1 Introduction
Welcome to the wonderful world of WACI solutions. This document was made to give a comparison of the WACI
NX to other control systems available on the market today, as well as the other peripherals that are typically used
to compliment the system. We did our best to keep the information as accurate as possible, but it is always best
to research your requirements to get the most up to date pricing and specifications. While we could not show
every variation of equipment this should at least provide the questions needed to be asked when looking for a
system solution. This document will be updated from time to time, so check back for the most up to date version
which can be found on the cover page. For the legal minded, all trademarks and copyrights are the property of
their respective owners. Specifications are subject to change without notice. Now that we got that out of the way,
please sit back, take your time, and enjoy the information provided. If you have any questions feel free to call us
or use our online forum www.waciworld.com

What Makes WACI Different and Better?
The WACI technology (Web Access Control Interface) is a high performance embedded control system designed
to be used in many different industries. Education, military, consumer, corporate, industrial, and security can
benefit from the ability of the WACI to adapt to changes. Best of all, there is no need to learn proprietary
languages and pay for licenses because it uses industry standard protocols and languages.
Q. Why does the WACI need so much processing power even though my application is small?
A. In a real world environment there is a small period of time to get the information through the network traffic. It
is not enough to just have a 10/100 connection as that is only a physical connection. What determines how much
information is sent is the throughput. The WACI NX can transmit up to 28Mbps of SSL information. Most IP
based systems are lucky if they can do 6Mbps without SSL. This means in a small period of time the WACI can
deliver a lot of information to reduce delay. It is also not just the throughput but what the control system does with
the information once it has it.
Q. What benefits does a non-proprietary / non-platform specific system give me?
A. The WACI can not only be used on just about any device with a modern web browser but can also be
developed on just about any system. The setup and diagnostics are built in and served up from the WACI, so
there is no need to load software into a computer. Just about any programmer that knows how to develop a web
site can develop code for the WACI.
Q. Can the WACI e-mail notifications?
A. Yes, the WACI can be programmed to notify anyone of any ongoing condition. This also helps to minimize
network traffic as information is only sent when a condition is met.
Q. Does a WACI need a computer connected to operate?
A. No. The WACI is an embedded processor which can operate 100% on its own. Just because the WACI can
serve up web pages does not mean it needs to in order to carry out functions.
Q. Can I update software and firmware remotely?
A. Yes. Not only can it do this remotely via LAN but can update multiple systems at the same time.
Q. Do I need to learn a new proprietary programming language?
A. No. Unlike other control systems, the WACI uses industry standard web languages that can be learned in
most schools. There are also many books available in local book stores. Aurora also has an online forum to
answer questions.
Q. Does WACI have licensing fees or limitations?
A. No. WACI does not have licensing fees like other systems. Believe it or not there are some control system
companies that do not even allow you to modify code or diagnose the system even though you own the
equipment. These companies hide this fact in the software licensing agreement at time of install of the software.
-3-
WACI’s Multi-Room and Asset Management Abilities
The WACI has the ability to decentralize or centralize a facility with multiple units. The program which Aurora
Multimedia supplies free of charge available on our web site is called WACI Distributed. WACI Distributed is a
spreadsheet like program that organizes anywhere from one to thousands of systems across a facility. The
program can monitor the status of just about anything required and schedule events to occur through the year.
Proactive system maintenance can be implemented to remotely e-mail warnings or alarms. This can be used to
manage lamp hours on LCD projectors or even detect theft of equipment if it fails to respond to the WACI when
polled.
WACI Distributed is very different from other programs since it does not need a PC to operate. WACI Distributed
is served up from any one of the WACI control systems on the network. Since a WACI can have its code
modified on the fly, the web page that is served up modifies the code on the specific unit without the end user
ever knowing it. This way if a schedule is made and the PC that modified the schedule is shut down the WACI
will still carry out the last function it was told to do. If a centralized system that relies on a PC to operate fails all
rooms fail. This de-centralization technique allows system redundancy and minimizes network traffic. The WACI
units have the intelligence to monitor the equipment locally. This means it only has to send information if it
changes. This intelligence also allows the WACI to compress the information so that it can send the same
information in less bytes. For example, a typical system will get information specific to a feature so that if power
status is requested it can take 1 or more bytes. The WACI can use the bits of a byte (8 bits to 1 byte) to combine
many functions into a byte. This allows one piece of information to be sent instead of the usual eight.
Overall this means the WACI system not only has the speed across a network but also has the ability to minimize
the information sent. It can even schedule when the information is sent to minimize bandwidth usage during peak
hours. Best of all it is free for download with no licensing.
Expandability and Flexibility
The WACI NX has the ability to expand beyond its base unit’s capability. Features like content streaming and
additional ports make WACI truly a unit to use now and the future. As equipment may come and go the WACI
has been designed to be years ahead and adapt to the next generation of projectors, DVD players, flat panel
displays, etc. This ability to adapt also keeps a common interface even though there may be different brands of
equipment used in a system.
 Audio Streaming, recording, and playback (MP3, WAV)
 Addition Ports. As the system grows so can the control system.
 Hard Drive. Additional memory to store anything.
Size, Weight and Power Consumption Makes a Big Difference
The WACI NX series comes in a variety of sizes from larger 19” industry standard rack mount to smaller form
factors that are very compact and lightweight. Not only does it come in many sizes but it draws very little power
-4-
making it the first of its kind to have a battery add-on module making it portable. The industry has always relied
on 19” rack mount devices as the standard but in today’s world when there is less space and a smaller budget,
following the past is not always the best. Since the WACI is highly integrated this means there is less wiring and
less components needed to achieve the control of a system. No rack and less labor results in even more savings.
When a control system is used for asset management, why put the control system with the rest of the equipment.
It would be wiser to hide the monitoring device in the ceiling or somewhere well hidden. The size and mounting
allows the WACI to be mounted into podiums or under tables and even behind displays. WACI is great for military
and rental applications where size, weight, and power consumption at an unknown location makes a difference.
Sometimes it does make sense not to be like everyone else.
Invitation to Impress
Aurora would like to have an opportunity to show you what we can do for your install. Pricing, performance,
expandability, and warranty make the WACI an impressive consideration for any size install. Please give us a call
or send an e-mail to answer your questions and concerns. Thank you.

Introduction
What separates Aurora Multimedia from the rest is no matter what the configuration; the system itself is nonproprietary and license free. This allows a level of support never available before to control systems. Currently,
there are tens of thousands of web programmers and support people who can understand and work with the
WACI control system typology. We pride ourselves on the pricing and warranty for the amount of features
supplied without sacrificing expandability even on the lesser systems.
In the pages to follow are tables comparing different configurations of control systems and touch panels. We
have done our best to provide the most up to date information as well as the best matches for product
comparison. Since every manufacturer has different configurations, ultimately it will be the requirements of the
project that will determine which is best.

3 Feature Explanations
FEATURES
EXPLANATION
Speed
Main CPU speed which determines how fast things can get done overall
RAM
Determines how complex and also how fast the system can perform. SDRAM is much
slower then DDR memory because DDR can read and write at the same time. DDR
memory can get the information much faster then SDRAM which reduces wait times.
Flash
The amount of memory to hold the program or contents for the web server. The WACI
also uses this memory for NVR (Non Volatile Ram) storage. The competition has separate
memory which is limited between 256Kb and 1.5Mb. In short, WACI can hold up to 4GB of
accumulated information even when the power is off. This is useful when working with
databases or storing other information that needs to be readily available.
Maximum Flash
The largest amount of available storage with CF memory add-on.
LAN Ports
In order to communicate with the LAN, WAN, or Web a LAN port is need. The speed of
the LAN port determines how much information the port can physically handle. Not all
10/100T LAN ports are created equal. Just because it states 100Mbs does not mean the
processor can send or receive that much information due to processing speed. Some
10/100 LAN ports can only process 6Mbps. The WACI will go as fast as the network will
let you.
Auto MDX and Polarity
Auto MDX allows straight through or cross over cables to be used. Auto polarity will
reverse the + and the – of the TX and the RX if they are wired wrong. Overall this means
the WACI has the ability to correct wiring errors on its own saving time and money.
Power Over Ethernet
Power over Ethernet is a new standard that allows up to 13 watts of power to be sent over
LAN so no power cords are required. The WACI NX uses so little power it makes it
possible to use the power over Ethernet standard with the available NX-POE board.
USB on-the-go
Allows a unit to be a client or a host. This means the WACI NX can not only be the master
for other devices but the slave as well for other devices to take control of it.
Cipher Processor
It is a co-processor to off-load the security functions from the main CPU thus making the
system quicker and more efficient. This effects encryption/decryption of SSL,VPN, and
AES.
DSP Processor
It is a co-processor to specifically handle the digital I/O, A/D, and D/A functions so that the
main processor does not have to do that work. In addition, the DSP can also do advanced
functions like audio processing, frequency generation, current sensing, and more. WACI
NX is the first of its kind to have such power and flexibility.
Temp Sensor
The temperature sensor reports back the environmental condition of the WACI NX and the
surroundings. Many times control systems are put in areas that are not well ventilated.
The WACI NX will report back via e-mail or any other communication method available on
the unit to indicate if everything is ok.
IR Leaner
An IR learner is the ability to record the IR signals sent form remote controls of different
devices like a VCR, DVD, display, etc. Unlike other control systems the WACI NX has it
built in requiring no additional hardware. If equipment changes it can be learned into the
system if the IR file is not available from our web site.
CF Slot
The compact flash port is used for memory expansion. In the WACI NX it is used for
additional peripherals as well like 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, and Zigbee.
Expansion Slot
Expansion is important to any control system as it determines the ability to add addition
features in the future. The speed of the port is important because it limits what can and
cannot be done with the expansion slot. In the case of the WACI NX there is more then
enough bandwidth to not only handle additional ports but streaming audio and video as
well.
Serial Ports
Serial ports are usually RS-232/485/422 connections to allow communications with devices
that have these ports like plasmas, lighting, etc.
DSP Ports
A port tied to a Digital Signal Processor for advanced mathematical functions of the signals
coming in or going out allowing more capabilities then ever before.
Digital Input
Digital input is used for simple on/off detection like from a switch.
Digital Output
A/D
Digital output is used to trigger other devices on or off like a relay or LED.
Analog to digital converters are is way of reading voltages. This is useful when trying to
get feedback from a motor position or in the case of the WACI’s DSP it can read in and
determine the frequency of signals. For example, a DVD with IR control does not have any
feedback to tell a control system if it is on or off. With the WACI DSP capabilities, the
- 12 -
output video can be sent to the DSP A/D to see if the video signal is present. This helps
achieve 2 way feedback so now instead of a toggle power button, individual on/off buttons
can be made on the control interface.
D/A
Digital to analog converter. The WACI NX can use this to make an LED glow instead of
simple on/off like the digital output does. It can even play audio clips from the DSP
processor.
Relays
Relays are used to trigger devices like projector screens, shades, or anything that requires
a contact closure. The WACI NX not only does that but provides a C-Type relay for more
advanced functions. The C-Type relay has the normally open, normally closed, and center
pole available for connection. This allows the relay to be used as a 2 to 1 switch for audio,
video, or any of the other control ports to create more discrete ports with what is available.
IR Ports
IR ports are used to control devices with IR remotes like a VCR, TV, DVD, etc.
IR 1way RS-232
Depending on the control system and the model, IR ports can be used for 1 way transmit
only RS-232C applications.
IR Input
IR input allows the control system to match the IR signal from a remote to the program to
carry out a function based on the button pushed. The WACI NX has the ability to make
just about any IR remote control its own.
IR Emitters
In order to control the IR device IR emitters are needed.
LCD Status
A display to show information of the system. The WACI uses a pixel based backlit LCD
which not only allows a lot of information to be shown but can also do grapics if needed.
LED Status
LED status of the ports. Usually red, green, blue or yellow the LED helps quick indication
of port activity or status of the system.
Web Setup
The ability to setup the functions of the control system like IP address, DHCP, baud rates,
port settings, etc. WACI is the only control system to have this ability for every function of
the device.
Web Diagnostics
Allows the system to be diagnosed without any additional software or hardware. The
WACI can serve up what is going on in the system from just about any device with a web
browser from anywhere in the world.
Internal Event Manager
The event manager is a powerful but simple way of making the WACI do things. It is an
easy way to program the WACI when web languages are not necessary or not understood
by the individual.
Non-proprietary
The WACI NX is based on industry standards to make it operate. This not only applies to
the programming languages but the hardware as well. Just about anyone who has
knowledge with web sites can create a working WACI control environment. No special
schooling is required and there are thousand of books as well as programmers who
understand the protocol. Proprietary languages require special schooling and licensing
that sometimes is not made available to the end user.
Non-platform specific
The WACI NX not only can be used with just about any web standard but can be
developed on just about any platform like Apple, Microsoft, Sun JAVA, etc. Other control
systems need a program to be installed on a PC and the program is usually specific to that
PC.
Scripting Language
The WACI NX is scripting language based. This means code can be change while the
system is in use. Most control systems require code to be compiled, loaded, the restarted.
The WACI does not need to do this allowing a system to be updated and modified on the
fly.
Licensing Required
Believe it or not some control systems do not let you modify the code or use the program
utilities required to diagnose a system. This means even though you own the system you
can not modify it unless an authorized programmer or dealer is available.
Power
The amount of energy the control system will consume during operation.
Size
The size will determine where it will fit and how it ill mount.
Weight
The weight will determine the application it can be used for as well as the mounting
required due to the weight.
Warranty
A good system should be backed by a good warranty. That is why we give a limited
lifetime warranty.
