Course Waivers, Transfers, and Credit by Examination
2011-2012
University policy allows graduate students to waive out of no more than one-fifth of the total
number of units required for their program. There are three methods of waiving out of course
work.
Option 1: Automatic Credit for Approved Courses Taken at UCI with a Grade of B or
Better. No petition is required. Student Affairs staff will record these courses.

Option 2: Petition for Course Waiver through Transfer of Courses
Students can petition to transfer upper division undergraduate or graduate courses from another institution
if they are equivalent to credential program courses. Submit petitions as soon as possible to ensure that
you take all of the required courses in the credential program. (The course waiver form is attached.)

If the credential program course for which you are seeking a waiver requires field-based
assignments to be completed, it is not eligible for this option. A verified grade of B or better is
required for each course.

File a Course Waiver Petition for each course along with the course syllabus.
The UC Irvine Department of Education Catalogue for course descriptions is available at
http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/ed/ed.1.htm

Education 173, 330, and 350 are not eligible for a waiver unless they were taken at another
University of California campus.
Option 3: Credit by Examination. Under this option, a student who becomes eligible for
credit by examination receives credit and a grade on the UCI transcript.
EDUC 173: Cognition and Learning in Educational Settings
If a petitioner passes the exam with a grade B or better, he or she will then complete the university’s
“Credit by Examination Petition,” and pay $5.00 processing fee to the Cashier before a grade can be
officially assign. The units and grade will then be included in your credential program transcripts.
This exam can be scheduled by Sarah Singh in the Education Building.
Work with your counselor to determine whether you are eligible for waivers and/or to schedule credit by
examination.
