Nutrients Quiz
1. Our body requires nutrients for many reasons. We have discussed 5 in class. State three of
them below:
- Energy
- Repair
- Growth
- Maintenance
- Development
2. Define the word "diet".
The amount and type of food we should eat to maintain our health.
3. There are 5 different types of nutrients. Carbohydrate is one of them. State the rest of them.
(i) Proteins
(iii) Minerals
(ii) Fats
(iv) Vitamins
4. What is another name for simple carbohydrates? Sugar
5a) What is the difference between simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates?
Complex carbohydrates need to be broken down in to simple carbohydrates (glucose) before it
can be used by the body as energy whereas simple carbohydrates can be used for energy right
away.
b) Explain why it is better in the long run to eat complex carbohydrates than simple carbohydrates.
Our body breaks down simple carbohydrates very quickly; however, it takes a LONG time to
break down complex carbohydrates before it can be used as energy. So if our diet is high in
simple carbohydrates and low in complex carbohydrates, we will feel hungry very often and
will need to eat very frequently.
6. There are 2 types of fats. Give the name of the type of fats that is also known as "BAD fat".
Saturated Fats
7. State 2 functions of fats in our body.
- Used to build cell membranes
- Can be stored for future energy use
- Storing energy for later during times of desperate needs
- Can keep us warm
- Act like a cushion and protect our organs from getting damaged
8. Why is it not good to break down proteins for energy?
Because proteins are building blocks for many structures in cells.
9. Does our body require a small or large amount of minerals and vitamins? Small
10. State the names of the common mineral and common vitamins that we discussed in class.
Common mineral: calcium
Common vitamin: vitamin D
11. Is water a nutrient? No
12. State the function of water.
- Helps transport nutrients and wastes
- Helps cool the body through sweat
