Listen to native (or good) speakers of English doing similar tasks.
Collect and keep records of words and phrases useful for carrying out the exam tasks.
Ask for clarification if you don't understand the instructions/task.
Speak clearly and loudly enough for the examiners to hear you.
Avoid long silences and frequent pauses.
Listen to your partner and respond appropriately.
Be sensitive to turn-taking.
Try to produce an extended sample of language for the examiners to assess.
DON'Ts





Don't rehearse and memorise long answers for Part 1.
Don't try to dominate your partner or interrupt in an abrupt way.
Don't worry about not knowing a word or phrase - explain your way around it.
Don't worry too much about making mistakes - you don't have to be word perfect.
Don't just respond to what has been said - be prepared to initiate discussion and develop
your partner's ideas and contributions.

Section Three
Strategies for Taking Speaking Test
Part One: Interview
I. A DETAILED LOOK AT THE TASK
In the first part of the test, the interlocutor addresses each candidate in turn and asks
general questions. Candidates will not be addressed in strict sequence. This part of the test lasts
about three minutes and during this time, candidates are being tested on their ability to talk about
themselves, to provide personal information on their home, interests and jobs, and to perform
functions such as agreeing and disagreeing, and expressing preferences.
II. STRATEGY
According to what has been discussed above, this part focuses on candidates’ ability to
speak English, not professional knowledge of a certain business field. So before you go to the
speaking test, make sure that you can:
1. Describe what your job or your studies.
2. Talk about your ambitions/hopes for the future.
3.
Say what you like/dislike about your job/studies.
4.
When you go into the interview, speak clearly so you can be heard.
5. Don’t answer the questions with one or two words- answer with one or two sentences.
6.
When you answer a question, give a reason for your answer or an example.

reward for employees for their past performance and will encourage them to continue their efforts
and also give other employees anticipation of promotion for similar efforts. This can improve
morale within the organization.
----(2) It’s a new and modern source of recruitment and is becoming popular.
Undoubtedly, Internet recruiting is of low cost and wide coverage, which can reach a large
audience of possible applicants and is very convenient.
----(3) No. external recruitment will entail more costs for orientation and training.
And it is sometimes difficult to determine whether the organizations’ efforts to locate promising
talents are effective and cost-efficient.
----(4) I prefer the panel interview, because decision made by three to five
interviewers can avoid bias and discrimination and thus be more reliable and acceptable. In
addition, the panel interview can be more efficient by shortening decision time.

----(2) Yes, employers should eliminate tobacco smoke from workplace and create a
smoke-free and healthy office. As we know, smoking is harmful to health and can bring both
smokers and nonsmokers deadly diseases, which will ultimately influence the productivity and
efficiency of employees.
----(3) No. My office is badly-equipped and the simple and old-fashioned equipments
there are of smell of history. For exception of an air-conditioner which often refuses to work, there
is nothing modern. The furniture is out of date, broken and shabby. Besides, the office is small and
cramped.
----(4) Yes. Periodic medical examinations can help detect any health problem to
which an employee’s particular lifestyle or health habits may contribute. Better health not only
benefits the individual, but also pays off for the organization in reduced absenteeism, increased
efficiency, better morale, and other savings.

Candidates need to practice exchanging personal and non-personal information; at Vantage
level it may be possible for candidates to practice talking about themselves in pairs with or
without prompts such as written questions.
When you are being interviewed, remember to:
1. Talk to the interviewer and also, when appropriate, to the other candidate.
2. Try to speak naturally and confidently.
3. Smile and look directly at the person you are speaking to.
4. If you don’t understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat it.
5. If you notice you’ve made a mistake, correct yourself.

Part Two: Mini-Presentation
I. A DETAILED LOOK AT THE TASK
The second part of the test is a “mini-presentation”. In this part, the candidates are given a
choice of topic and about one minute to prepare a piece of extended speech. After each candidate
has spoken their partner will be invited to ask a question about what has been said.
II. STRATEGY
This part mainly focuses on candidates’ ability to give a shor talk. So before you go to the
speaking test, make sure that you can:
1.
Make sure that you cover the points on the card.
2.
Remember to add some of your own ideas.
3. Use words such as because, however and although.
4.
Think of a question to ask the other candidate.
5.
Keep to and complete the talk. Do not talk about other things.



Sample 1
I choose topic A-what is important when selecting applicants for a job. As to this topic, as far
as I am concerned, there are 3 things to consider.
First, I think working experience is very important when selecting applicants. Applicants who
have already had the work experience in the relevant fields will learn the new job easier and
quicker. And it will also save the company a lot of training fees if the applicant has related
experience.
Second, we must consider the personal qualities of the applicants, such as personality and
health. Companies tend to employ people whose character fits a special job. For example,
consulting company tends to employ applicant who is analytical and knowledgeable, but
advertising agents like their employees to be energetic and creative.
Third, I believe language is of great importance when selecting applicants. Nowadays, we do
business with people from all over the world. Always we buy goods from Africa, and sell our
electronic product to Europe; a foreign language especially English is needed if the company
wants to expand to the world. Applicants who can speak one or more foreign languages will have
a better chance to get the job.

As we all know, the criteria used by HR professionals in screening and selecting applicants
normally include such factors as working experience, personal qualities and communicative skills.
Firstly, we pay a lot of attention to working experience of the applicant. A person with a solid
record of related experience is more likely to fit in with a new company. Therefore he or she can
be trusted to fulfill the tasks and solve the problems in a more professional and competent way.
In addition to this, we also look at the personal qualities of the applicant. Does he or she has
integrity, perseverance or ‘can do’ spirit? Surely any organization can benefit from the reliability,
devotion and enthusiam of its employees.
Finally, good communicative skills such as interpersonal skills and team spirit are also
becoming an important precondition in selecting qualified employees.

Finding out about the company
Before you go for an interview, you must make preparations so as to face the interviewer
with more confidence. They include studying the job advertisement, finding out about the
company, preparing yourself psychologically, etc.
Firstly, you should study the job advertisement carefully so that you can match your

knowledge, skills and abilities with the specifications required for the post. You must assure the
interviewer that you have all the qualifications required, so you are the right sort of person they
are looking for.
Secondly, you should know more about the company, such as its profile, structure, existing
problems, requirements, campaigns and future plans. As a Chinese saying goes: “know the
opponent and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat.”
Finally, you should also prepare yourself psychologically and this will help you combat
stress. Rehearsing the interview with your friends, for example, is a good relaxation exercise that
can install confidence in you.

Tips for answering questions
Answer to question 1
There are two main aspects we must take into consideration when judging the objectives of a
specific advertising program. Firstly, we must decide what major category the product belongs to.
Secondly, the current sales situation of the product on the market should be considered.
Answer to question 2
I think the advertisement costs can be controlled by two ways. The first way is to choose the most
economically-efficient media, such as newspaper or radio rather than TV slots, for the former two
will reach the general public at a relatively low cost. The second way is to ensure that the quantity
of advertisement is appropriate, with no space for waste.
Answer to question 3
Since my company’s manufacturing mainly focuses on food products, I believe TV may be the
best media for advertisement. Because TV reaches the most extensive mass and seems to serve a
very strong influence on children and women, who compose the major consumers of our products.

Yes, I quite agree with you. Because the market situation keeps changing almost without stop,
timely adjusting is of key importance leading to a successful launch of an advertising program.
But it never reduces the significance of preparation.

Thank you for your interest in our company. Actually, our company adopted this evaluating
system last year. It has worked very well up till now, providing us with a set of quantified
standards in evaluation, which are much more objective in comparison with previously man-made
criteria.
Answer to question 6
It cannot be denied that advertisement is a very effective way of sales promotion, but I don’t think
it is the only way to do this. Cutting prices, for example, sometimes generates the same result as
advertisement does. And that’s a more direct way, and is money-saving.

Part Three: Discussion
I. A DETAILED LOOK AT THE TASK
The third part of the test is a conversation between the candidates.The examiner gives the
candidates a topic to discuss for about 3 minutes.The examiner will support the conversation if
appropriate and then ask further questions related to the main theme.
II. STRATEGY
This part mainly focuses on candidates’ ability to cooperate with each other, not individual
speaking abilities. So before you go to the speaking test, make sure that you can:
1. You can’t take notes in this part.
2. Make full use of the 30-second preparation time and read the given situation quickly.
3.
Cooperate with your partner and exchange ideas frequently.
4. Don’t always agree with your partner. Try to persuade each other.
5. Do not ignore your partner. If he has a problem, help him continue.

Hi.)。考生可根据自己的英语水平自由选择相应级别报考。

六、证书成绩评定及证书颁发:
考试答题卡由教育部考试中心海外考试处汇集后寄英国剑桥大学考试委员会评卷。评出
成绩后(BEC 初级分 Pass with merit、Pass、N、F 四等;BEC 中级分 A、B、C、N、F 五等;
BEC 高级分 A、B、C、N、F 五等,),打印成绩通知单(包括不及格的 N、F、)和成绩证书,
寄至教育部考试中心后寄发各考点向考生颁发。成绩证书终生有效。
七、报名时间及地点
报名无开始时间,即任何时间都可以报名。有截止时间:上半年报名截止时间为三月十
日;下半年报名截止时间为九月十五日。报名截止时间每年会有几日的变化,以考点公布的
为准。欲了解各考点的具体报名事宜,可与各考点联系。目前 BEC 考试在全国 27 个省、自
治区、直辖市 36 个城市共设有个 57 个考点,每个考点也为报名点。
八、考试时间及地点:
每年五月的第三周六(BEC 高级),第四周六(BEC 初级),六月第一周六(BEC 中级);每
年十一月第四周六(BEC 高级),十二月第一周六(BEC 初级),第二周六(BEC 中级)。上午笔
试,下午口试,口试进度慢的,延至第二日上午。如考试时间有变化,以考点当年公布的为准。
考试地点即报名地点,具体考场由各考点张榜公布。
