Informative Speech – Cultural Interview
Important Information
Speech Dates: Tuesday, November 3 and Thursday, November 5
Length: 7-9 minutes
Topic: Choose between two topics:
Stereotypes Americans have about your culture
OR Stereotypes you have about American culture
Overview
1. Brainstorm ideas. Narrow the topic into three choices that you are interested in. Note: no
two students can do the same stereotype for their culture or for American culture – BE
ORIGINAL!
Due: Tuesday, October 20
2. Once the teacher has approved your topic, write 10 questions for interviews that you will
do with American informants. The teacher will review the questions and give feedback.
The questions and answers will give you the data that you discuss during the speech.
 Questions must be both qualitative and quantitative.
 Demographic information should be collected about the informants. This doesn’t
count towards the ten questions.
 Carefully consider what makes a good question. Ask specific, unbiased questions.
Avoid making unfair assumptions or making your informants uncomfortable.
 You will use your answers (data) to make interesting visual aids.
Due: Thursday, October 22
3. Interview informants. Collect and analyze data. Write an outline for your speech.
4. Prepare for your presentation. You may use only ONE 5X7 speaker card and a
PowerPoint presentation of NO MORE than 10 slides. Remember, for the number of
slides, less is more!
5. Deliver the speech extemporaneously (conversationally). DO NOT MEMORIZE OR
READ the speech. If you memorize or read the speech, you may fail the speech.
6. Turn in all your paperwork to the teacher on the day of your speech. This includes:
 outline
 questionnaire and answers
 notes
 speaker card
Send your PowerPoint presentation by email to Davida: djor@pdx.edu
