Open a web page and type in the Library homepage address http://library.uwb.edu/ in the address line and click ‘Go’ or press the ‘Enter’ key on your keyboard. 2. From the Campus Library homepage, look for the “Resources” category and click on Research Guides by Subject. 3. Now you should be on a page titled “Welcome to the UWB/CCC Campus Library Subject & Course Guides!” Look for the “Browse by Subject” box, the middle column of the web page and scroll down to, and click on, the word Nursing. Scroll down to, and click on, the word Nursing. 4. Now you should be at the Nursing Subject Guide page. This page contains a list of healthrelated databases, including a link for PubMed. (The web address of this page is libguides.uwb.edu/nursing ) 5. Click on either the Finding Articles tab or link shown in the Nursing Subject Guide illustration at the bottom of the previous page. This will take you to the Find Articles page. 10 6. Click on the off-campus access button located in the top right corner of the web page. After logging in with your UW NetID and Password you should be taken back to the Nursing page. 7. Look for the Nursing Databases box. Look for and click on the PubMed link. If you cannot get into PubMed or another UW Restricted database please call us at (425) 352-5340 and let us know so we can help. Searching in PubMed: PubMed automatically adds the word “and” between words (like Google does). So you don’t have to type it in this database – unless you are doing a more complex search such as the practice search on page 14, the fifth bulleted item. 1. Type search words into the empty search box such as asthma management barriers to treatment, or asthma management advocacy. 2. Click on the Search button to the right of the search box to start the search. 3. Now you should have a results list. To see which PubMed results are available ONLINE through the UW Libraries: 1. Click on the words DISPLAY SETTINGS located below PubMed.gov. (Located above the search results.) 11 2. Click on the word "Abstract" as illustrated below, then click on the APPLY button (see image below). 3. The display will change. Abstract should now be the word displayed to the right of the Display Settings link. Publication Types and Mesh Terms are usually located under the abstract or summary of the article. Recent articles may not have publication types or Mesh terms assigned yet. 4. After the screen changes, look for either a “UW Article Online” button or a “Check for Full Text - W” button to access the full text of an article. Click on one of these buttons. a. If you have a choice, use the “UW Article Online” button, as that should be a full text article link. b. The “Check for Full Text - W” button searches the UW Libraries Catalog for the full text, and may take you to an information page about the holdings of the journal title by the libraries Another view: 1. Click on the on an article title link. Notice that the full text buttons are to the right, rather than below the abstract. 2. Related Articles: Related articles, or citations closely related to the original citation, are available when you click on the title of a citation. These citations are displayed by relevancy and may be reviewed and added to the clipboard, saved or printed. To Refine Your Search in PubMed – MeSH Terms and Publication Types: 1. Look for, and click on the link below an abstract. MeSH Terms are the formal language that PubMed speaks. MeSH stands for medical subject headings and they are generated by the National Library of Medicine. You can select a new search strategy from this list of MeSH terms to do a more focused search. o (Optional) The MeSH Database link is located on the advanced search page, and, on the PubMed home page. Use this to search for MeSH terms. o Try typing in your topic keywords (one word or phrase per search) into the Mesh Database. 12 If the fulltext of the article is not available in Pubmed, the next step is to see if the journal title is available in the UW Libraries System by checking in the UW Libraries Catalog Search in the catalog for the title of the journal, not the article title. The journal titles are abbreviated in PubMed. Hover the mouse over the abbreviated journal title in a PubMed citation to see a pop-up box of the entire journal title. Enter in the full journal title into the UW Libraries Catalog. Steps in tracking down full text in the UW Libraries Catalog: 1. Open a new web page. Go to the UW Libraries Catalog online at http://catalog.lib.washington.edu/ 2. If not on the Bothell campus, click on the Off-Campus Access link located in the top right-hand corner of the web page. After logging in with your UW NetID and Password you should be taken back to the UW Libraries Catalog page. 3. In the UW Libraries Catalog, to search by the title of a journal, click on the left box and change from “Keyword” to “Title”. (Search by Title instead of Keyword.) 4. In the middle box and type in the journal title (example of a journal title: Journal of Neonatal Nursing, as seen below) Click on the right box and change from “Entire Collection” to “Journals.” 5. Click on the Submit button. Online full text, print, and microfilm holdings will be displayed. There may be more than one link for the journal title in the catalog. Click on through them to see if any online or print full text is available. If the item is not available online or through the Bothell Campus Library you can request it through the Interlibrary Loan service located online at http://duwamish.lib.washington.edu/ Contact the library with your questions or for more information at (425) 352-5340. 13 Practice searches for PubMed (Optional) How many results do you get? Type in: "asthma management"[TI] self care (Note: The [TI] forces caring to be found in the article title) asthma (management OR treatment) AND nurs* theor* (make sure the AND and OR are capitalized) o The search strategy above includes multiple concepts connected with Boolean search operators [AND, OR]. Nesting (parentheses) and truncation [*asterisks*] are also used. This is an example of an intermediate level search strategy.
