Blood (Shrink 225 words to no more than 150 words.)
The Red Cross will hold an emergency blood drive at it’s Southern Arizona chapter
headquarters Friday from 9-5 to restock dangerously low supplies.
Recent disasters and dips in donations have resulted in dangerously low supplies in
Southern Arizona, according to Adelle Brown, a spokeswoman for the local chapter. Incliment
weather is blamed primarily for the drop in donations, she adds.
Blood supplies around the nation have been strained recently by natural disasters,
including tornados and flooding, Brown noted.
“When one of these natural disasters strikes we’re called on to pull together and meat that
urgent need but the normal demands for blood continue and it takes a toll on our supplies,” she
says. “Now we need to restock because we would really be in dire straights if another disaster
shuld hit anytime soon.”
Brown said that Red Cross volunteers would be standing by Friday to provide
transportation for those who need it. Those who wish to make an appointment can call (520)
885-8246 or you can just walk-in, Brown says.
Also, the Cold Stone Creamery is donating coupons for free ice-cream to all of those
donating blood for the first time.
The Friday blood drive is in addition to the weekly regular collection which takes place at
the chapter headquarters, Brown said. “We’re hoping for a really big turnout to boost our
supplies,” she added.

Border Patrol (Shrink 295 words to no more than 175 words.)
U.S. Border Patrol agents seized over a ton of marijuana in two incidents southwest of
Tucson.
At 5 AM Friday, an agent using night-vision googgles spotted a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup
truck driving across the border illegally near the village of San Miguel on the Tohono O’odham
Nation, said Mario Escalante a Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman.
San Miguel is about 90 miles southwest of Tucson.
After a helicopter began tracking the truck, the driver turned off the lights and continued
north at high speed on a dirt road. The truck rammed into a parked Border Patrol Ford pickup
that was facing to the south, Escalante says. The smuggler left the truck and ran into the dessert,
Escalante said.
An agent inside the pickup was momentarily dazed but not hurt, Escalante said.
The agent found 1,061 pounds of marijuana, a two way radio, and a bulletproof vest
inside the vehicle. Agents said they believe the driver escaped back to Mexico. The truck was
reported stolen out of Tucson, he said.
On Thursday night at 9 p.m. near Three Points, agents found over 1,000 pounds of pot
and eight weapons inside a house that they believe was being used as a stash house and
distribution center, Escalante said.
They found 49 bundles of marijuana and 22 smaller bags for a total of 1,039 pounds
inside the empty house. They also discovered 5 rifles, a shotgun, a .45 caliber pistol, and a 9 mm
pistol. There were no arrests, he said.
A concerned citizen alerted the Border Patrol to the house, and after conducting
surveilance the agency obtained a search warrant and searched the home on Thursday night.
Officials from the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement
will be looking into the case, Escalante said.
