Textbook: Brief Calculus, 6th edition by Ron Larson and Bruce Edwards
Your Grade: Your grade will be determined by homework, quizzes, tests, and a final
exam.
Homework/Quizzes: Homework/Quizzes will be given regularly.
 If homework is collected, I expect the following or absolutely no credit may be given:
1)
2)
3)
4)
Homework that is legible and neat
Homework that is done on one side of the paper and is stapled.
Answers that are justified. Show all your work.
Homework is due at the beginning of class.
Note: I will grade about one third of the assigned homework problems. Also, late
homework may not receive any credit. However, it is still better to turn it in than not to
turn it in.
 If a quiz is given, the following will occur:
1) The quiz will be given at the beginning of class.
2) The homework will not be collected or graded, but I will be more than
happy to mock grade it for you.
3) No makeup quizzes will be given.
Note: The number of points available on Homework/Quizzes is 100. I will drop your
lowest 3 homework/quiz scores. Although your total homework/quiz scores will be more
than 100 points, I will scale your scores at the end of the semester so that there is a
maximum of 100 points.
Tests: There will be three tests given throughout the semester during the weeks noted on
the weekly schedule. I will let you know the exact dates about a week beforehand. Each
test is worth 100 points.
Note: If you do miss one of the 3 exams, a make up will be given only if the following
conditions are met:
1) The exam has been missed because of an extreme and verifiable emergency.
2) I am notified of your absence before the exam takes place. (Either email me or
leave a message with the Math Department.)
If the above conditions are not met, you will receive a zero for the exam.
Final Exam: The final exam will be on Tuesday, May 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. The
final exam is comprehensive and will be worth 200 points. Note: It is department policy
that you take the final exam at the assigned time.
Grades: The total number of points available on tests, homework, and quizzes is 600.
540-600 points = A
480-539 points = B
420-479 points = C
360-419 points = D
less than 359 points = E
The grade of I will be awarded only if all the following conditions are met:
1. The student has completed all but a small portion of the required work.
2. The student has an average of at least 50% on the work completed.
3. The student has a valid reason (in the sole opinion of the instructor) for not
completing the course on time.
4. The student agrees to make up the remaining course material in a short period
of time.
5. The student gives the instructor a written request for the grade of I before
grades are filed (not later than 48 hours after the final exam).
Withdrawing: The last day to withdraw without a W appearing on your transcript is
Tuesday, February 8. The last day to withdraw with a W is Tuesday, March 8. After
March 8, students may only withdraw with the Dean’s permission.
Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is expected in this course. Students are
responsible to inform themselves of University policies regarding the Code of Academic
Integrity. Students found to be in violation will be subject to penalties. For more
information about the code, see http://studpubs.web.arizona.edu/policies/studcofc.htm.
Students Who Require Reasonable Accommodations Based on Disability: Students
planning to use accommodations for this course should provide the instructor with a letter
of identification from the Disability Resource Center no later than January 24th.
Further Comments:
1) I will take attendance the first two days of class. After that, it is your responsibility to
attend class. Statistics have shown that regular class attendance tends to improve grades.
If you cannot attend class on a given day or days, it is your responsibility to keep informed
of any announcements, syllabus adjustments, or policy changes made during scheduled
classes. If you have more than 3 consecutive absences, I reserve the right to drop you
from the class.
2) I will inform you of tests and quizzes about one week in advance.
3) The homework list is tentative. I reserve the right to delete/add problems to the
homework list.
4) Calculators may or may not be allowed for exams and quizzes. If a calculator is
allowed for a test or quiz, I will not permit sharing of calculators. In addition, any
calculator that performs symbolic operations, such as the TI-89, TI-92, etc… will not be
permitted on tests or quizzes.
Some guidelines for success in math:
1) Do the assigned homework diligently on a regular basis.
2) Ask questions if you are stuck on a concept or a problem. This is one of the many
reasons why I’m here. Don’t feel intimidated or shy. Math is not a spectator
sport!
3) Be confident. Don’t expect to understand a concept every time the first time
around. Sometimes it takes longer that expected. Work hard and again, ask
questions.
